General Radio Discussion / Re: New (?) Shortwave Database
« on: May 19, 2023, 0105 UTC »
Here are some links to the stations, including my old time acquaintance Harold Sellers from our days past at the Ontario DX Association (ODXA). Harold now lives in BC and I moved 800 km North of Toronto in June 2022.

If memory serves me correctly, CFVP was off the air for a very long period until Bell Canada technicians finally repaired the transmitter in late 2022.

Cool pictures. The CFVP transmitter was fixed a few years ago, not last year.

I don't really consider CFRX and CFVP shortwave stations in the traditional sense. They are merely relay stations of their AM radio counterpart. There is no "shortwave" programming. If you ask me, the biggest mistake ever made was to close down Radio Canada International (RCI).

They are more similar to the old Tropical Band stations on 60 and 90 meters. Their programming is a simulcast of their AM station and they aren’t really interested in an international audience.

Thanks,

I had a quick look at it and the databases (EiBi and AOKI) seem to incorporate more than just broadcast stations. I picked Canada as a target country and got a listing of well known commercial and UTE stations. Other than CFRX 6070 Canada no longer operates any HF broadcast facilities therefor the list of additional non-broadcast stations will be very handy. I have used the EiBi database in Excel format and memory panel in SDRuno for years but the web interface is much easier and faster to use.

CFRX Toronto and CFVP Calgary are both still active. CFVP is a rare catch outside of Western Canada because of Radio Marti on the same frequency.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: CFVP Calgary
« on: May 18, 2023, 0502 UTC »
I can copy this station okay during the winter daylight hours, but its difficult during the summer because of Radio Marti signing on at 0000 UTC and staying on through the night. Usually I copy the 1060 AM 50 kW transmitter much better.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Another Rogue RHC broadcast
« on: May 17, 2023, 0322 UTC »
This frequency has been in use since  the start of A23, most of the shortwave schedules online are not very accurate. Only good one I have found are the British DX Club articles.

Interesting, the op posted on the discord chat last night saying he was off air and will be for a while. Nothing heard on SDRs right now. Maybe something from Asia?

If you mean the evening of the 15th (early 16th UTC), keep in mind my post is a day late so maybe I caught the last. And it was broad daylight, so it couldn't be from far away.

Okay, makes sense now.

Tuned in with the trusty old Satellit 750 and G5RV last night - I was having internet issues and could log in to post in real time, but I did tune in at 0332 UTC to a decent SIO 333 signal of jazz (sounded like a four or five piece combo featuring a solo trumpet prominently), with a voice which was unintelligible at 0338z just when it went QRT - likely station ID. Thanks for the show.

That was The Miles Davis Quintet, last song of the show. I'm still knocked out by the signal and the audio he was getting out of that transmitter. That SDR was just ahead of the greyline, which helped the signal, but that doesn't explain the high quality audio. Bud must be tinkering with that transmitter?

He has always had excellent audio, you just need a very strong signal to hear the full bandwidth (most people in the east do not get it that strong). The signal strength of his broadcasts is always impressive, I get the feeling he runs a bit more than the claimed 10 watts...

On 15 May around 1545 UTC this was coming in fairly well here in Denver. I was experiencing a power outage and took advantage by getting out my Satellit 750 and plugging it into the G5RV to see what was copyable, and this was good enough for me to Shazam "Happy Nation" by Ace of Base (sounded like a surprisingly heavy tune - not heavy like metal, but much more serious sounding than their ginormous hit "The Sign" - first time hearing it). Rx eventually degraded but it was quite good at that moment.

Interesting, the op posted on the discord chat last night saying he was off air and will be for a while. Nothing heard on SDRs right now. Maybe something from Asia?
