This was my mainstay during outdoor shows last summer.  I'm sure this is not an original creation, but I like it.

While still at home the night before contemplating a show...

Create the marinade in a medium bowl;
1/2 cup orange juice
3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped (I use a small hand chopper, keeps the smell out of your hands)
~2 tablespoons olive oil
salt & pepper to taste
You could also add some mushrooms and onions, chopped if your like, but may be better added at the grilling stage.

Mix the above ingredients in the bowl, then add the chicken and coat.  Add the contents, chicken and all, to a gallon size plastic bag and allow to sit overnight in the fridge.  The next day, throw in your cooler along with some corn on the cob, still in the husk.  Make sure the corn stays submerged in water for at least an hour before grilling.

Set up your gear, grab a beer, and warm up the grill.

Make a small makeshift pan out of some aluminum foil.  Pour the contents of the bag, marinade and all, into the pan.  Place the corn on the remaining space on the grill.  Arrange the breasts in a single layer, and cook until the internal temp has reached 165 degrees, or until no longer pink on the inside if your forgot the thermometer like I usually do.  Meanwhile, turn the corn every five minutes or so until the outer husks turn dark brown for about 20-30 minutes.  When the chicken is done, pull it off the heat and leave on a plate covered in foil if the corn is not quite ready.  Husk the corn, slother in butter and salt, and eat up.

Enjoy the sunset, and flip the switch ;)

Broadcast Announcements / X-FM Summer outlook
« on: May 26, 2017, 2033 UTC »
Its been 6 months since our last full fledged show, and I have to say I've got the itch pretty bad.  Our last test on 4085 was successful enough to consider adding to the future arsenal and a transmitter is currently being built for that band.  Two other transmitters are also being considered for 175 and 43 meters to replace the rather bulky and very inefficient current stereo transmitter for 43 meters.  There is a lot of technology in the new rig, and will make our field operations much easier than in the past.  The listener will benefit from better signal and higher audio quality.  We will benefit from battery operation which will make operation possible in places previously unavailable to us due to noise restrictions.

Its taken 3 years, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I have a pile of QSL's to do as well before things really begin to ramp up again too.  Expect testing under various aliases, some relays, and other transmissions in the coming months.  I hope to have regular shows running again closer to August, but maybe sooner or later depending on work load, available fundage, and weather.

All the best folks,

This is fascinating to me.  Running time is just over an hour.  It advocates open source as a solution to the crippling intellectual property systems that stand in the way of innovation.

Got some dance thumpage about S9 here.  Carrier about 75 Hz low FWIW.  Getting some peskie action on LSB.

2350z  Audio suddenly quit, then the song restarted.  Music is somewhere along the lines of ambient house (Runway music).
2351 A familiar voice, then station went QRT...then came back.  OM sounds like Liquid Radio....?
0101z Prodigy 'Smack My Bitch Up'
0137z Getting some deep fades, still there though.
~0145z QRT.

Thanks for the show!

A little over S9, strong, audio overdriven.  Running some sort of a mashup between 'Honkeytonk Women' and 'Mama Told Me Not To Come'
0606z Twilight Zone theme music.
0607z More music mashups, Steppenwolf's 'Magic Carpet Ride' and another classic rock tune with ride in the lyrics somewhere.
0611z A little Stevie Wonder into the same 'let it ride' track (Bachman Turner Overdrive).
0614z David Bowie 'Lets Dance' (audio pretty thin, not much below 400 Hz).
0617z Twilight zone theme again.
0618z Steve Miller Band 'Jet Airliner'
0620z 'Abracadabra'
0628z Off, then back on with CoolAM style ID 'Captain Morgan Shortwave'
0630z Santana feat. Michelle Branch 'The Game Of Love'
0633z ID, and signoff

Carrier about 6949.583 KHz Here, but its been a while since I've cal'd the RX.

Thanks for the show.

Hmmm...spellcheck anyone?

