HF Beacons / Re: D 13820 kHz CW 2156 UTC 29 JUL 2021
« on: July 29, 2021, 2238 UTC »
22:15 UTC - This one is interesting. It is alternating between LSB then USB for 3 x 23 ~ 28 second segments then pauses for 23 ~ 28 seconds before repeating. The duration of the segments and pauses are inconsistent but predictable.
22:40 UTC - The signal has gone off the air.

Good signal into my location. Peaking around -108 dBm (S4 ~ S5). The signal does get clobbered on occasion by a wideband UTE.

Equipment / Re: BELKA DX
« on: July 29, 2021, 1914 UTC »
I have had my Belka mobile driving around in the Jeep and plugged into the sound system. It definitely requires an external antenna. I do not believe that it would need anything special for an antenna. Any unloaded (no coils etc ...) mag mount should work well. I have also used my Belka with a rubber ducky without issue.

Yes, a good mystery. I'm hoping people will get interested in the thread and at some point maybe get some additional contributions and answers.

P.S. If you highlight your URL link to the picture then click on the "picture frame" icon in the button bar it will insert your image into the post.

00:23 UTC - Weak but readable with fading, music, actual frequency  6924.970 kHz;
00:27 UTC - DJ speaking and gave out @protonmail.com address;
00:39 UTC - Something about "thank you for tuning in", fading in / out;
00:43 UTC - DJ speaking again, there is a decent AM carrier but lacks modulation, specially when the DJ is speaking;
00:49 UTC - "Time for some funny jokes";
00:51 UTC - Station ID: FOXY AM and e-mail address as foxyam@protonmail.com
00:55 UTC - Going into deep fade out;
01:18 UTC - SSTV;
01:22 UTC - Carrier dropped. End of broadcast.

I see that Bali_Frank previously gave a 21.45 off in his log entry. I did not want to start a new one in the event this is the same UNID.

I can believe there was a ton of stuff to be heard on this frequency during that period being that of a hot mic in the COMMCOM Op Centre. The Op Centre has remote links to various receive and transmit sites and one can only speculate that the console was somehow latched in the TX position. I enjoyed listening for 30 minutes but by virtue of professional courtesy I had to advise them of the issue. Left to be seen if anyone reaches back and says thank you. Radio silence (no pun intended) so far.

20:46 UTC 27 JULY 2021
This is a US Coast Guard frequency in North America and is shared with Australia and UK.

20:46 UTC - I am picking up something in the background and will need for conditions to improve;
20:47 UTC - Female voice being heard;
20:50 UTC - Male voice being heard;

Switched to the HFU's 120 ft T2FD KiwiSDR, signal good and strong. Appears to be a VHF and other HF radio link bridged to the frequency.
20:58 UTC - Break-in tone;
21:00 UTC - COMMCOM with N16 status & position report;
21:06 UTC - UNID to COMMCOM for radio check;
21:07 UTC - Telephone conversation heard;
20:08 UTC - 2703: Outbound to Oakland, COMMCOM: secure your guard;
21:08 UTC - 2011: requesting to secure guard;
21:11 UTC - Telephone ringing heard;
21:21 UTC - N15 calling COMMCOM;
21:22 UTC - ALE being relayed;
21:30 UTC - COMMCOM Operations Centre notified;
21:58 UTC - Relay of audio appears to have ceased with only a carrier and humming noise left.

Utility / Re: DDH8 14467.3 kHz FSK

Good point Thomas. As experienced users we would know to shift the recieved frequency away from the centre frequency in order to produce the correct mark and space tones.

Equipment / Re: Construction of Shortwave beacon
« on: July 26, 2021, 1354 UTC »
Keeping the power supply simple was a wise decision, the DC-DC converter and associated charging circuit being too complex. As for the EEPROM, I would conciser using FLASH memory instead, I.E. similar to a USB stick. Those small FLASH cards used in cell phones would fit in the enclosure really nice. EEPROMs take far more current to erase and write to and access times are slow. Nice project, it is coming along well.

01:38 UTC - Weak but readable. USB 2.8 kHz wide;
01:40 UTC - Queen;
01:41 UTC - Abruptly went off the air and returned +/- 30 seconds later.

01:22 UTC - Station ID: Radio 48. Nice clear signal into my location, "cranking it out";
01:25 UTC - Station ID followed by some "madness mix";
01:46 UTC - Station ID.
