Here on the California coast, I was listening to 6185 kHz., at 0946 UT, on March 16. Mexico airing a nice jazz program,
which was considerably stronger than CHBC (China) underneath in Chinese and also playing music; *1000 UT, strong
start of Korea (VOK) with IS and English IDs; NA and into their English programming; distorted audio; VOK killed any
chance of Mexico/China reception!

Shortwave Broadcast / RRI Nabire and Radio Vanuatu - March 15 & 16
« on: March 16, 2024, 2056 UTC »

INDONESIA. 7289.93, RRI Nabire Pro 1, 0815-0925 UT, March 16. Very slowly fading up towards Nabire's sunset at 0910 UT.

0815-0820: EZL songs.

0820+: Start of Ramadan program; intro with some Middle Eastern/Islamic influenced music/singing; mostly long monologues.
At 0900, the start of the often heard QRN.

0913-0917: Maghrib (sunset) call-to-prayer; another day without the usual Islamic Shalawat Tarhim prayer that is
normally played before the call-to-prayer. So perhaps this absence is due to a feature of Ramadan?

0917 till tuned out at 0925, due to the QRN becoming too strong.

March 15 - RRI Nabire (7289.93), 0800 till cut off 0820* UT; QRN (static); Ramadan program.

VANUATU. 7260, R. Vanuatu, on March 16 (Saturday), from 0648 to 0815 UT; yet another day with nicely readable reception;
here are some highlights:

0648-0702: Public service health program in Bislama.

0702-0713; News/sports in Bislama (interesting to hear a sound bite in English dealing with Tuvalu's newly elected
Prime Minister Feleti Teo, who will critically review a treaty made with Australia [news story -
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/28/tuvalu-to-revisit-deal-that-gives-australia-control-of-island-nations-security-agreements ])

0713: PSA in Bislama regarding the National referendum.
My audio of English sound bite/sports/PSA - https://app.box.com/s/rhxnlted263tv7fel9tnuggvgklvsj2l .

0733-0757: The weekend news segment in Bislama.

0800+: The usual "Saturday night" "Customs and Culture" program in Bislama; intro with nice indigenous music.

March 15 - R. Vanuatu (7260), 0607-0740 UT. Here is one detail from my reception; 0608-0636 UT; family radio drama in
Bislama, with the daughter talking to "Papa"; ending with names of actors and the producer; another day with fair reception.

INDONESIA. 7289.93, RRI Nabire Pro 1, on March 12, again with above average reception:

0810-0858 UT: Several announcers chatted; assumed the start of some special Ramadan programming, as it
was not the normal non-stop EZL songs, but today only played a few brief Middle Eastern/Islamic influenced
music/singing.

The usual pre-call-to-prayer Islamic Shalawat Tarhim prayer was NOT aired today; very rare for it not to be played!

0915-0919: Only provided the distinctive Maghrib (sunset) call-to-prayer.

0919 till started to mix with stronger CRI at 0931; Middle Eastern/Islamic influenced music/singing; announcers
mentioning "Ramadan" several times.

Checked 3344.85 kHz. (RRI Ternate) for any reactivation activity for Ramadan, but nothing heard; in past years it did
broadcast for Ramadan.

VANUATU. 7260, R. Vanuatu, 00606-0720 UT, March 12. Another day of very decent reception; mostly readable.
Here are a few highlights:

0612: Nice song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," sung by Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole. (Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I )[I know that Shazam is a popular application for IDing song titles, but I have never used it. If I cannot ID the song by hearing to the words, I don't worry about it]

0631: The often heard multi-language service messages; segment intro and exit with distinctive indigenous drums; today
with probate info for a person deceased from Santo Island, Sanma Province; interested parties can contact the public solicitor's office in Santo, call 33825. My audio - https://app.box.com/s/qq07v4887i82q27y5d7giz3lk8qwevak .

0700-0717: News/sports/weather in Bislama, with several sound bites in English (items about Air Vanuatu and Australia; "cricket" and "football"; "rain," etc.).

INDONESIA. 7289.93, RRI Nabire Pro 1, on March 11, with well above average reception:

0808+ UT: The normal programming of mostly EZL songs and announcers.

After 0900+: No longer EZL songs, but as it is now Ramadan, changed musical format to Middle Eastern/Islamic
influenced music/singing,

0911-0917: Islamic Shalawat Tarhim prayer, before the call-to-prayer.

0917-0921: The distinctive Maghrib (sunset) call-to-prayer.

0921 till started to mix with stronger CRI at 0931.

VANUATU. 7260, R. Vanuatu, 0734-0805 UT, March 11. Program in Bislama about the constitutional referendum; series
of speakers all talking about "information" ("information is power . . . access to information . . . free information," etc.); fair
reception and mostly readable.

