Title: Comet NEOWISE
Post by: ChrisSmolinski on June 16, 2020, 1743 UTC
Yes, I know... forecasts of visible eye comets are sort of like Lucy and the football... but we can hope!

Forecasters say Comet NEOWISE might become as bright as a 2nd or 3rd magnitude star. Northern hemisphere observers would be able to easily see it in the evening sky in mid-July.

Chris,
Gotta to apologize - I got up at 0300 today (Saturday), made a short drive over to the
Corps of Engineers Boat Launch area at Old Hickory Lake
and got some great views of Neowise. It was a very easy binocular object and
barely, to these old eyes, "nekked" eye object.

We had a weak cold front come through yesterday and the temp and dewpoint
dropped. The temp was 68 and dewpoint was 62 with a light breeze from the
lake - very comfortable for here in mid-July.

Tried for some photos but discovered a little shake in the tripod with the 300 mm
lens hanging on it so all the pics were no good.

Starting Monday, 13jul20, Neowise will become an early evening object.
spaceweather.com has some "how to find" sky maps.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm??? I wonder if RF can be bounced off the comet's tail, besides light? Has anyone ever tried?

'I managed to see it a few times. The recent bright moon has made it not worth trying for about a week, but it's starting to rise later so I might get to check it out again before it fades too much. I haven't had to leave the city but I have needed binoculars.

My dad has good telescopes and a tracker for using a camera. He got some great shots of Hale Bopp back in '97. He's too old for those kinds of trips now, unfortunately.
