It's my understanding that he ceased publication a few years ago, so you probably won't be purchasing another package from him.  :(

Box 5074 was active from July of 1983 until July of 1988, at which time the droperator left the island.

Amateur Radio / Re: Age of ham radio operators

I'm really not "older than dirt", but I did get a Tech license in 1994, when I was 49. Got the General the day after code testing was eliminated in 2007, and the Extra in 2014. I still do more listening than transmitting.

I learned CW three times as a teenager (first time at age 12) but never took a test; you still had to drive to the Field Office to test and I wasn't driving. Today I can copy a few letters if sent slowly enough but can't seem to really re-learn it.

Huh? / Re: 1560AM going bye-bye in NYC? Here's why.

OK, they sold the site but did they turn in the license? If not, they could make even more money by selling it to a party interested in rebuilding for the frequency...

It's all about the money:

They sold the original WFME (FM) for $40 Million.
They bought 1560 for $12 Million.
They sell 1560 for $51 Million.

You do the math.

Equipment / Re: BCD436HP CB reception tells me I'm on a diff freq

I'd be willing to bet that the handi is simply overloading the front end of the scanner (and other portable radios). Tune around while transmitting - see if you can hear yourself on other frequencies.

Scanners and portable radios don't have much shielding and are likely to pick up close-by RF.  jta

General Radio Discussion / Re: Icom R75 FM
« on: November 10, 2020, 1935 UTC »
There's FM activity on the 10 meter and 6 meter ham bands, and the radio covers low-band VHF communications, which is primarily narrow FM mode.

If you like the radio already, just wait until you can get an outside antenna! Enjoy...

For Sale / Wanted / Barter / Wanted: Icom OPC-023C DC power cable
« on: September 06, 2020, 1747 UTC »
Anyone have an Icom OPC-023C that they're not using and no longer need? This cable fits the R7100, R8500, and R9000 V/Uhf receivers. Will pay a reasonable price for one. Icom says they're discontinued.

Contact me via PM or direct.

Thanks! jta

Equipment / Re: ICOM ICR-75 vs. TECSUN S-2000
« on: August 08, 2020, 1754 UTC »
As a long-time R-75 user, I agree that the internal speaker isn't that great - but it's intended for utilities (primarily sideband) and voice. I used an outboard Heathkit mono amplifier fed from the Record jack into an external speaker and it was quite good.

The dual PBT certainly does work, although only one of them works in AM mode. The filters also work quite well - but you have to tell the CPU that you've installed them by going into the menu and selecting each one. As Chris said, ya gotta RTFM!

The noise is generated by the power wart, NOT the receiver! I installed .01uF disc capacitors across the diodes in the power wart, which reduced the noise. To eliminate it completely, run from a external DC supply.

I purchased the R-75 somewhere around 20 years ago and only sold it after I picked up an Icom 756Pro3 (with no xmit) as a high-end rcvr. The R-75 is a flexible unit that you can customize to *your* specific interests, and there are a few easy modifications to improve it even more.

In my opinion: If you can find one at a good price in the used market it's still a good buy.

QSLs Received / Re: LRA-36 eQSL

Wow! Congrats.

I tried both Saturdays but not a trace. Summer static and some local noise didn't help.  :(

Had a het against WTAM prior to 9:00 p.m. EDT and it didn't go away after dark. Also had a snippet of a Simon & Garfunkel song at 8:50 but, of course, it disappeared before TOH IDs; most likely WHLI.

Isn't there a Euro channel on 1098? Is there a flamethrower station there?

For Sale / Wanted / Barter / Re: RS PRO-2006 illumination

I'll guess and say that most luminescent panels would run off very low DC voltage, perhaps 3VDC or less. They certainly wouldn't handle 120V (for more than about one nanosecond!)...
