DGPS / Re: DGPS Logs 12-13 Mar 2018
« on: March 13, 2018, 2127 UTC »
Thanks for info - I will check the latest Beta, asap...
Noontime is indeed impossible - even at sunrise time the signals quickly fade out... at least here in central Europe...

Directivity of EWE is in line of the plane of the inv.U  - Main direction from the resistor end towards the feedpoint... (opposite of what you know from a Beverage, where the main direction is From feedpoint to resistor.... with EWE antenna it is opposite)
The vertical part with the resistor at the bottom is a reflector to the front vertical, which is directly fed. The horizontal wire is the phasing line... simply spoken...

There are some papers from Chris Trask, who designed excellent pre-amps.
I am in the process to build just for fun the pre-amp of figure 12 in this paper:
http://home.earthlink.net/~christrask/Complementary%20Push-Pull%20Amplifiers.pdf
However this is really homebrewing...
There is also a nice pre-amp similar than Trask's design of figure 5 in the article from a Ham in colorado:
http://www.w0qe.com/Projects/active_monopole_amplifier.html - also excellent design.
There are even PCB's available from the PCB maker in the USA.... check the document of W0QE at the bottom...:
https://www.oshpark.com/shared_projects/kHEriNao

The mentioned designs should be the best pre-amps made in USA to my knowlegde...  Clifton labs is not existing anymore, I think Jack (the owner of Clifton labs) died some time ago, sadly...
He made excellent HF-designs also!

I think the Trask Designs mentioned above are much better than DX-engineering pre-amps...

Good luck.... it is worthwhile to invest into this technology of really top-notch pre-amps I think...

Next night I will compare the 170m Beverage on shortwave 40m in WSPR mode reception with my small EWE... I believe the EWE will be competitive as found out at sunrise this morning... so no recording of 300kHz next night...

Chris,
does the software decode signals on 284khz ???  (Your false Norwegian spot)
I think I checked manually frequencies below 285kHz here with multi-PSK and found some medium loud polish stations there - however your software never decoded them.

Switching antenna's for the dipole input of the LZ1AQ pre-amp is easy, if you use this second LZ1AQ pre-amp ONLY for dipole input antennas:
- just use some of the remaining FTP cable wires to switch an additional relais
- you do not need all CAT5 wires, if you do not use Loop input
Hardwire the CAT5 cable to the green screw terminals rather than using the RJ45 connector...

Ulli, ON5KQ

P.S.: depending on your local AM-transmitters, you may need to use the input Balun (jumper settings!) for the dipole input.
In my case it is easy - we do not have any local super-Mediumwave station. As long as no signal is above -15dbm ... no problem with IM2 signals on higher shortwave frequencies here..
However you need to check it.
Do not increase the size of the EWE - it will not change the pattern, but only increase signal amount... potentially makes trouble with too much signal, so you need the Balun jumper.
Without balun jumper and good common-mode chokes, you can use the mini-EWE from 20kHz up - very clean!

6
Again using the mini-EWE with pre-amp
Almost spring... signals becoming weaker and condition noisier on 300kHz
Last weekend it was the first real summer noise, as we got thunderstorms at the Belgian coast 50km from here. Temperatures reached 16deg celsius, southern Germany had 20deg celsius, which is unusual warm.
Reason for the thunderstorms last weekend - however it is already 10degree cooler and thunderstorms no more close...

Note that Oostende is again on-air. Canadian stations their frequency are impossible, as Oostende is my real local.
Note also, I fine-tuned my rx-location in preferences of the decoding software... the distance to Oostende (Belgian coast) is now correct

DGPS / Small, active, mini-EWE's at ON5KQ
« on: March 13, 2018, 0820 UTC »
"This is with the antenna described in these posts?"

