Picking it up here in DM48 as well, barely above the noise. Doesn't sound like a native english speaker...

Equipment / Re: What Radio Did you start your listening hobby with?
« on: February 18, 2012, 0848 UTC »
I first started listening on my Great Grandmother's Westinghouse WR-228. Maybe it's just my memory playing tricks but that old tube behemoth was the best sounding rig I've ever heard. I'd spend hours tweaking that vernier VFO to get the signal sounding just right. It also had the word "POLICE" on the dial, just above the broadcast part of the MW band. Although I never heard anything there, it was my first inkling that radio was more than just Perry Como, The Beatles and Doris Day. From there I moved on to a Trans-Oceanic from the late 50's/early 60's (which I still have) and discovered SW broadcast, number stations, WWV and The Woodpecker. Yeah, now I have my ham ticket and the radios I own have features I couldn't have dreamed of when I was seven, but that old Westinghouse had enough magic built in that I'm still hooked.

Equipment / Re: all round desktop dx radio

I'll second all the recommendations for the RC75, for LW to 6m it's an excellent performer. For FM broadcast DX you might want to look at the GE SuperRadio III. We have a local FM station here with a 100 KW transmitter about 15 line-of-sight miles away from me, they also have a 10 W translator about 5 line-of-sight miles away, separated by 200 khz. My SuperRadio is the only receiver I have that is sensitive enough to give crystal clear audio from both xmitters using a stock omni antenna. The GE isn't fancy but it works and looks like it can be had for < $50.00 USD off ebay.

The *only* thing stopping the government from knocking on your door is their lack of interest. Your IP is *always* logged and can *always* be tracked the street address from which it was used.

Re: WBCQ 15420 report updated: Scare

Paul,

It`s South Carolina [NON], which means it originates there but is not
transmitted from there.

may I take this opportunity of emphasizing that there is no cannibalism in the British Navy. Absolutely none, and when I say none, I mean there is a certain amount....

Utility / Re: Software for WEFAX/SSTV?
« on: October 16, 2011, 2345 UTC »
I've used Digital Master 780, part of Ham Radio Deluxe for SSTV and it works pretty well, will also decode CW, PSK31, Olivia, Hellschrieber, RTTY and more. It also has a pretty waterfall display. I don't know if anything else works better 'cause I haven't tried anything else...

Equipment / Re: How can i pirate radio on 11 Meters?
« on: September 29, 2011, 0037 UTC »
You need to school yourself on some very basic electronics. Even if we told you step-by-step, it wouldn't really help without that knowledge. I'm willing to bet that the pirates (and most everyone else in here) really know their radio and if they aren't closet hams they would very easily pass the test. It's because they love radio. I fell in love listening to my grandmothers giant tube 1936 Westinghouse set when I was 7. I've been taking things apart ever since, I put them back together sometimes. Successfully even. You obviously have the radio bug too, welcome! Now start taking things apart!

Well, in order to fit the loosest definition of "pirate", you would need to:

A. Obtain an 11m transmitter

B. Familiarize yourself with Part 95 of the FCC regulations.

C. Break one of them.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Non-conspiracy Theory on the FRN
« on: August 31, 2011, 1734 UTC »
Corq is right about nameservers not answering queries, ns1.joplinglobe.com does answer pings, so whatever A record that name points to is up, but it does not answer on port 53 (DNS). ns1.joplinglobeonline.com looks like it doesn't even have an A record anymore. the joplinglobe.com site uses teklinks.com for secondary and tertiary name service so that site still works. After running ISPs for 12 years, I'm guessing someone did a favor for FRN by hosting their zone file on the dl, and after the tornado mess someone decided not to do DNS on ns1.joplinglobe.com any more and frn.net "vanished". Programmatically, moving a .net is no different from moving a .com or .info or .whatever, BIND (DNS software) doesn't care. Moving domains becomes a chore when critters with opposable thumbs get involved.
