what's a good program to record a show and put in mp3s to play etc.. i think i might just got live and wing it but want to try to record something then broadcast it.

Audacity is a good FREE program. Lots of tools and features. There is better software to buy but expensive, Audacity should be good enough. Plenty of YouTube tutorial videos.

+1 It can do just about anything Audition can, and is fine for my needs. Several commercial stations I know of use it as well, as they just could not justify the ongoing costs of Adobe.

For trying out a few different software programs first :
You can use (old-) version of "Cool Edit Pro"
(old name for what's now named "Adobe Audition")
http://www.oldversion.com/windows/cool-edit-pro/ (http://www.oldversion.com/windows/cool-edit-pro/)
Or, try the (old-) version of NCH WavePad !

For "Mixing" software check https://mixxx.org/ (https://mixxx.org/)
Enjoy!

I would say Audacity also, though it had a learning curve for me, there's "too much" in it when I just use basic editing.
I'll second the suggestion of the Oldversion of Cool Edit, if you just need to record, edit and save into MP3. Some old versions will use a separate codec pack to add MP3, and I think you can add LAME's MP3 filter, .FLT file to it, and once done you can record a waveform, then save to MP3 easily.
CoolEdit was the best and worked on low end laptops, like a P1, we could record and edit a piece, convert to mp3 at 128k and FTP it to the station over the phone, all while at a location, and get broadcast quality, well as good as MP3 was at the time anyway.
At home I really liked Sound Forge as an easy editor, real simple to record and save. I don't have a clue if the Sound Forge has an Old Version you can freely get, or what the status of it is today. Sound Forge was the boss editor if you want simple.

We have been using Cool Edit for ever here and it works on windows 7 not to mention you can do quite a bit with it.

I use Snooper Pro https://www.snooper.se/ (https://www.snooper.se/) for some of my recordings. There is a small price attached to it but I do like the sound activated feature, good for VHF / UHF.
You might want to look at Voice Activated Recorder from WD6CNF http://www.hotamateurprograms.com/ (http://www.hotamateurprograms.com/) and Voice Recorder from IZ8BLY http://antoninoporcino.xoom.it/ (http://antoninoporcino.xoom.it/). I believe they are both free. I was using the IZ8BLY software before switching to Snooper and if I recall correctly, I switched because of the new Windows audio mixer compatibility issue. I am using VB-Audio virtual cables and as such the "default audio" setting in the legacy software does not work for me.
I had been 20+ year user of Cool Edit Pro until Windows 7. I have not been able to make it work properly. It does not recognize the modern Windows audio in/out mechanism and as such I had to revert to Audacity --- it's ok but not my Cool Edit. I have been slowly trying to work my way through Reaper https://www.reaper.fm/ (https://www.reaper.fm/) but it is a steep learning curve. Reaper used to be free for individuals but there is now also a small price attached to it. For $60.00 you get your money's worth. We use to pay thousands of dollars for ProTools and Sequoia at a previous company where I was the senior broadcast engineer and Reaper is a pretty good alternative.

there was only one studio copy of Outhouse Radio ever made because i prefer live and on the fly.
closest thing you'll find is some of the of air recordings posted on the net by various dxers .
to me sitting back and broadcasting a prerecorded show was a bit on the boring side(relays are a different animal) . but that's me not you , so have fun no matter how you do it ...

It does turn into a one person drinking game pretty quickly. Not much to do but listen to the generator hum and watch meters move and lights flash.
