Software / SSTV software (Chrome)
« on: June 18, 2021, 1323 UTC »
So, to start off. I am not that computer savvy. A short time ago I purchased a Lenovo Chromebook because my kids have taken over the main PC in the house. Everything was fine for a while, I used it to check DX clusters, QRZ, Youtube etc. Now I have decided to get into SSTV, but I am limited to various apps. I really wanted to download and use windows software - Black Cat or MMSSTV. I have heard various things like somehow using Linux? I think I'm probably screwed in that dept, but if anyone has any creative ideas, I would love to hear them. Thanks

P.S - It would appear that I only have one audio input/Output jack on the chrome book. That may be a problem as well.

WEFAX and SSTV / SSTV/WEFAX Hardware ?
« on: June 11, 2021, 1222 UTC »
I have recently started decoding SSTV using an app on my phone and I'm really enjoying it. The question I have is what Cable/Interface do I need to use my Yaesu FT-950 to transmit/receive SSTV? I will get the software from Black Cat. My next question is what do I need to do to decode WEFAX on my RSP2 SDR? is it just simply having the software on my laptop that the SDR uses? Thanks

Amateur Radio / Small/Inexpensive 20m directional ideas?
« on: May 12, 2021, 1745 UTC »
So I'm about to buy my first rotator soon. A Yaesu G-450. Wanted to get some input on small 3 element or 2 element/Moxon. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Amateur Radio / 6M opening
« on: May 03, 2021, 1327 UTC »
Finally heard some activity on 6M SSb yesterday. Managed to work a station out in Kansas running 100 watts into a dipole. Hopefully I'll catch it again soon.

Equipment / RF return issue
« on: April 27, 2021, 1133 UTC »
I recently bought a Yaesu FT-950 and I'm quite happy with it so far, however I seem to be having what I suspect is RF return. The power on the rig seems to be folding back even thought the radio is tuning for a good SWR. A couple of people I worked on HF SSB said they thought I had RF issues due to the way the radio sounded. I lowered the mic gain a bit and carried on. After these Qso's I worked a station and he helped me adjust my mic gain and compression and said it sounded great. The problem seems to come and go, but it was quite active yesterday. So far I removed the RG8 coax (Choke balun 9 turns 10'' diameter) going to the OCF fed dipole at 25'. I'm going to replace it with a brand new run of RG-213 I have on hand, ground the power supply (Samlex) and try to install toroids on varies cables. Also going to shorten the 6 1/2' power cable that goes to the rig. Any other suggestions or advice? Thanks

The RF Workbench / Building an HF amplifier
« on: April 16, 2021, 1510 UTC »
This may not be an exact fit for this category, but since it involves ham radio, I'm gonna go for it. So I see on Ebay and various sites that there are HF amplifier kits 200 watts and up. The kits are pretty cheap, although I realize they don't include heat sinks, Mosfets etc. How much money would it cost to build an HF amplifier 200 watts and up? And also how much extra parts and skill are required? It doesn't seem like it's a common thing when I talk to other hams. I'm thinking there must be a reason why hundreds of thousands of people are willing to pay $1000.00 and up for amplifiers.

Amateur Radio / 2M SSB - Is it worth the cost?
« on: April 02, 2021, 1710 UTC »
So I may have brought this up in the past, but I find myself thinking about it again. I have a Yaesu 818 and recently purchased a 65 watt amp to get out a bit better signal on FM simplex, however I seem to be in a bit of a dead zone when it comes to VHF, at least to the West of me. There is a net operated about 25 miles from me once a week and I have checked in several times using my portable satellite antenna on 5 watts. I've always been fascinated by 2M SSB/CW even though I know its not super active. I have recently thought about getting a 14 element yagi, but it would only be up at around 25' . I will also need to get a rotator, but I would like to have one anyway for other experiments. Based on the low height and max power of 65 watts I'm wondering what I might expect and whether or not it's worth the investment?  Let me know what you think.

Peskies / English speaking peskies?
« on: January 22, 2021, 1838 UTC »
I know Chris has made a few post regarding the 'Angry Bahstads' but how often do you hear other English speakers operating HF marine. I know there are thousands and thousands of ships sailing on the oceans at any given time. Seems like more of these people would get bored in their down time and mess around on the ship transceiver. If you have any particular frequencies, please post. Thanks

10/11 meters / 10m US to UK/Europe
« on: November 30, 2020, 1317 UTC »
Nice opening yesterday. Managed to work Scotland, Isle of Man and Wales on 10m CW portion 5 watts into an OCF dipole. Heard stations in France, Slovenia as well as stations from California , Arizona and Colorado booming in. Great to work DX on 10 again. Its been a while.

Amateur Radio / 6M Band openings?
« on: November 23, 2020, 1505 UTC »
I was trying to remember the last time I heard a decent band opening on 6M. It's been so long since I worked a station on 6 that I don't even remember if it was a particular time of the year.

Amateur Radio / 12M Band opening
« on: November 23, 2020, 1503 UTC »
12M had some activity yesterday. I was able to work Aruba, Trinidad and Panama on USB using 5 watts and a dipole. Haven't worked 12 in quite some time. Glad to see the band active.

Amateur Radio / Packet radio 2020?

Just curious if packet radio is still a thing in 2020? I know APRS is fairly common now.

Amateur Radio / Satellite attempt
« on: September 27, 2020, 2028 UTC »
I finally had some time and programed my 818 for SO-50 . I was amazed at how quiet the radio was on FM. I kept thinking my squelch was set to high. Eventually after pointing my antenna I was able to hear some stations. I was surprised at how accurately the antenna had to be pointed to hear anything. It was enough to get me excited though. Eventually I'll get some other sat frequencies programmed in and get it all figured out. Thats one of the great things about the hobby, always something new to try. With the weather getting better I plan on spending more time outside trying to catch passes. Any tips on pointing my Elk Lod periodic are welcome!

For Sale / Wanted / Barter / Wanted CW filter for Yaesu FT-817

Looking for a CW filter compatible with the Yaesu FT-817 300 or 500. Thanks

Amateur Radio / Amateur satellite operation
« on: July 19, 2020, 1228 UTC »
So has mentioned in my other post about filters,I have a Yaesu FT-818 on it's way. I really just wanted another 817, but they are still selling for over 500.00 on the used market and a new 818 can be had for $569.00. Part of my decision of choosing the 818 is to be able to do portable satellite operation with either an Arrow or Elk yagi. What have your experiences been working satellites whether they were FM or SSB? I having been doing some research on Amsat to see which birds are active and learning to look up pass times based on my grid square. Let me know what you think.
