SDR - Software Defined Radio / Re: Elad FDM S3 under development
« on: November 28, 2017, 1656 UTC »
Elad just recently (last week or so) put it on their European website.  Price listed as 949 euros but no specs listed!  I wonder if it's really available or not?  They recently posted that they were still waiting on FCC approval before it could be sold in US.

I found them (both frequencies) back on the air last night around 0500Z when I checked.   I listened for a couple hours, glad it's back!

Thank you very much for that information.   I listen to them every night and have been missing them!

Anybody know what is going on with R Nacional da Amazonia?   It's been off the air on both 6180 and 11780 for many days now.

SDR - Software Defined Radio / Re: Software Phasing with your SDR

Great video, Chris!   Could you tell us what antennas were used for that demonstration (were they identical, etc.)?

This is a very exciting development, Chris (and Ben).   A while back I was considering dual receiver options so I could experiment with diversity reception.   I wound up ordering a LimeSDR which I hope will be usable for similar purposes.   I have at least another month to wait before the LimeSDR's start shipping.   If I understand correctly, it appears that SdrDx can't support LimeSDR (not sound card-based).   I am holding out hope that perhaps Simon Brown, GK4ELI, may add diversity reception capabilities to his SDR-Console application.   He has been a major LimeSDR proponent and certainly has the skills.

If appropriate support for the LimeSDR does not materialize quickly, I will probably order a dual-receiver Afedri and sell the LimeSDR!

RTL-SDR.com has just released their improved dongle.   Among other things it includes a direct sampling mode and bias-T function for switching external devices.   http://www.rtl-sdr.com

Some time ago, maybe December 2015 (?), the QS1R designer Phil Covington posted on the QS1R_SDRMAX Yahoo group that a new version was in the works.   As I recall, he reported that he had been in bad health for quite a while but that it was improving.   The new model was to be better and less expensive.   I just looked through some of the old posts and could not find his posting but there were a lot of posts from others asking him for details.   Maybe someone can find that original posting - I think it was in the middle of a thread.  It would sure be interesting if it gets produced eventually, most current QS1R owners seem very pleased with it!

Equipment / Re: Anyone using a RA0SMS mini-whip antenna?
« on: July 24, 2016, 0028 UTC »
As the OP on this thread, I thought I would give you an update on my experiences with the RA0SMS mini-whip active antenna.   I actually ordered two of them because I have an antenna phasing unit and wanted to try some phasing experiments with them.   My order arrived in only two weeks – much faster than I expected!   Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to mount them properly (high and far from the house) yet.   My first experiences were with them located indoors (bad idea!).   I’ve been battling RFI for some time now in my listening area.   I use common-mode chokes and a galvanic isolator on the antenna lead-in.   The antennas are definitely sensitive to local RFI sources as expected, they make great RF sniffers!   I briefly moved one outside (onto a wood fence) and compared it to my indoor mag loop antenna.   The station signal levels were similar but the active was still picking up RFI (from somewhere) pretty well!   The receiver noise floor when using the antenna is fairly low – can be higher or lower than the mag loop depending on the frequency.   One interesting (bad) thing I discovered with the active antenna was the presence of images from a strong local AM station on 1230 Khz (1 KW, 1 mile away) – these were at harmonic frequencies (e.g. 4920 and 6150).   Those are not seen with the mag loop so I am calling them images.   I hope to get at least one of the mini-whip antennas mounted outside better in the near future.   With proper installation and grounding, I’m sure they could be a reasonable choice for someone with limited real estate and/or finances.   Hopefully I will have more information to share later.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Santa Cruz 0005 UTC on 6/24/2016
« on: June 24, 2016, 0245 UTC »
Radio Santa Cruz (Bolivia) heard stronger than usual tonight.   Measured on 6134.84 KHz according to factory-calibrated FDM-S2.   SINPO34333.   They were playing vocals most of the time but also had several different reports about a Raul Castro speech interspersed with the music.   I'm assuming he must have been visiting Bolivia.   Several clear ID's heard while I listened up to 0100.   I listened on LSB due to what looks like a nearby, much-weaker carrier on 6135.22 (R. Aparecida???).

Thanks for that information, I will order one.   Too bad it may take up to 2 months for shipping!

Equipment / Anyone using a RA0SMS mini-whip antenna?
« on: June 20, 2016, 2303 UTC »
A Russian ham, RA0SMS, is selling a mini-whip active antenna on "the" auction site.   His version appears to be similar to the PA0NHC design.   The PA0NHC design apparently contains improvements over the original PA0RDT design.   The RA0SMS model is cheap ($37 assembled with free shipping) and he has lots of good feedback.   I've been considering buying one but would like some additional opinion.   I'm hoping someone here may know more about it.   Thanks!

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: 7415 KHz at 0500 sign on
« on: June 19, 2016, 2036 UTC »
Thank you RW Observer, that sounds like it exactly!  I just found it in the 2016 WRTH frequency listings (the book), I've been relying on the A16 update on EIBISpace too much I guess!  Really appreciate the help!

Shortwave Broadcast / 7415 KHz at 0500 sign on
« on: June 19, 2016, 1901 UTC »
I hear a station on 7415 KHz signing on at 0500 UTC each night (sometimes a few minutes late!).   There is nothing listed on the EIBI A16 list that matches this station.   It sounds like an African station to me or it might just be programming aimed for Africa.   It has moderate strength most nights.  I've just recently gotten active SWLing again after long absence so I'm having to re-learn DX skills!   Using an Elad FDM-S2 with Wellbrook ALA1530LNP loop antenna.   I'm sure someone else must have heard this and identified it already!   Help?
