Again using the mini-EWE with pre-amp
Almost spring... signals becoming weaker and condition noisier on 300kHz
Last weekend it was the first real summer noise, as we got thunderstorms at the Belgian coast 50km from here. Temperatures reached 16deg celsius, southern Germany had 20deg celsius, which is unusual warm.
Reason for the thunderstorms last weekend - however it is already 10degree cooler and thunderstorms no more close...

Note that Oostende is again on-air. Canadian stations their frequency are impossible, as Oostende is my real local.
Note also, I fine-tuned my rx-location in preferences of the decoding software... the distance to Oostende (Belgian coast) is now correct

DGPS / DGPS Oostende, 312kHz is back on-air

Since this morning, coastal DGPS beacon Oostende on 312khz is back on-air. Obviously here (less than 100km away) with a massive signal...
Perhaps with good condx can be decoded on  the other side of the ocean ?

Here are my logs from last night with the very small active powered EWE-ant.

I found the performance is similar than the 10times larger EWE - the missing sensitivity on the small one is compensated by a high impedance pre-amp directly at the feedpoint of the antenna.

2 differences between both antennas, (only when used on 300kHz)
- the F/B ratio on the small antenne is less than with the big one - about 10-12db for the small one, 15-20db on the large one
- the Front/side ratio is bigger on the small antenna - the side signals are about 6db down to the large antenna, while front signals are of same strength

Overall I am very happy with this small EWE-ant. I works as a highly directional antenna up to 15Mhz - above it becomes more and more a broadside, bi-directional pattern 90deg to the horizontal part of the EWE. That can be interesting also, as two deep nulls develope, when increasing the frequency even more...
So it is cetainly not only a great low-frequency antenna, but also works on the high bands.

I compared the mediumwave (broadcast) band with my 170m Beverage antenna as well as with the large EWE.
The small EWE is outperforming the large EWE, because the pattern is much cleaner! Amazing, that it often is very close to the performance of the 170m Beverage antenna

I also used the antenna for listening in last weekend 160m contest - I must say, that there is no big difference to my 170m beverages, which would require that much work to set-up the Beverages every winter and tear them down in spring. Next winter I will skip the Beverages and make 2ele, active fed versions of that small EWE with switchable phasing to steer the pattern by throwing a switch from the radio-room... much more versatile and easier to build-up and maintain...

Dear,
had to recover from sickness... so not much radio work in the last weeks.. sorry.

Some more news from the test of very small EWE-ant (2.5m x 5m x 2.5m = 10m wire in total)
- I found out, that my test installation was coupling in various other structures around, degrading the pattern
- Today, I cleaned up the sourrounding of the little Test-EWE ant. as much as possible, taking down various other antennes, wires, etc... have detuned the tower today, etc.

Result: much cleaner pattern and much better performance of the little EWE, also on 300kHz (unexpectedly!)

Will try to make some recording coming night.

Comparison with 170m of wire (running southeast/northwest = beverage on higher frequencies) is very encouraging:
UK beacons are with better S/N on the small EWE, than 170m wire.(main direction of both antennas). Scandinavian stations (90deg off main direction) are weaker on EWE than 170m Beverage.
Back direction is about -10 to -15db to front direction - I think, that is what I can expect of the little EWE.

Will now make some daylight comparisons on 300kHz to the very large EWE (20m x 60m x 20m = 100m wire = 10x larger as little version) - will report results here...

In the past, I found that my very large EWE performed excellent towards Northwest, decoding a lot of North-American beacons.

However very soon, I need to dismantle the temporary installations (large EWE, Beverages), as they are erected over agricultural farmland, which will be needed soon to prepare for the next summer season.

I mentioned, that I want to check, how small you can make EWE antennas to still work efficiently on 300kHz. I have now installed a quick test antenna, really really small : 2.5m up, 5m horizontal, 2.5m down to resistor 700Ohm, total instead of 100m wire of the big EWE, only 10m of wire- unfortunately to make it quickly happen, it is NOT pointed to NW (over the atlantic ocean) but to Scandinavia (Northeast).
So far, I did not fine-tune the resistor value - it seems to me, that tuning is necessary, as I can see a lot of southwest Europe - look at the many decodes of Cape Ferret (which is also 'dubbed' as the Brazilian beacon as false decodes). I will try to increase the Front/Back ratio in the future.

A lot of Scandinavia was indeed heard - however the UK, was very weak, although the distance to many of the beacons in Scandinavia is larger than to the UK - this is certainly due to the directivity of the little EWE out of only 10m wire...

I must mention, that a high impedance pre-amp is used to feed the EWE - instead of the impedance matching transformer, I directly connected the pre-amp to pick up the voltage between the wire an a ground rod (1m of copper-pipe, only half inch thickness (gasinstallation material) for quick solution)

So - do not expect a lot of North-America.... wrong direction for this test antenna.

