Strange signal. Sounds like a siren, with morse code over top of it. LOUD S-7 signal in northern Canada. I'll update as I can.
***UPDATE!!!*** There's a weaker station UNDER it! Use SSB and tune up or down slowly but listen carefully, it's there. Could this be a jammer?
***UPDATE #2*** The jammer is right on 6.940, if you tune AM 6.942 or 6.938 you can hear the slightly wider signal being jammed. Occasional music and male announcer. Of course as soon as one hears the word jammer one could suspect the Bunneh bunch, but it can't possible be them, you can actually hear THIS transmitter.
-
Yeah, I heard & recorded this, too. The jammer sounded like 6 or 7 electronic tones, ascending up in pitch like a staircase. I've never heard SWBC on 6940 kHz & wouldn't've guessed that a jammer would so quickly find & jam a station in the middle of nowhere frequency-wise. Anyone else know what this might've been? ???
Thanks!
-
Andrew, can you post a recording of it - it sounds like it could of been an X06 transmission possibly.
-
Hey Sealord,
Thanks for the tip. I searched YouTube & it sounds just like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYJ6PylrgL8&feature=related
I just assumed it was a jammer. :P
Funny thing is that I'm listening to the recording now & some pirate was goofing around over top of it, vocally doing the Close Encounters theme, singing song bits, etc. It was in SSB and I was recording in AM, so I haven't been able to/decode ID any announcements from the pirate.
I'll e-mail a recording of it to you if you'd like.
Thanks & have a great day!
Andrew

Very interesting catch, Andrew.
Several folks on IRC (#wunclub and #pirateradio) were also hearing it.
-
Ya, if you don't mind Andrew, shoot me a copy of your recording - I have not heard this sequence before with X06, but the style & count are very similar.
There is a 'test' sequence (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) for X06 the tones are as follows:
1 - 840hz
2 - 870hz
3 - 900hz
4 - 930hz
5 - 970hz
6 - 1015hz

I heard this too late last night thanks to a tip in #pirateradio. I was curious so I went flying around the world via the remote Perseus SDR network. The signal was non-present on any West coast receivers and was simply overpowering on the European receivers. Here's a video I uploaded comparing my reception to that of a receiver located in Austria. You can hear and see the tones on the waterfall display:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJEQJbiPbEM
So it seems what I caught was just the opening test sequence? This was repeated for several minutes until I gave up and went to bed.
-
Well, the youtube example Andrew posted had the test sequence; I haven't heard the actual one from last night - the few times I've been lucky enough to catch X06 has been different sequences with the tones.
X06 is one of the hardest spy stations to catch since it doesn't really have an established schedule.
Here's two that I happened upon looking for pirates:

But did anyone else hear the station under it? If the "siren" was weak or not heard at all in parts of the US then the SW station under it should have been heard somewhere other then here. Also, there was CW with the "siren" at the beginning. Not sure what transmission it was part of. It was well sent, probably 15 or 20 seconds, at least 10wpm.

From listening to Andrew's audio file (thnx man :) ), the station under X06 is PeePee Vagina Radio!
Here's a short excerpt from Andrew's recording that he sent me:
https://www.yousendit.com/download/T2djN3RlYSs1UjdtcXRVag
You can hear the PVR Op singing his ID to the tune of 'Close Encounters' under X06 (it is the 'test' sequence like the example you posted Andy).
Here's a copy of the audio I caught on my recorder from last night (see my latest PVR log):
http://www.archive.org/download/ShortwavePirateRadioCont/PeepeeVaginaRadio6925Usb0531z-0532z12-30-11.mp3
You can also hear the Op giving the spoken ID in both examples aside from the song version.
I haven't had a chance to listen all the way through Andrew's mp3 yet - that siren & CW may be somewhere else in the recording that you heard Jolly Roger.
-
Hey Sealord, Thanks for checking this out! Now I know everything rather than leaving it as "some unid pirate and a jammer of some sort." This is the only time I've heard PPV Radio, so I didn't have other transmissions to compare it to.
-
I don't know if the recording is indexed to the time or not but the CW occurred at about 10 minutes after the hour, according to my notes. Perhaps a minute or two sooner.
-
I know this thread has been out of the loop for a bit, but wanted to post an audio file I received from WEAK Radio the other day (thnx man! :) ). WEAK was able to catch the CW portion under the X06 tx that Jolly Roger heard. I don't know code, but for those that do maybe this will help ID whoever was sending.
