The heavier the better seems to be the main rule when it comes to wall warts.  Cell phone chargers are pretty bad too.

The RF Workbench / Re: which type of crystal
« on: March 09, 2014, 0544 UTC »
If the crystal is running hot, it means your drive level is, well, excessive.  You could also have some DC present that shouldn't be there.  You can order crystals in different packages, HC-49 and HC-6 are the most common.

Taking a look at the circuit, it appears this transmitter is a power oscillator coupled to an antenna.  The crystal is either not suited for this purpose (microprocessor crystals usually aren't happy in these kind of circuits) or you may have the coil the wrong way around, driving the crystal too hard.

Equipment / Re: Not enough space for a good antenna to listen...

Interesting bit, although the amplifier IC he is using is 50 ohm input, and most loop preamplifiers are HiZ input, as the loop in no way represents a 50 ohm source, except at higher frequencies.

I was arguing with a .9M portable dish trying to find some audio feeds and after having the receiver scan through the channels, I heard a familiar voice.  I caught "Pirating With Cumbre" with Chris Lobdell, talking about reports, then played a lengthy clip from Red Mercury Labs from last Thursday.  Lyngsat says the feeds are run by World Harvest Radio.  Cool find!  Show concluded at 1525z.

So, they ceased HF operations for budgetary reasons, but instead of letting it 'twist in the wind,' wasted no time in tearing it down, despite having no offers on the property.

Something doesn't smell right here.

I'm with everyone else.  I verify reports on remote receivers, but I appreciate being informed that it was received that way.  This is particularly true with European listeners listening to US pirates.

General Radio Discussion / Re: The FCC Wades Into the Newsroom
« on: February 21, 2014, 2113 UTC »
Yes, but "Der Spiegel" and "The Guardian" are not exactly within the reach of the FCC.  Seeing how net neutrality, along with rest of our constitution is being fed to the shreader, it may be harder to get the news we need to be informed citizens, but we'll get what we need.  One way or another.

OK, that makes sense.  I've heard other hosting companies refer to distributed hosting rather than 'cloud hosting.'  In all fairness though, especially when dealing with something as touchy as pirate radio, and the NSA being what they are, the USA is probably the last place I'd want to host a site.

...just my 2¢
