The old HQ 180 is hearing SD at s6-s7 at 1352Utc...
Location Colorado
-
I've tried many times for SD, but never been able to hear it.
Hearing the usual suspects now in the 4096 range, conditions don't seem as good as yesterday morning.
Looks like the 6 dots and a dash beacon on 4096.0 might be coming in here, very faint on the waterfall.
-
Most signals were very weak this morning, probably due to the higher K index (3):
2097.31 A
3449.83 OK
4079.62 TMP
4096.26 dasher
4096.6 dasher
4097.43 KX
4102.34 W typically with around 3 wind dits
-
Nice haul given conditions :)
(bands were a total write-off tonight here)
Peace!

4096.27 dasher - weak, barely there
4096.63 dasher - very good signal this morning

-
30 Jan 2017:

4070 GT at 1228 UTC.
-
You have to love that GT beacon...makes it nicely into the Rockies also.
-
Update, now hearing the new dasher on 4111 as well at 1325z. So far no one else has reported this?
-
31 Jan 2017:

Dasher? 4110 1121z - Haven't noticed this one in a while, very weak, but there's something there.
Dasher? 4087 1123z - Might be closer to 4086.9, very weak, I think this has been logged by others once or twice?
-
I see ZN was heard...I got an e mail the other day saying there was a cluster of three beacons on 4070.3...this is possible and each is located in different places.
ZN is the lowest power one around 500 Mw but, ZT about 700Mw and GT 1.0 watts...
I can't confirm the accuracy of this e mail...but was told I could pass it on.
-
March 29:
A 2097 1125z
Thanks for the info about the three beacons on 4070.3, I will keep an ear out for ZT, which is the one I have not yet heard. Different locations would explain why I often only hear one at a time.

Chris good work...I heard ZT this morning early at 1000 utc...I was up so gave a listen..
-
April 3:
A 2097 1015z weak
I heard one of the 4070.3 beacons, but it was too weak and there was too much static to ID it.
-
April 10:
A 2097 1015z
Nothing heard on 4070 this morning.
-
April 11:
A 2097 1010z

-
April 25:
GT 4070.3 1121z
-
I got up early this morning and had very nice copy on GT as well.
A was S 8 on my old Hammerlund Hq180 and that was with the inverted L tuned to 4 Mc not 2 mc so A was going very well.
-

A 2097 1025z Good signal this morning
ZN 4070.3 1114z Fading in and out of the noise. By 1120z it was actually quite strong at times. Faded out around 1128z.
I have not heard any of the Z beacons in a while, I was hoping I would eventually catch one so I knew what the time of the current window of reception was - and now I do! ;D So I will check 4070 around this time each morning.
-
September 19:
A 2097 0955z Fair signal this morning, lots of static. Looks like some storms in Indiana.
ZN 4070.3 1040z Fading in and out of the noise.

Static levels have been pretty high here...that said I had some good fade ups on ZN around 1200 utc...
-

A 2097 1034z Good signal this morning.
ZN 4070.3 1040z I was parked here, and it just started to fade in. Stronger by around 1050z.

-
W was Q5 with big signal...ZN is now being heard on 4101 khz
NZ on 4070.4 KHz has moved up to 4101 KHz? Or NZ is new?
-
Jim...ZN it seems to be back at its hunting ground 4070khz...as of last night and this morning
-
4103 1102z Windy, lots of QRM from a nearby CW station
2097 1103 z A
4070.3 1104z ZN, quite weak.
-
There must not be many beacon listeners...only a hand full have heard ZN on the 4070.3 freq.
Do you think this beacon might be on the east coast?
-
There must not be many beacon listeners...only a hand full have heard ZN on the 4070.3 freq.
Do you think this beacon might be on the east coast?
I don't think so, not based on propagation. I only have a window in the morning when I can hear it. There may be an evening window as well, but I don't tend to hunt for beacons then. My guess is it is from somewhere between the coasts?
-
Nice signal from Windy on 4102.whatever at 1040z. Sounds like there is some wind :)
A is very weak on 2097 at 1041z.
-
November 6:
2097 1055z A

December 4, 2017:
ZN is on 4101 this morning, 1255z. Weak, but it's there.
Windy is a bit stronger at the same time.
I was hearing A on 4097 earlier, around 1100z, not very strong this morning.

-
January 11 2018:
2097.33 1227z A, Weaker than usual.
4102.79 1238z Windy ... is this Windy? All I am hearing are three dots/dashes every minute or so. Not a W.

-
Feb 6:
A weak on 2097.3 at 1225z, a bit late to try for A.
Windy a little stronger on 4102.81 at the same time, but also starting to fade out. And now at 1228z Windy's signal just came up, quite strong (relative for beacons).
A saw a few traces around 4069.7 or so that might have been one of the Zebra beacons, but not enough to ID.
I have a carrier almost exactly on 4096 kHz as well.
-
Feb 8:
Same as always... A on 2097.3 and Windy on 4102.3, both around 1145z. Not hearing anything else.

-
18 Sep 2018:
Nothing! I tried for Windy, but nothing heard. This may be the first time Windy has not been received, when I have looked for it. We're in a coronal stream again. Not only is propagation on 4 MHz poor, but my DGPS decoding from last night is looking sad as well.

