Checking this morning, the beacon I heard the other morning is back, IC1 on 2115, continuously transmitting the ID and a dash. A very good signal at 0956 UTC.

And of course reliable A on 2097.3, the pirate beacon.

And now JC3 on 2075 at 1005 UTC.

An HFU Wiki page on these beacons was created some time ago, it could be updated and used to keep track of which beacons folks are hearing: https://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/index.php/Fishnet_beacon

Software / Sonde Radiosonde decoder for Windows and macOS
« on: March 18, 2019, 1723 UTC »
Sonde 0.2.0 is out for Windows and macOS. Sonde decodes LMS6 and Mark IIa radiosondes (weather balloons), so you can track them from launch to landing. Recover and return them to the NWS, or hang them on your wall as a trophy!

This is a major re-write of Sonde, and adds support for LMS6 radiosondes (weather balloons): https://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/radiosonde-decoder.html

I ran across two this morning around 2110 kHz while checking for the A beacon on 2097 kHz. One was continuously transmitting, rather than the usual pattern of a few IDs and then silent for several minutes.

Shortwave Pirate / To those submitting loggings...
« on: March 18, 2019, 1023 UTC »
For starters, thank you! Loggings are how we all learn what stations are on the air, and what to look for in the future. There's a few things that everyone can do to help out.

First, please take a look at the post/thread about the logging subject format: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,8448.0.html

It's straightforward, but if everyone follows the format, it makes it much easier (and quicker) to figure out the important details of a logging, as well as search for previous logs.

Second, if you haven't already, go to your profile settings, and add your location to your signature. We understand not everyone wants to give their exact location, and you don't need it down to your street address. City and State is perfect for listeners in the USA for example, or city and country for those in smaller countries. And if you feel uncomfortable doing that, even listing your state (or country for smaller countries) is fine. But knowing your general location is important when someone is looking at logs, to decide if they have a chance to hear the station as well. If you add your location information to your signature, you don't have to include it with every posting.

Third, the use of remote/online SDRs and other radios: Logs of stations (both pirate and otherwise) from remote radios is perfectly acceptable. But, this needs to be noted in the logging. Please mention which remote radio you used. Either by name for the common ones like Twente, or by name/location and URL for the more obscure ones. There's a few reasons for doing this. It's important to know where the radio was, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, when another DXer is trying to decide if they have a chance of hearing it. And, it's only fair. Posting logs of stations using a remote receiver, but with the impression that your own radio/location was used, isn't honest.

Please try to post loggings on the correct board. Sometimes it can be tricky to figure out if a pirate is from the USA or Europe, or even if it is a pirate or a regular SWBC station. Again, a moderator may do some cleanup to fix these things. So don't be too concerned if your posting "disappears", it may just have been moved to the proper board.

When posting a logging, before creating a thread please check and see if one already exists, for that broadcast. If so, reply to the existing thread, instead of creating a new one. Sometimes when a station signs on two or more threads will be created at the same time, it happens. One of the moderators will eventually merge them.

OTOH, please do create a new thread if you are hearing a different transmission from a station that has already been on the air earlier. Don't add your log to a thread for a broadcast from yesterday, or a few days ago. If it is a new broadcast, it deserves a new thread. There are some edge cases of course. If a station is on the air, goes QRT, then comes back a short time later on the same frequency, that can (and probably should) be noted in the thread for the first broadcast.

If a station changes frequency during a broadcast, that is usually noted by modifying the subject/title for the thread, adding the new frequency, such as 6930 USB was 6940 USB. If the station is still on the air, people can see from the subject where to tune in.

Any more comments or thoughts? Replies to this thread welcome!

(This post will be moved to General after a few days)

A very good signal on the SDR recording, generally SIO 444.

I've logged drift net beacons from time to time. You can find logs of them here on the HFU by myself and others, but they could be scattered around a few of the boards.
