Amateur Radio / Re: Xiegu G90
« on: November 30, 2021, 0256 UTC »
I have a G90 and have been producing Youtube videos at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsbBSwXJzVtkX6ovo-QZATA on getting the most out of it.

It is a very decent radio especially for the price. But there are the obvious drawbacks of the tiny screen, a somewhat un-intuitive user interface and only 20 watts (which for digital and CW is just fine).

But it is quite capable and well worth the price. Could it be your only radio? Sure, but the 'smallness' factor can get a bit tedious. It is not my only radio, but I use it quite a bit, especially on 10 meters and for digital modes.

I'll most likely get a DX-SR8T shortly after doing some soul-searching about how I play radio. Now I can't fault Icon, Kenwood or Yaesu for thinking we have deep pockets, but anything under $700 is too much for my current skinny wallet. Too many other things in life to buy, like a Roku box, new golf clubs, or that set of 60's Flinstones grape jelly juice glasses I saw on eBay. I know some lab somewhere said the Alinco has some issues with image rejection, but I'm bald, so I'm used to rejection.

I'll let you know what I think after I get it on the desk and it comes alive. If it works as well as my old Kenwood TS-440S, I'll be happy.

I'd keep checking at Martin Lynch to see what they get in used. If you are not in the money, and frankly, who is, you can try the Alinco DX-SR8 and see if you like it. I think the ARRL labs didn't find it to be so fantastic, with image rejection being on the not so great side, but for L300 (or about 450 on this side of the pond) it's probably pretty acceptable. The Icon R75 is quite a bit more expensive.

Put one in the attic for 20M once. 25 feet long. With an MFJ tuner, 1.5:1-ish SWR. Still was a dud. 25 foot long dummy load. And with any power over, say, 25 watts, best to have capacity hats on the end. My experience is, don't bother.

I had one...for a while. I should have known better. Had an original 909. Was deaf off of the whip antenna. Sold it on eBay. Saw a couple of eHam reviews and a Youtube vid that said the X model solved the deafness. NOT. Can't hear WWV on 10MHZ in the afternoon when a friend's Tecsun PL-660 right next to it has it loud and clear. Plug in the external wire reel antenna, and they're the same.

Not much of a portable then is it. At least on SW. On MW and FM is excellent. Especially the sound of the FM audio. Heck of an expensive FM radio.

And back to the store it went.

Bummer  :'(
