This is one with such an odd/unique origin I should really try and get a QSL card from them.

Spy Numbers / HM01 on 11462

The usual of course, but coming in fine here in Minnesota. Some fading but easily copied at 0505 UTC.

A little curious if there will be a spike in these with a Cuban Spy being released from prison recently.

Just waiting for this to pop up on an official RHC frequency again ;)

Thanks for the response.

I'm attenuating as needed -- I can drop it to "local" when it gets to be too much or stations bleed in. For whatever reason Radio Marti likes to go all over the place if I don't.

I've had to keep the loop inside for the most part, but I had it out on the porch tonight. It's mildly better there, some of the weaker signals are fighting through the noise floor. It may take a bit to find a place outside for now consistently. I can't go too high outside right now, but I may try and hoist it up on a PVC pipe I have laying around.

I cannot find any info about a switch to get the antenna to MW, which is a bit disappointing. I'm scouring sites for any hints of hidden features online, but I'm not seeing many.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Radio Havana Cuba

Yes, Radio Progreso has been back -- I logged it on here a few weeks ago. Heard it last Sunday night, albeit not terribly strong.

I've heard 5040kHz off and on with what I assume is RHC. Not as strong as it was pre-hurricane unfortunately.

The Cuban music is always fun at night, so I really miss Radio Rebelde. RHC has some music too, but they certainly like to ramble on and on before they get to it.

At least Cuba's got good music for an oppressive communist regime -- all of the fun of listening to North Korea is purely unintentional.

I am trying out the MLA 30+ and am having mixed results.

On one hand, some of the stronger stations sound like they're next door! 11780 kHz Brazil is perfect in the late afternoon, as are most of the VOA relays from Africa.

On the other, the noise floor is so high it obliterates anything else. CFRX, Turkey, Radio Educacion? All too much noise now.

Also, if this is supposed to work on MW I'm not seeing any improvement over the internal antenna on my radio.

Any suggestions? Anything I'm missing?

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: WTWW the truth
« on: November 14, 2022, 2012 UTC »
I only came back recently and dug the oldies at night, fun stuff. I knew almost nothing else about the station, but I assumed they did the "Holler for a Dollar" thing that WRMI/WWCR have done for years.

I'm upset to hear one of the worst crazies on shortwave funding it -- even if just for a bit. At least someone's principles won out in the end -- allegedly of course.

That said, selling ads on shortwave has to be nuts. I imagine you can in very, very specific situations.

Also I noticed RHC is not on 5040 AM and 6060 and other frequencies, wonder why?

Theory for awhile is that there been considerable power outages on the island since the hurricane. It sounds like they got their RHC stuff up first, but they sacked their Energy Minister after unrest in October and what little news comes out suggests it's still a mess.

I thought I could hear some VERY faint US/70s music on 9940 last night around 0500 on 9400. It wasn't the same as what was playing on 5085 at the time.

Music and talk, confirmed with a livestream. Beatles Stars on 45 Medley by 0055UTC. Coming in just fine with very mild fading, but a little local noise involved I have to locate.

In other news -- Good grief, someone is playing Stars on 45. They, um, don't make them like this anymore.

Nothing earth-shattering here, but a little surprised that they made it though the power-outages and hurricane back on the air while the other Cubans in on 60 Meters are MIA.

I heard something in its place the night before that sounded like a ton of VOA incidental music. Wonder if it was just gearing up for the new schedules.

English. 0430, a bit of fading. Usual VOA Africa fare, still nice to hear after all these years.

This is fun! I know KVOH cut back hours due to electric costs, but it's still good to have this show on Saturday nights.

Mild fading but otherwise solid on 9975.

Very weak, but some Japanese phrases and a passing ID seem to confirm it. Mostly talk, but with a few breaks that sound like promotions or advertisements.

This is a first for me! Not bad with a humble setup. I've listened a few times on KiwiSDR, wish something like this could survive in the Americas.

One of my favorite pleasant surprises on Shortwave. It comes and goes here in Minnesota at night, but there's usually good and diverse music. I remember recording hours of it in the middle of the night in the early 90s when I got a good cassette deck with an input.

I've heard this station at least twice.

How and/or why were the Japanese citizens abducted? That is not clear to me.

And if there are no actual radios in North Korea, except a few smuggled in, or the standard North Korean single-frequency ones, how does the Japanese government know if any of the abductees are hearing the broadcasts?

North Korean abductions were notorious from Japan and the south -- they even made a ripoff of Godzilla with abducted South Koreans. Wiki is actually helpful on this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korean_abductions_of_Japanese_citizens

Also, for fun watch the first episodes of "Crash Landing on You" on Netflix. It's obviously fiction and is a light/silly drama, but some of the actors said the depiction of North Korean villages was very accurate: Many people had TVs to receive South Korean shows and had at least one radio hidden.
