Title: FM Pirate Stations in Chicago?
Post by: RCCI on December 14, 2012, 2351 UTC
Living faily close to the Windy City, I have tried, without success, to capture an FM pirate. Chicago has so many licensed broadcasters, and student stations, (college & high school) it's pretty tangled up. As I recall there was one FM pirate on the city's south side that was busted years ago, but for the life of me, can't find on in the here and now.

Has anyone else in the Chicagoland area caught a broadcast, recently? You'd think there might be 1 or 2 floating around.

BTW, just got through reading Sue Carpenter's book "40 Watts From Nowhere" about her Pirate FM stations in California. It was a fast read, and thought it was pretty interesting. She received "The Knock" after boosting the watts. Any feedback on this book?

Steve;

I drive through from the far southwest suburbs through the loop to the near north side fairly regularly, and make a point to check.  Nothing heard on FM in that corridor.

There are pirates in Chicago. But to get more specific than that in a public forum like this? That would certainly lead to a "capture" that none of us want.

Wasn't looking for a QTH or frequency. Your first sentence would have sufficed. To tune with hope... or to tune with no hope... Thanks for answering.

Where I live (near the center of Mt. Prospect, IL) the FCC office is located 8 mile southeast of me at 1550 north Northwest Highway in Park Ridge, IL (Hillary's home town). I had occasion to drive past there after going to an estate sale. They rent space in a 3 story office building on the 3rd floor. There is a bunch of antennas on the roof. It's a block east of interstate 294/94 Illinois tollway. Being this close, I wouldn't dare do any FM pirating.

Just found this pirate radio station in the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. They broadcast from somewhere near the Loyola campus, at least that's where I pick it up. Probably a college kid. He's on 93.3 FM and does surf, garage, punk, hardcore, etc.

Let us know when their trucks aren't in the parking lot though, OK?  :D