Yes, however in the beginning, I only had such mini-EWE antenna to the direction Northeast = 90degree off, not for trans-atlantic reception. This first version is excellent for Scandinavia and also Asia.
This last reception report was the result of a second antenna, exactly as the first (2.5m x 5m x 2.5m = 10m wire), but pointed to Northwest.
This new mini-EWE (with active pre-amp at the feedpoint) is exactly in the same direction as the large EWE - so I can quickly switch for comparison ...
This morning however, I tested the small EWE in comparison with my 170m Beverage on the hambands 80m/40m for reception of the north-american WSPR stations (digital modulation with extremely low power, milliwatts instead of kWatts...hi)
It is amazing, that even the 170m Beverage on 7Mhz represents 4wavelength and has a clean, very directive pattern, the measured signal/noise ratio for USA-Stations after sunrise is the same with the mini-EWE....  I can confirm, that the Beverage really works - so the Beverage-reference for comparison is a very very good antenna! So far, I do not really understand, why such small EWE works THAT well compared with the best of the best... (I never had anything better than my Beverages on lower shortwave bands) But this small EWE makes Beverages obsolete, for sure...

In the past for 300kHz I have compared the small EWE with my best antenna on 300kHz - the large EWE. As the 170m Beverage looses it's directive pattern on 300kHz (too short for this band!), I assume, that the small EWE is much better than the Beverage on 300kHz,also. I will test it coming evening/night.

As soon as weather becomes better, I will start planning and errecting the first 2ele beam with the small EWE-elements. Each element will get an individual high-impedance amplifier - I will try to reduce spacing as much as possible to increase bandwidth to high frequencies also (shortwave bands). I think even 10m of spacing will work certainly for shortwave - it will be interesting, to test, if with that small spacing directivity increase on medium/longwave is possible as well.
At least with the pre-amps at the feedpoints of the elements, there is really enough signal output, even for out of phase operation (180deg phase shift)

You can use the LZ1AQ pre-amp at each antenna feedpoint, using the high-impedance input (original for dipole). At my qth no input balun necessary and plenty of signal output even down to 100kHz...

DGPS / DGPS Oostende, 312kHz is back on-air
« on: March 12, 2018, 1258 UTC »
Since this morning, coastal DGPS beacon Oostende on 312khz is back on-air. Obviously here (less than 100km away) with a massive signal...
Perhaps with good condx can be decoded on  the other side of the ocean ?

« on: March 12, 2018, 1239 UTC »
Here are my logs from last night with the very small active powered EWE-ant.

I found the performance is similar than the 10times larger EWE - the missing sensitivity on the small one is compensated by a high impedance pre-amp directly at the feedpoint of the antenna.

2 differences between both antennas, (only when used on 300kHz)
- the F/B ratio on the small antenne is less than with the big one - about 10-12db for the small one, 15-20db on the large one
- the Front/side ratio is bigger on the small antenna - the side signals are about 6db down to the large antenna, while front signals are of same strength

Overall I am very happy with this small EWE-ant. I works as a highly directional antenna up to 15Mhz - above it becomes more and more a broadside, bi-directional pattern 90deg to the horizontal part of the EWE. That can be interesting also, as two deep nulls develope, when increasing the frequency even more...
So it is cetainly not only a great low-frequency antenna, but also works on the high bands.

I compared the mediumwave (broadcast) band with my 170m Beverage antenna as well as with the large EWE.
The small EWE is outperforming the large EWE, because the pattern is much cleaner! Amazing, that it often is very close to the performance of the 170m Beverage antenna

I also used the antenna for listening in last weekend 160m contest - I must say, that there is no big difference to my 170m beverages, which would require that much work to set-up the Beverages every winter and tear them down in spring. Next winter I will skip the Beverages and make 2ele, active fed versions of that small EWE with switchable phasing to steer the pattern by throwing a switch from the radio-room... much more versatile and easier to build-up and maintain...

DGPS / ON5KQ DGPS logs
« on: March 11, 2018, 1245 UTC »
Dear,
had to recover from sickness... so not much radio work in the last weeks.. sorry.

Some more news from the test of very small EWE-ant (2.5m x 5m x 2.5m = 10m wire in total)
- I found out, that my test installation was coupling in various other structures around, degrading the pattern
- Today, I cleaned up the sourrounding of the little Test-EWE ant. as much as possible, taking down various other antennes, wires, etc... have detuned the tower today, etc.