5
INDONESIA. 7289.93, RRI Nabire Pro 1, on Mar 10; after being off the air yesterday (0806+ UT) for one day,
returned today; 0809-0931 UT; the normal programming of mostly EZL songs and announcers; *0841, unusually
strong QRN today; brief ham QRM calling CQ with no replies; mostly poor reception; 0910-0920, the normal
Islamic segment; at *0931, assume blocked by start of CRI.

VANUATU. 7260, R. Vanuatu, March 9. Still with above average reception; at 0832 UT, program in Bislama about
International Women's Day, which was observed yesterday.

March 10 - R. Vanuatu off the air 0755+ UT, on all their known frequencies.

absent for a while; just in time for the start of Ramadan (Mar 10 - Sunday); decent reception, but after 0900 the
usual QRN.

0832-0910 UT: The normal programming of mostly EZL songs and announcers.

0910-0916: Islamic Shalawat Tarhim prayer, before the call-to-prayer.

0916-0920: The distinctive Maghrib (sunset) call-to-prayer. Right on time!

VANUATU. 7260, R. Vanuatu, Mar 8. Unusually good; very enjoyable, very readable reception; 0645-0735 UT.
Here are a few highlights:

0652: Item in Bislama about the upcoming Solomon Islands April 17th general elections
(news story - https://www.sibconline.com.sb/17th-of-april-2024-for-joint-elections/ ).

started and ended with the usual religious theme song (1031-1042); followed by religious songs; het from Xinjiang Radio

KOREA SOUTH. 6045, Voice of Freedom. RE: My log Feb 29:
"1220-1235 “Jeongbogi wa Mang-gilli“ (Jeongbogi and Mangili). This is a new program (drama) that started in 2024.
My fifteen minute audio https://app.box.com/s/imkt0bbru75rk15mogufpersfcodnydj ."

Thanks very much to Amano (Japan), who provided some additional interesting info about this program:

"This drama program was previously broadcast on Echo of Hope - VOH as well. VOH version reception sound:
https://radio.chobi.net/bbsasia/img/4255.mp3
*4885kHz 2018/05/15 Tue (Edit 03:05)
・00:00-01:38 2243'02"-2244 '40" Start part
/01:38-03:05 2252'31"-2253'58" End part

At the time, Mr. Cheol Soo from Korea explained about this drama. "The drama 'Jeonbogi and Mangiri' is a popular
drama originally broadcast on KCTV (Korean Central Television), and the VOH version is based on the main character.
It is based on the assumption that two people escape from the North and live in South Korea. I think the theme music
here also utilizes the theme song used in the north."

Hi Paul - The coastal ocean dynamics applications radars (CODAR) have been observed with a variety of CW IDs around 4775 kHz.
One such ID was for WRPV785 ( https://www.radioreference.com/db/fcc/callsign/WRPV785 ), being operated by the Univ. of California
at Davis, with CODAR sites north of San Francisco.

Here at Asilomar State Beach (near Monterey), where I do my SWL'ing, CODAR is rather strong. Article about Monterey Bay CODAR HF radar - https://calhoun.nps.edu/bitstream/handle/10945/41229/cook_paduan_mapping_surface_currents_1997.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y .

Greetings from California! Here on the West Coast, I'm very fortunate to be able to hear Sound of Hope (Taiwan) with
fairly good reception. Today (Feb 24) recorded the normal ID at the ToH ("Xiwang zhi sheng guoji guangbo diantai"
[Sound of Hope international broadcast station]), given twice (once by OM and once by YL) and often followed
as it was today by the news. A reminder that SOH never has time pips at the top-of-the-hour! 6214.9 kHz. is
SOH's lowest frequency. My recording today is fairly typical reception.

Greetings from California!

My observations are that SOH on 6215 and 6280 kHz.(both somewhat on the low side) are very rarely jammed by
CNR1. On the other hand, SOH on 6230 is often jammed with CNR1 programming. I suggest if SOH is heard on
6280, then check for // 6215 and/or 6230.

FYI - - - - Info from Hiroshi, in Japan, who monitors daily: http://hiroshi.mediacat-blog.jp/e153823.html :

Korean and Japanese broadcasts in the 1300s can be heard at 12045, 9705, and 7295kHz. ``Furusato no Kaze News''
features a statement from Megumi Yokota's younger brother, Tetsuya Yokota, recorded on January 27th at the ``National
Gathering to Consider the Abduction Issue in Miyazaki'' as an appeal to the families of the abductees.
The hometown song corner is only broadcast in Japanese and features ``Do-Re-Mi songs''. Song title announcements
are not always made. This week's Korean songs include ``Arigatou'' by Yousui Inoue and Tamio Okuda, and ``Sayonara
Mankind'' by Tama. The Japanese broadcast includes YAMATO's ``Mata Anata wo Omoi'' from the live concert from the
joint public recording on January 14th.
