10/11 meters / Re: RTTY Beacon or transmissions on 27.551 USB
« on: October 09, 2021, 0044 UTC »
I converted PTR11EXP's video to a wave file and tried to decode the signal but was unsuccessful. The mark and space is irregular and I had a hard time with the baud rate as the signal was wondering around. Difficult to get a good lock. I would have to build a continuous loop on 1 good segment to attempt any further analysis.

Anyone been able to decode the digital? I have tries a few modes but have not been unsuccessful. Watch the waterfall display. I have seen the call sign transmitted as an image.

22:23 UTC - Weak but readable. Nice S7 signal with good modulation into my part of North America. This is the first time it comes in this well for me;
22:34 UTC - Switched antenna to the Wellbrook loop. Sounding much better now with less noise, Supertramp - The Logical Song followed by an interesting mix of Riders on the Storm;
23:26 UTC - Station ID;
23:31 UTC - Carrier off and end of broadcast.

Thank you for the show.

Equipment / Re: Best MWDX Antenna?
« on: October 06, 2021, 0210 UTC »
I am trying to correlate the figures / prediction from https://prop.kc2g.com/ and it is not working for me right now. Based on the variety of other propagation tools that I use it seems skewed.

Here are the screen shots from the site compared to Collins PropMan, HamCap and VOACAP. All 3 of these track pretty close on a point-to-point circuit between Toronto and Boulder. I tweak these for worst case scenario, 100 Watts and 0dB gain on a dipole @ 35 feet off the ground. Even with that, the FOT does not come close to what I see on the website. The MUF seems pretty close. Something to further look into on a rainy day.

Rob,

Thanks for the prop link. I didn't have that one in my collection.

Same for Nooelec pre-amp. I'll put it on the list of items to order. I can sympathize with the use of the 10dB attenuator. I had the same issue with my Wellbrook loop. That is why I replaced my 10dB step attenuator with the Flamingo filters. They are now in-line all the time to attenuate the AM and FM bands by +/- 30dB.

Solar activity is doing very strange things these days.

Check out my post on picking up WRMI on 49890.0 kHz AM, 28 Sept 2021
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,86930.msg280243.html#msg280243

And no, it's not a typo: 49 MHz, plus I am nowhere near Florida and WRMI's transmitter - LOL

03:11 UTC - Loud and clear with rap music.

General Radio Discussion / Re: CHU 6660 kHz Harmonic
« on: October 02, 2021, 0305 UTC »
02:30 UTC 02 OCT 2021 - It is finally my turn to hear the harmonic --- pips, time data and voice announcements. The harmonic is also clearly visible on the waterfall. I managed to intercept it while decoding HFDL data on 6661.0 kHz. I am located +/- 345 km / 215 miles West of the CHU transmitter site.

Rob, good to know about the Nooelec preamp. I was thinking of getting one on my next order just to play with. If you reacall, way back towards the start of this post, I had mentioned that I have Nooelec Flamingo filters and that I was, and still am, happy with them. I have both the AM and FM in series with the input to the SDR.

I have also seen it on the MARS data channels. Unfortunately the one time when I saw it I wasn't ready to screen grab it. It caught me by surprise. I think it was either on one of the Air Force (AA) or SHARES net.

01:02 UTC - Very weak and unreadable. I can here some music in the background.