Result: much cleaner pattern and much better performance of the little EWE, also on 300kHz (unexpectedly!)

Will try to make some recording coming night.

Comparison with 170m of wire (running southeast/northwest = beverage on higher frequencies) is very encouraging:
UK beacons are with better S/N on the small EWE, than 170m wire.(main direction of both antennas). Scandinavian stations (90deg off main direction) are weaker on EWE than 170m Beverage.
Back direction is about -10 to -15db to front direction - I think, that is what I can expect of the little EWE.

Will now make some daylight comparisons on 300kHz to the very large EWE (20m x 60m x 20m = 100m wire = 10x larger as little version) - will report results here...

Regards from Belgium,
ON5KQ

Hi Chris,
I am using the LZ1AQ pre-amp.
As the EWE is not a magnetic loop, I am using directly the inputs of the voltage amplifier (Dipole) as Chavdar describes in his document: http://active-antenna.eu/tech-docs/aaa-1c-addendum.pdf

At the moment I have removed the jumpers for the input balun, as I thought the antenna is very small...
However here in Europe I get huge signals from shortwave BC-bands even with bad condx...
The Web-receiver is using this little EWE now (although a different antenna picture is shown - I just do not have a proper picture yet)
link to the receiver: http://on5kq.ddns.net:8073

I notice on the webreceiver just starting IM2 distortion signals in our local afternoon (for example on 14100kHz beacons frequency) - I think even with this small loop on the shortwave bands the signals are really really strong...
So to prevent such IM2 distortion in the pre-amp (it is only noticeable, if you really search for it on the band, because the distortion is still very small), you better install the jumpers to include the input balun of the voltage amplifier of LZ1AQ's design.
With the jumpers set, you will never see distortion products coming from the pre-amp (my findings)

To enlarge the EWE to 20m long wire (so 5m x 10m x 5m) has several serious drawbacks:
- Directivity on the higher shortwave bands will disappear or at least becomes a very different pattern, instead of the desired, pronounced  cadioid
- As I have transmit antennes very close (less than a wavelength), the influence of the 20m wire will be much greater to the existing transmit antennas (also vertical phased array).
-If you increase the size of the EWE, it will be much more difficult to install a multi element array out of several EWE antennas. I am planning at least 2ele arrays in several directions. Now with the 5m long invU style, it is very easy and almost unvisible to install several of such beams at the side of the garden, without using extended space on the farmland arround (more of a praktical issue)
- A larger EWE-element will help for better directivity only below 1Mhz, at the price of less or no directivity on frequencies above 10MHz - at least for summer, I prefer better directivity on the higher frequencies.

Conclusion: I think the antenna is performing well on 300khz - only the real specialist may want better directivity and increase the size. However I prefer to keep the nice performance up to the highest shortwave frequencies (30Mhz). For 300kHz, I will install a second small EWE to Northwest - so I can verify the directivity between the NorthEast one and the NorthWest one. Then to get a better F/B ratio, I will install second elements in line at both systems, for better reception of the stations in the desired direction (switchable)- spacing will be 60m initially (best for lowest frequency incl 300kHz), both elements fed with LZ1AQ pre-amps and phased 180degree - this will get you a very sharp pattern broadband over many octaves.

I used to have such an array made with Flags, but passive, without pre-amps. It was usable very well on 1.8-7Mhz - in Mediumwave or lowerin frequency  it was totally deaf. With the pre-amps, this antenna really awake and is alive again... Listen on the web-receiver to verify the high sensitivity even of the single element (10m wire) system.

Will let you know further developments...

DGPS / DGPS Logs from Belgium - nighttime 27/28th of Februar
« on: February 28, 2018, 1224 UTC »
In the past, I found that my very large EWE performed excellent towards Northwest, decoding a lot of North-American beacons.

However very soon, I need to dismantle the temporary installations (large EWE, Beverages), as they are erected over agricultural farmland, which will be needed soon to prepare for the next summer season.

