The RF Workbench / Studio gear used for X-FM's 2015 Halloween show
« on: January 13, 2016, 0048 UTC »
I won't publicly post pictures of transmitter gear, but studio stuff is usually innocent enough.  So with that a snap of the gear used last Halloween while the show was in progress.

General Radio Discussion / Aircheck hosting...anyone have any ideas?
« on: January 08, 2016, 1027 UTC »
I got the website fired up again thinking I would put some airchecks up there for people to download.  Turns out there is a limitation on file size, even though the hosting is unlimited bandwidth.

Someone mentioned using torrents for distribution, but then you need a seedbox somewhere which is more money (this thing doesn't create income, BTW).

I really don't want to run a webserver at the house for obvious reasons, but does anyone else have any suggestions.  Free is always nice, but I live in the real world too ;)

After reviewing some off-air recordings, as well as some verified info off the web, one of the shortcomings of SoDiRA is becoming more apparent.  The problem manifests itself in hardware decoders as well, its called 'platform motion'.  Its caused by selective fading altering the phase and amplitude relationships of the composite c-quam waveform.  A clever work-around is to decode the c-quam waveform as QUAM instead, which does away with the cosine correction, and thus greatly reduce platform motion.

So, who knows how to write code for this, because I sure don't.  I'm a hardware guy after all :)

It might also be neat to add ISB decode as well, seeing as there is currently no way in software to do this.

Thanks All,

Some eerie sounds, some haunted graveyard thing perhaps?  About S9 here.

Thanks!

Must have been a test, very nice here, about 10dB over S9 with Alice in Chains' "Man In The Box".  Music abruptly stopped at 409z, then carrier off a few seconds later.

0415z Back on with some Rob Zombie, audio a little weaker than before.  What sounded like an ID @ 417z, sadly had the radio turned down.
0420z new track playing, a horsesh*t and gunsmoke kinda western tune, possibly "Ghost Riders in the Sky" which Ironically is playing on 6950.375KHz USB as I type this @ 435z.  Carrier again off after song abruptly ends @ 421z

Thanks for the test!

Equipment / Radios for 1720 KHz
« on: February 14, 2015, 1944 UTC »
Just curious if anyone has any production receivers that can go to 1720 or better.  I have a Sony SRF-59 AM/FM walkman that goes at least to 1750 KHz, and you can pick them up online for under $20.  MW DX people like them for "ultralight" DX, and I would get a real kick out of someone listening to us with one in the future.  Sadly, my Ratshack TMS-152 C-QUAM receiver was never expanded band, but I'm sure it could be pushed up there, and my Carver's  all stop at 1710.

Any other RX's come to mind?

We are currently testing a new antenna system for medium wave.  This is running at quite low power, so it should be challenge to hear.
Please let me know what your receive level is, this will serve as a benchmark for later tests.

I am looking forward to your reports!

General Radio Discussion / Artem's World Music Show?
« on: August 26, 2014, 0052 UTC »
I like listening to this show, but can't seem to find them anymore.  Anyone know if He's still doing them, and if so, where to get them?

Thanks,

General Radio Discussion / X-FM's history now has a wiki page
« on: August 08, 2014, 2304 UTC »
For those that are curious about our origins, check out the wiki page http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/X-FM  I've been meaning to do this for some time, and just recently got around to typing it up.

Software / ZARA Radio on windows 7 or WINE
« on: July 21, 2014, 0933 UTC »
My old air computer is still running XP for one reason only; ZARA will not run on windoze 7.  Has anyone tried it under WINE, or know of a version out there that does run on 7/8/et al?  I would like to move away from the technicolor mafia all together and go linux.

I like the idea of rivendell, but for a request based program this is totally inappropriate, as each cut has to be imported one at a time into it's SQL based library.  That's kindof hard to do on the fly, and a large chunk of the library is scattered across multiple HDD's.

Thanks for the help,

Sad times, "long distance dedication" won't seem the same now.

FM DX Loggings / Night time ducting strong the last few nights
« on: June 06, 2014, 2202 UTC »
I looked at the realtime VHF prop site and saw quite a few openings regionally across the US early in the morning.  Might want to check your radios in late evening or morning.  I've heard some semi-local enhancement, but nothing yet really enough to write home about.

General Radio Discussion / Dayton time is coming near...
« on: April 30, 2014, 0728 UTC »
Anyone going?  I've got my usual shopping list, and pretty much no funds, but it should be interesting none-the-less.  It might not live up to "Crapapocalypse 2012" but if your planning on going, post up!

We are testing a few antenna designs and welcome your reports tonight.  This is a technical program with no live production, but the usually music and liners.  Please let us know if you can hear us tonight despite the poor conditions.