-
April 29, 2019:
The usual suspects, A and Windy, around 1015 UTC.
-
Almost the end of May and I haven't posted a single log here all month. Poor conditions.
30 May 2019
Windy on the usual 4102.8 or so with a fair signal around 1000 UTC.
-
Same on the east coast of Australia Chris, very little to report, even on lower end of HF, NDB band has suffered a hit this week as too DNB, haven't heard a fish net beacon for four nights/mornings now. Usually 8MHz is lively with some beacons but very little, Russian MX beacons few and far between. 12MHz beacons even worse.
Actually done a big check on the antenna today to see if there was a break, not the antenna, just conditions... :(
-
4 June 2019:
0933 UTC: Both A on 2097.3 and Windy on 4102.8 with very weak signals and lots of static. Summertime beacon DXing, yay. Or not.

-
11 June 2019:

I've been watching 4100 +/- for a while looking for any other beacons, but nothing observed.
-
September 23 2019:
Good reception from the usual suspects of A and Windy around dawn. Sounds like lots of wind wherever Windy is located, lots of dits.
-
Rather than scatter my loggings in various threads I decided I'll consolidate them into one. Here is the inaugural post.
26 March 2021:
Both 4095.6 Whooper and Windy coming in this morning circa 1000-1030 UTC with weak signals. Normal telemetry from Windy.

29 Mar 2021: Good reception from both the 4095.6 Whooper and Windy circa 1030 UTC.
Chris,
Which of your antennas gives you the best signal?
Jim
Generally the sky loop. Although the 58 ft T2FD does surprisingly well also (better than the 120 ft T2FD for these beacons) I think because it is mounted nearly vertically.
-
1 Apr 2021:
Good signals this morning from both the Whooper and Windy circa 1015 UTC.
-
6 April 2021:
1024 UTC: Weak signals from the Whooper and Windy.
1342: Finally, I am hearing the new Hiker beacon! I parked the netSDR & 900 ft horizontal sky loop on 8005 all morning, hoping to find the time slot when there is propagation between there and here.

Yes, the 900 ft sky loop. It seems to work best for these beacons.

-
14 May 2021:
1013 UTC: Good signals from both Windy and the DW. This was using my newly built (but not yet finished) 10 ft diameter resonant loop antenna. Better reception than the sky loop. So we're moving in the right direction.

Is the loop outdoors or indoors? Polarized vertically or horizontally? In the future, attached to a public SDR? Are you able to copy beacon Morse code telemetry or just the main carrier?

Outdoors, the ceilings in my house aren't that tall, and indoor antennas are a bad idea anyway :)
It's oriented in the vertical plane, probably somewhat directional, I have it aimed east/west as west is the great circle path to the SW USA.
The antenna is resonant over a small portion of the spectrum (about 20 kHz now, working on raising the Q and reducing the bandwidth further) so it would not be a good choice for a public SDR.
Yes, I was getting a pretty good signal from the CW telemetry.
-
17 May 2021:
1008 UTC: The DW and Windy, both with signals on the weak side, lots of static. Welcome to summer on the 4 MHz band.

I am hearing faint whoops on the 900 foot Horizontal Sky Loop antenna
I noticed across the SDR's GUIs that the little "flag" markers denoting beacon frequencies are not up to date.
-
8 September 2021:
0937 UTC: Both the Desert Whooper and Windy coming in.

23 September 2021:
0930: Good signals from the Desert Whooper and Windy. At the radio a bit earlier this morning, let's see if anyone else turns up.
-
What antennas are you using Chris? Did you make up a special rig like you were considering earlier this year?
About time to hook up my loop again, now that most of the lightning is gonzo.
-
23 September 2021:
1030: Good signals as usual from the Desert Whooper and Windy.
-

Usually I am listening with the 900 ft sky loop antenna. I did make a large (7 ft x 7 ft) loop from 1 ft wide screening, an attempt at a very low inductance large loop, but was not really happy with the performance. I think a long beverage aimed to the desert southwest might be useful, it's been on my to-do list for a while.
-
27 September 2021:
1055: Good signals as usual from the Desert Whooper and Windy.
-
29 September 2021:

-
30 September 2021:
SFI appeared here suddenly at 1101 UTC, I was already receiving the Desert Whooper for some time.
----
I also had a very weak signal just around 4094.1 kHz around 1100 UTC.
Now (1215 UTC) checking the WO7I KiwiSDR in NV, I noticed it is present there, though weak (I could not find it on a bunch of other SW USA KiwiSDRs I tried). This KiwiSDR also has a good signal from SFI.
It's sending a series of dots. Now some sort of ID at 1220 UTC.
-
1 October 2021:
1030 UTC:
Good signals from Windy and the Desert Whooper this morning.
No sign of SFI yet.
I do have weak intermittent dits circa 4094.1 kHz
1055 UTC Update: 4094.1 is much stronger on the WO7I KiwiSDR in NV vs here (big surprise!) and it is clearly sending Q.
1152 UTC Update: 4094.1 now sending a series of dots / short dashes... and now back to Q.