My feeling so far is, that it is really the minimum size, which will work - but only with pre-amp.
I will be better to at least double the size - make an inv. U (EWE style) out of 20m wire, instead of only 10m

Last night conditions were mixed. A lot of fading - at about 0h20 utc my local station became very weak - but also no DX strength enhancement unfortunately
Used my 2ele set-up of verticals with large spacing for 300kHz
Unfortunately Oregon was a false decode.
Some others of the fax US-beacons, where false decodes also.

Condition seem to be not very well to arctic zones - not a glipse heard from NDB LI from most northern Canada, also only 2 decodes from northern Iceland - perhaps they had nice aurora...;-)

Equipment / Best broadband receiving antenna below 500khz (longwave, NDB, DGPS)

Hi,
For reception of the NDB-Band, down to even 10kHz (Alpha beacons), I was searching for the best reception antenna.

I use broadband loops for shortwave (horizontally mounted on an insulated pipe, top of 1.5" /50mm fiberglas) - that works well. However the loops loose sensitivity quickly (also if mounted vertically), if frequency is lowered below the cut-off frequency.

So what I needed:
- directivity, at least down to 250kHz hopefully even lower in frequency
- high enough output of the system
- free of common-mode noise
- steerable in direction, or at least switchable in direction

I use 170m Beverages, but it is always a lot of maintainance involved to keep everything perfectly working. According to Murphy, problems with the wires occur, when weather is terrible, the fields are in deep mud, and temperature is just above the freezing point.... you know what I mean...

So in the meantime I am testing the following:
- Small fiberpoles with attached vertical dipoles, 2x2.5m and a push-pull, high impedance amplifier and feedcable driver in the middle of the vertical dipol
- homebrew phasing network to phase and adjust the output of several vertical dipoles in the shack
- Large spacing between the vertical dipoles (100m = 0.1 x wavelength on 300khz)

If you think, that verticals are noisy, try two of them phased for optimum pattern - you will be astonished, how much better signal to noise ratio can be. The improvement over a single vertical is just incredible.

Several tests still to be done:
- Is it possible to change the vertical dipoles into just groundplanes without getting too much troubles of common-mode noise ?
- I also used a large EWE (20m x 60m x 20m) on 300kHz with great result. However this beast is really large - not easy to install it in many different directions. Also such EWE antenna is just the same as two verticals with the horizontal topwire being the phasing line. However I like to know, what is the smallest EWE, which has still enough output on 300kHz, if you do NOT use any pre-amp and just use passive broadband matiching with matching transformer... I think the efficiency must be in the area of -30dbi, hopefully better. I guess, that a 300kHz EWE cannot be much smaller than what I used recently (20x60x20m). At least you have to have the two vertical parts at a large spacing - otherwise it will become difficult to achieve any directivity without a large signal drop...

Bad conditions, I think. Almost no spots from Europeans in de 474kHz Afu-Band of North-American WSPR-stations a bit higher in frequency.

Assuming much less than ideal propagation last night, I am satisfied with the results of my 2ele vertical dipole, spaced approx 100m
Still I find lots of carriers on DGPS frequencies most likely from NDB's on same channel - sometimes even 2 or 3 carriers, just a few Hz apart. you can see that, when using HDSDR software with very small RBW (below 1Hz resolution) and zoom in...

Now I will try to improve the pattern of the beam, because it is clear, that QRM is the biggest problem when trying to catch the real DX DGPS beacons.

Unfortunately Kenai, AK is a false decode... Also NDB "LT", most northern Canada was not heard during the night - so I think anyway Kenai is an impossible one with such low propagation...

Here are my logs with the slightly changed vertical: it is now a vertical dipole fed in the middle with CAT5 FTP cable - high impedance voltage amplifier directly at the feedpoint, 2x 2.6m, bottom is 3m above flat clear ground...

Happy with the results - HOWEVER !
The big problem is QRM = stations on the same frequency causing interference. That is the reason, why the simple (but very large) EWE is so good.
It is much easier to make a directional antenna with verticals however (similar than my vertical dipole mentioned above). If you can control the phasing a 2ele antenna of 2x vertical dipoles would be great.

For next night I will set-up such system an phase two antennas towards Northwest - may be this is even better than the EWE, reaching 15db front to back ratio. What you need is a lot of spacing on 1km wavelength.
I will start with about 100m spacing between the two antennas. 0.1x wavelength should be possible to phase without too much of signal drop (because you effectively subtract one antenna signal from the other).
If spacing is too close subtraction of two signals will be most likely almost zero....;-(

We will see, what the results with 2ele steerable array will be (next night)

My logs last night on 300kHz with my EWE-Antenna  to Northwest

Alert Bay, BC looked suspicious, so I deleted it.

I wonder, what I can hear to the East with my 170m Beverage wire.
This evening I will make a recording to East direction.

I checked the front to back ratio of my EWE today with a groundwave NDB signal: 15-18db over a very wide frequency range from 100kHz to 2Mhz - amazing.

Antenna was the vertical, for best omni-directional pattern.
Distance is also limited due to local man-made noise, which is definitly higher than during nighttime
But my location is semi-rural and not in the city, which helps
I am surprised signals over more than 1000km  made it...
