General Radio Discussion / Re: Little White Boxes

Bluetooth does come in handy.  Have you ever tried to hold a phone and change a tube in a 35KW FM at the same time?  Not fun.  My main problem with them is I always loose them.  I've had 3 motorola ear-things over the years, and I've lost them all.  I refuse to buy another one.  The phone can wait until I'm done.

I'm getting so curmudgeon-y in my old age.  I don't like phones in general anymore, as they always seem to be attached to some dumbass doing something stupid in traffic.

I wouldn't mind a 60mph speed limiter on cars in order to conserve fuel.

I like the idea of "drive as fast as you can afford."  If people want to drive stupidly fast and they can afford it, more power to them.  This country used to be full of freedoms, relying not on the law, but the common sense of the individual.  Apparently, common sense isn't very common anymore.

PS, noting as how much of the auto industry in this country is a branch of the federal government, does it surprise you that the brakes have lag, the performance sucks, and the things don't last 10 years?  I doesn't surprise me :)

I would guess your in the minority here...

I had a chance to listen to the show the other day.  Cool music, keep it up!

RE: Aussie Rules: saw that on cable TV a long time ago. Fascinating, fast paced game. I'm surprised it isn't followed more over here in the U.S.

Probably because its not easy to catch on TV.  They usually run the games live around 3:00 AM or so, and to watch you need to buy the soccer package through your cable or satellite company, which is in itself $20 a month.

By comparison, its much easier to catch live motoGP ;)

I find Rugby and Australian Rules Football more my cup of tea.  Its kinda like soccer....with horsepower.  And yeah, they tackle the sh*t out of each other.

I guess I'm just getting cynical in my old age, but the more I hear about any form of digital broadcasting, the more I cringe.  I think analog broadcasting is going to be with us for a very long time yet.  I hope.

Thanks for sharing that Nella.  Good read :)  Lots of truth too, even today.

I like the idea, and bonus points for promoting c-quam, but a lot of uncertainty remains...

-How is EAS/CAP liability going to be handled?  Even LPFM groups are required to have a compliant decoder.
-What sort of limitations on antenna efficiency will be required?
-What sort of limitation/requirements on indicating instruments will be specified?
-Will only type accepted transmitters be permitted?  Will home built transmitters and antennas be allowed?
-Like noncom outlets, will stations be allowed to operate less than full time?

I've dealt with FCC rules and regs in the commercial world for decades, and I know how slow the fed moves.  I really don't think this has a snowball's chance of going anywhere, but I'd be glad to sign.

Yeah, unfortunately squelch tail has been with us a long time.  In the interest of being a pest, real radios like Motorola, GE, et all, support something called reverse PL.  When the person transmitting releases PTT, the radio reverses or shifts the phase of the PL tone, which tells the radio to close its squelch.  Its been around for a very long time, yet to my knowledge, none of the ham rigs out there have it, which I think is stupid.

Huh? / Re: TV Antenna?
« on: June 17, 2014, 1203 UTC »
As the old saying goes, "There's not substitute for metal in the sky."  If all your stations are from the same direction, a UHF corner reflector usually will work well.  I have seen a resurgence of bowtie panel reflector antennas as of late too.  If your within 30-40 miles of the transmitters, go with the panel antenna.  if your farther out, use the corner reflector.

Also, avoid active antennas.  The preamps they put in those things are very poor and noisy.

Sad times, "long distance dedication" won't seem the same now.

Glad I'm not the only night owl on here!

Hmmm, I can hear it now, "Pirate Fridays"  6PM EST to 9 PM EST.  Coughing up 600-ish bucks a month to keep a weekly pirate-ish show on the air.  Makes me wonder what I spend on gas to keep the genset going.  I bet it's a lot less that 60 bucks an hour.

Interesting idea, I've also toyed with the idea of buying satellite time from a teleport.  Have someone else do the hard work of setting up the TX and antenna, and being eaten alive by bugs, I'll stay at home and play radio, and make sure the neighbors FTA doesn't work :)

Chanter, your not the only one who doesn't like the "howling" of religious radio.  I spent enough time as a kid hating myself because of the church.  I soon after learned the "one size fits all" box of religion doesn't fit all.
