I copy this station every night here in North Carolina. Covid 19 info broadcasts. I just found this news bit...

"WQFG689, the Hudson County, NJ Travelers' Information Service station on 1710 kHz AM has been granted Special Temporary Authority to increase power from 10 to 100 watts for 90 days"

This TIS station is now playing the following announcement by an OM on a continuous loop:

"This is radio station WQFG689, owned and operated by Hudson County, NJ. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties, and continue to work on correcting the issue. Please check back on 1710 AM soon. Thank you for your patience."

A pretty clear, strong signal as usual, even at this distance.

Have it loud and clear here in MD as well.  Looking back at the various logs this thing has been chugging along for awhile....

Hey All,

While certainly not a NIGHTLY occurrence, '689 became almost "ho hum" here as well.

I have heard rumors of other  TIS/Info stations (lower down in the band) that were supposed to be "temporary", yet are left to drone on and QRM a frequency LONG after they were supposed to QRT. As Pinto said,  it's  been a loooooong 90 days.

It's kind of like the WWW, folks are quick to put stuff up , but almost never bother to pull it down after it expires.

Perhaps we should send a petition to the FCC stating that '689 has "run  WAAAY long  past it's supposed 90 day permit" and that it is interfering with other "services" ("legitimate" pirates like CHIM , etc :P).

I've wondered whether sending the FCC lots of recordings of  WQFG689 playing their "we're broken" test tape would persuade them to cancel the license. Sadly, I doubt it.

Hey Chris.

I tend to agree.

The FCC is now essentially “ broken “.

I doubt they’d care about a licensed jammer.

The audio has been very good here over the last few weeks on the car radio.  There was some traffic info from what little I heard however it seems to have become riddled with agency messages.

Its coming in here tonight and I noticed it starting a few nights ago (no idea how long its been making the trip). Its not overly strong, but strong enough and there is some QRM from the USB from 1700 (KBGG). Can clearly hear "Hudson County" and talk about COVID.

0410Z ID WQFG689

Pretty decent signal for a TIS station in NJ making it all the way to MN...  Not sure why NJ cares about travelers out here in the midwest.

Hey Skeezix,

Nice catch.

'389 is not common here , even at night.

To hear them them  VERY loud during the DAY   (7/21/24, along with other NJ stations )  was astounding.

But as has been stated  by others before, we have now "all" heard it,  so enough already. It's just another unattended Info station sending out old info to  essentially nobody. I'd love to see 1710 open up to "other" activities . But probably not likely anytime  soon .

Fast forward to the year 2525...   the expedition from Alpha Centauri arrives to find no human life here.  However, they are able to home in on a continuously repeating transmission known as amplitude modulation that translates into something about obtaining an 18th booster.

NQC, I agree. What's odd about this one is it actually gets here. For many years, I've been trying to get these TIS stations and it has been exceedingly rare, except for a local MnDOT station on 530 kHz (WPAL378).

A number of years ago Undercover Radio showed up on 1710 and was much better programming than the TIS stations.

Hey Skeezix,

TIS stations are pretty rare at the apt, but on the car radio when cruising around Eastern MA ( near or "far"), I get a few- "at times".

I think 389 may be the only active 1710  station in the US. It is not enough of an issue here, so I can use 1710 (preferred) or other holes in the X band for my transmitter (which is off air for now). I can cover the entire band but obviously folks like to run as high as possible re antenna length. I have to run with with a less than 1/8 wave / loaded :-[( for now anyways ). So although I can use the transmitter in the "test"mode across the band,  getting any type of range  really has to be done in the X band.

Again , I'd like to see them go bye bye so that "others"   around the country could use 1710 , but I am not counting on it.

The armory in Springfield, MA is also on 1710. Less power, slightly distorted audio, but never in a techinal difficulites loop.  :D :D :D

Hey Rob.

Interesting to learn about armory on 1710.1710 info stations are exceedingly rare compared to the other frequencies.

The Springfield Armory on 1710 is a federal allocation as it is a national historic site. You can see signs telling you to tune in when you are on the MA Pike.

There are several TIS stations on 1710 kHz. I filed a FOIA request to get all the TIS station info, including the federal TIS stations which are *not* in the FCC database.

They're all in my DX ToolBox program for Windows and macOS, 1658 TIS stations at latest count: https://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/ham-shortwave-radio-propagation-software.html

Huh... This site use to work in TIS Searches,   https://www.fcc.gov/media/radio/travelers-information-stations-search
It no longer does, apparently.

Hey All,

I also vaguely recall another 1710 allocation for a casino in AL or MS. Don't recall from where but I believe  I saw one listed for such use.

It would be interesting to find out which ones are active and which are silent.

Again , compared to the numerous  Info stations on other frequencies, 1710 seems quite rare. Not sure why.

I suppose 1710 doesn't HAVE to be clear so that "others" could use it.It would be "nice " though. Maybe there are enough holes in the X band for most folks to use in most areas.
