Shortwave Broadcast / R Nacional da Amazonia
« on: February 23, 2017, 1558 UTC »
Anybody know what is going on with R Nacional da Amazonia?   It's been off the air on both 6180 and 11780 for many days now.

RTL-SDR.com has just released their improved dongle.   Among other things it includes a direct sampling mode and bias-T function for switching external devices.   http://www.rtl-sdr.com

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Santa Cruz 0005 UTC on 6/24/2016
« on: June 24, 2016, 0245 UTC »
Radio Santa Cruz (Bolivia) heard stronger than usual tonight.   Measured on 6134.84 KHz according to factory-calibrated FDM-S2.   SINPO34333.   They were playing vocals most of the time but also had several different reports about a Raul Castro speech interspersed with the music.   I'm assuming he must have been visiting Bolivia.   Several clear ID's heard while I listened up to 0100.   I listened on LSB due to what looks like a nearby, much-weaker carrier on 6135.22 (R. Aparecida???).

Equipment / Anyone using a RA0SMS mini-whip antenna?
« on: June 20, 2016, 2303 UTC »
A Russian ham, RA0SMS, is selling a mini-whip active antenna on "the" auction site.   His version appears to be similar to the PA0NHC design.   The PA0NHC design apparently contains improvements over the original PA0RDT design.   The RA0SMS model is cheap ($37 assembled with free shipping) and he has lots of good feedback.   I've been considering buying one but would like some additional opinion.   I'm hoping someone here may know more about it.   Thanks!

Shortwave Broadcast / 7415 KHz at 0500 sign on
« on: June 19, 2016, 1901 UTC »
I hear a station on 7415 KHz signing on at 0500 UTC each night (sometimes a few minutes late!).   There is nothing listed on the EIBI A16 list that matches this station.   It sounds like an African station to me or it might just be programming aimed for Africa.   It has moderate strength most nights.  I've just recently gotten active SWLing again after long absence so I'm having to re-learn DX skills!   Using an Elad FDM-S2 with Wellbrook ALA1530LNP loop antenna.   I'm sure someone else must have heard this and identified it already!   Help?