I mentioned, that I want to check, how small you can make EWE antennas to still work efficiently on 300kHz. I have now installed a quick test antenna, really really small : 2.5m up, 5m horizontal, 2.5m down to resistor 700Ohm, total instead of 100m wire of the big EWE, only 10m of wire- unfortunately to make it quickly happen, it is NOT pointed to NW (over the atlantic ocean) but to Scandinavia (Northeast).
So far, I did not fine-tune the resistor value - it seems to me, that tuning is necessary, as I can see a lot of southwest Europe - look at the many decodes of Cape Ferret (which is also 'dubbed' as the Brazilian beacon as false decodes). I will try to increase the Front/Back ratio in the future.

A lot of Scandinavia was indeed heard - however the UK, was very weak, although the distance to many of the beacons in Scandinavia is larger than to the UK - this is certainly due to the directivity of the little EWE out of only 10m wire...

I must mention, that a high impedance pre-amp is used to feed the EWE - instead of the impedance matching transformer, I directly connected the pre-amp to pick up the voltage between the wire an a ground rod (1m of copper-pipe, only half inch thickness (gasinstallation material) for quick solution)

So - do not expect a lot of North-America.... wrong direction for this test antenna.

My feeling so far is, that it is really the minimum size, which will work - but only with pre-amp.
I will be better to at least double the size - make an inv. U (EWE style) out of 20m wire, instead of only 10m

Ulli, ON5KQ

DGPS / DGPS Logs from Belgium - nighttime 21/22th of Februar
« on: February 22, 2018, 1404 UTC »
Last night conditions were mixed. A lot of fading - at about 0h20 utc my local station became very weak - but also no DX strength enhancement unfortunately
Used my 2ele set-up of verticals with large spacing for 300kHz
Unfortunately Oregon was a false decode.
Some others of the fax US-beacons, where false decodes also.

Condition seem to be not very well to arctic zones - not a glipse heard from NDB LI from most northern Canada, also only 2 decodes from northern Iceland - perhaps they had nice aurora...;-)

Regards from Belgium - Ulli, ON5KQ

Hi,
For reception of the NDB-Band, down to even 10kHz (Alpha beacons), I was searching for the best reception antenna.

I use broadband loops for shortwave (horizontally mounted on an insulated pipe, top of 1.5" /50mm fiberglas) - that works well. However the loops loose sensitivity quickly (also if mounted vertically), if frequency is lowered below the cut-off frequency.

So what I needed:
- directivity, at least down to 250kHz hopefully even lower in frequency
- high enough output of the system
- free of common-mode noise
- steerable in direction, or at least switchable in direction

I use 170m Beverages, but it is always a lot of maintainance involved to keep everything perfectly working. According to Murphy, problems with the wires occur, when weather is terrible, the fields are in deep mud, and temperature is just above the freezing point.... you know what I mean...

So in the meantime I am testing the following:
- Small fiberpoles with attached vertical dipoles, 2x2.5m and a push-pull, high impedance amplifier and feedcable driver in the middle of the vertical dipol
- homebrew phasing network to phase and adjust the output of several vertical dipoles in the shack
- Large spacing between the vertical dipoles (100m = 0.1 x wavelength on 300khz)

If you think, that verticals are noisy, try two of them phased for optimum pattern - you will be astonished, how much better signal to noise ratio can be. The improvement over a single vertical is just incredible.

I regular post my overnight reception results in de DGPS portion of this forum

Several tests still to be done:
- Is it possible to change the vertical dipoles into just groundplanes without getting too much troubles of common-mode noise ?
- I also used a large EWE (20m x 60m x 20m) on 300kHz with great result. However this beast is really large - not easy to install it in many different directions. Also such EWE antenna is just the same as two verticals with the horizontal topwire being the phasing line. However I like to know, what is the smallest EWE, which has still enough output on 300kHz, if you do NOT use any pre-amp and just use passive broadband matiching with matching transformer... I think the efficiency must be in the area of -30dbi, hopefully better. I guess, that a 300kHz EWE cannot be much smaller than what I used recently (20x60x20m). At least you have to have the two vertical parts at a large spacing - otherwise it will become difficult to achieve any directivity without a large signal drop...

I will post my findings here for the community...

If you have any further suggestion, let us know ...