General Radio Discussion / X-FM 2015 Select Hits Disc
« on: December 14, 2016, 0936 UTC »
These will be mailing in a few weeks with our QSL's for the 2015 music recap show that aired on 1-2-2016.  For those of you that want to burn your own, enclosed is a cue file with track splits and cd text info.  This was mastered and burned with k3b/Brasero and found to work perfectly.  Nero should work as well.

Enjoy!

General Radio Discussion / LED bulb teardowns
« on: December 09, 2016, 0109 UTC »
Always neat to see the inner workings of stuff.  There are some guys on the internet that do just this, buy it, then take it apart and see how it works.

Several years ago I had the idea to build a small stereo HF receiver based around some then available parts.  I was working on the design for this a week or so ago and when I went to my part vendors, I noticed that most of the 455 KHz IF filters made by Murata and others have been either slated for, or outright discontinued.  Whatever vendor stock is out there appears to be all that will ever be, as even a sweep through ebay reveals very little in the way of options.

What is an RF hobbyist to do?  The world has gone to DSP, and most of the development kits for these thing exceed the mean income of most of the residents of Detroit (Sorry, had to do it).  Nevermind that most of these solutions draw too much power for battery applications.

Anyone have any leads on these things?

I found this ages ago when researching what others were doing in the realm of class D on HF.  A google search for '75 meter am transmitter paper pdf' will get you the original from the AM Phone message board.

This has some neat practical information for those of you who want to experiment with high power levels and high level modulation.  His prototype will make 1500W PEP on 75 or 160 Meters (3.8 and 1.8 MHz respectively) at over 90% efficiency.  It also covers some of the pitfalls of this method.

This is not a call to action, but some practical info from someone who has done it.  With the drive system and fets in use, I doubt this would survive an excursion to 43 meters, but the same principles apply.

Noticed this on the fish finder while listening to Wolverine. A touch over S9 on peaks, good 3 KHz modulation.

0123z Led Zeppelins 'Ramble On'
0125 pause between cuts, some audible (and visible) 60Hz hum and harmonics of such.
0126z LZ 'Whole Lotta Love'
0132z LZ 'Kasmir' occasionally slamming to S9+10dB
0139z presumed CW ID over song. 0140z CW in the clear.
0142z Appears to have gone QRT, although I still see hum modulation.  Might be time to check the house for new noise sources.

Thanks for the show!

General Radio Discussion / SWPC appears to be down
« on: March 12, 2016, 1118 UTC »
I noticed the Ionograms on the propagation page didn't work, and none of the others on the web seem to work either.

I wonder what our tax dollars broke this time?

The RF Workbench / RF lowpass filters and inductor orientation
« on: February 21, 2016, 2002 UTC »
I've been playing with filter design lately in the process of making PCB's for a few prototype transmitters and the old debate is raging.  This is what I found.

Among hams there is a notion that toroids are self-shielding, that is the magnetic flux of the winding is contained to within the core and thus very little outside influence can be expected.  With air-wound inductors, this is not true, and every pole in a filter is usually designed and build with adjacent coils at right angles to each other.

This lack of interaction in toroids is somewhat true I found, but measurable interaction does occur.

I built a 7 element MW lowpass filter of shunt type Chebyshev design with 0.1dB ripple and a cutoff frequency of 1.9 MHz.  In this design, all inductors were built  broadside to each other to save space, cores were T200-2 spaced about 0.6"

Anticipated rejection (Fc = 1720 KHz)
Fc -0.5dB
2Fc -50dB
3Fc -76dB

Measured rejection
Fc -1.9dB
2Fc -51dB
3Fc -77dB

I then changed the winding direction of the middle inductor and measured again.

Measured rejection
Fc -0.26
2Fc -51
3Fc -76

I found it interesting that the rejection of the harmonics was little affected, but reversing the winding direction had a large effect on the passband loss.  With the inductors wound the same way,  passband power loss was around 35%, meaning 100W in, 65W out!  With the inductor wound the other way, losses were reduced to just 6%.

All measurements were done with a HP signal generator and spectrum analyzer.  First, reference measurements were made with the generator set at 10dBm on each frequency, then the filter measured, and the loss calculated.
