Utility / Re: 500ms tick on 23856u
« on: October 29, 2011, 0622 UTC »
I don't believe that it is local noise. It doesn't fade. I'm able to receive it well day and night. It doesn't seem to be an image or birdie or something like that.

I powered just about everything in the house down and still get it. I also can receive it on my Kaito 1103 as well as the Icom 718. I can also receive it on the 1103 about a mile from my house so its not too local.

I also made a recording of it over that last 18 hours and I found that it does deviate from the fast half-second tick/dit that I had heard on shorter observations. It seems to be an impercise though not necessarily random either. At semi-regular intervals a contious tone will occur for x number of seconds. It will then return for a semi-regular dit interval. Though some times are close, other times seem to repeat. Its wierd its not regular but its not random sounding either. Particularly the 30s / 3m 29s / 7s combo that repeats. Any ideas?

Here is what I analyzed from my recording of about 18 hours (first continuous tone captured ~0858z Oct 28th UTC).

Great signal and audio tonight. Noise is minimal but fading is a little above average but it's still very listenable.

Good mix as well so far Linkin Park, Beach Boys (?), and Don Henley. Currently a country/trucker CB tune.

I came across something similar on 23856u. It has a very consistent 500ms dit. I'm still able to pick that one up here in AZ.

I scanned across your range and didn't hear anything like from your video or similar to what I heard on mine.

Pretty good signal here tonight. Only a little bit fading, the noise would peak up fairly regularly.

Just caught the 0445UTC sign off.

HF Beacons / Beacon at 6947u - 13 dits and 1 dah
« on: October 24, 2011, 0350 UTC »
Heard what sounds to be a beacon on 6947 (? 6947.1). It transmits 13 dits and 1 dah on a loop. I've been hearing this since about 0300z. Its audible at the top of the noise here at my location. Any idea where this one is located or additional details?

The few places I looked and searched I didn't seem to find any mention of this one. Is there a "definitive" reference for PHFER's? Google and the HFU Wiki seem to be my best resources at this point.

Having a hard time pulling this one out of the noise still hearing it at 0400z here. Caught what sounded like a cougar/panther growl at 0410z, might have been part of the station id but missed most of it. This was followed up Gun N' Roses / Welcome to the Jungle.

Update: I believe I caught the last station ID and it was Renegade Radio.

Can hear audio in the top of the noise. Sounds like some kind of "Tarzan/Ape" dialog at around 0040. Not much fade just too much noise.

CW message 'tr' sent repeatedly. Quite a bit of drift but a stable signal, below average fade, audible just above the noise at S7/S8 here in Mesa, AZ.

Pretty tough to hear tonight. Did catch the CW ident at around 0205z and The Crystal Ship announce at around 0210z. Mostly in the noise but does rise above it briefly.

Just caught a RTN station ID at 0301z. Blues music. Quite a bit of fading and noise tonight only S7/S8 into central Arizona. It seems to be improving a little bit in the last 5 minutes or so.

Utility / KSM

Ran across KSM when I was scanning this morning. They are transmitting a repeating CW message on 12993khz.

Looks like they are participating in Pacificon. Pretty strong signal here in Arizona, but according to their site they are putting out 5kw from California so not hard to tune that one.

Utility / 500ms tick on 23856u
« on: October 16, 2011, 0029 UTC »
I was scanning the higher frequencies this afternoon seeing as how the sun has been so cooperative lately and I came across something on 23856 usb.

It's a tick every 500ms. The signal is stable and doesn't seem to alter from this pattern. It's very metronome like. I can't seem to find any record of anything being established on this frequency. Any idea's from anyone out there?

It seems to still be transmitting as I'm writing this. I've also posted a recording. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/45572545/500msBeat_23856u_15Oct2011.mp3

Just curious.

Thanks,

Nothing in central Arizona at 0000z. Unfortunately I'm hearing WYFR drift up from 6915 so double no luck.

I'm not hearing anything from RTN on 6925 now at 0520z, but I am hearing something on 6930u. It not particularly intelligible down in the noise but it sounds like mostly metal music.

Pretty clear S9 signal here into central Arizona tonight. Quite a bit of fade though. Got a station ID at 0345z, then into some electronic music.
