Equipment / Re: MLA-30 Loop antenna
« on: June 09, 2020, 0130 UTC »
I bought one of these myself to see what all the fuss is about.  I'm considering getting a second one to keep in the 'go kit'.  I found its performance on medium wave to be acceptable, and the noise is no worse than my existing Chi-town special.  That being said, local noise around here is about s7 and the loop seems similar.  I may build a bias injector for it and see if any difference in performance is observed.  With it I did see WWV on 15, 20, and 25 MHz come in on it the other night, something I've never seen before here with the tune loop.

I will drag it with to a quiet location sometime and see how it behaves in a quiet environment.

Many of the XTS series radios have what's known as tactical inhibit, a feature to destroy the encryption keys and other programmed data in the radio and prevent unwanted surveillance from a captured radio.  It can be defeated in the codeplug, i believe.

The recommendation against using PIN diodes has to do with their nonlinear nature and tendency to produce IMD.  This is one reason they are usually not used in pre-selector circuits, as in the presence of high RF fields can produce IMD products....but then again so can conventional diodes.

FWIW, I know of PLENTY of commercial products I would consider ticking timebombs....PTEK comes to mind ;D  Point is, even in the commercial world, there is good stuff, and junk.

Equipment / Re: Vertical antenna build questions
« on: June 05, 2020, 1727 UTC »
FWIW, all my transmit antennas use the same basic configuration, 8 radials.  I settled on 8 as any more add setup time and inconvenience, while offering no discernable performance improvements.  As part of the setup proceedure, a sweep of the antenna is made and the antenna adjusted as necessary.  There is a balun designs feedline choke at the feedpoint, nothing else.  Based on the theoretical feedpoint impedance of 36 ohms, this implies a ground loss somewhere in the region of 14 ohms.

This sweep is form the a previous show setup (05/10).

This one from a few weeks later, same antenna and locale.

The RF Workbench / Re: HF Beacon, design questions

Keep in mind, it snows up there right  ;D  You might get 2WH after a good storm comes through and leaves 2" on your panel.

50ppm is about normal for those parts over their entire temperature range.  Most low powers are quite off frequency anyway, using surplus crystals and the like.  For the ultimate in precision, you could always go GPS, or rubidium  8)

This came in today from Digikey. https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/0/CPPC1-HT7PP-ND  It appears they are EOL'ing their entire through-hole line.

Epson has a similar product that is still in production.  https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/0/SGR-8002DB-SHB-ND
As does ECS https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/ecs-inc/ECS-P145-BX/ECS-P145-BX-ND/965972

How about some Lana Del Ray 'Doin' Time' or A Prefect Circle 'Imagine'/"Judas'

Both excellent choices!  Also some Led Zeppelin coming up.

The RF Workbench / Re: Tried a 270-030 replacement
« on: May 30, 2020, 0434 UTC »
Are you trying to build one from scratch, or fixing a broken one?

If starting fresh, why not try one of the cheapo PWM amps off amazon.  MUCH better audio and lower distortion, less weight, and heat!  Only downside, 24V supply required for 15W out.

6960 KHz AM 0204z+ Ball smacker Radio.  Currently playing Bjork's 'Violently Happy'.  About S7 to +10dB.

Thanks for the show!

The RF Workbench / Re: QRP SSB transceiver kit

For the money and what it is, that's a nice little kit :)  I'm sure with a little work, you could probably get full band coverage, maybe more.

We got a new washer recently, nice ultra wide band ( all of MW and 1\2 of shortwave) signal from the motor inverter for about 100 ft. Washing during radio hours is forbidden.

That is one of the reasons I still wash and dry with my old clunkers.  An occasional wideband click beats a never-ending slew of noise from DC to daylight.  I also have a problem with washing clothes in a machine whose innerds look like a ceiling fan motor.

Not just beef, but pork processors are having labor problems as well.  Working in these places is pretty wretched.

General Radio Discussion / Re: End Of Show Songs?
« on: May 16, 2020, 0502 UTC »
I've used a bunch of songs over the years.  Some that come to mind...

VAST "We will meet again"
Incubus 'Aqueous Transmission'
Audio Adrenaline 'It's Over'

I've been using the untitled track from the end of Revis' album 'Places for Breathing' seemingly forever as a closing theme/bed.  Following that, the last song is kindof a sendoff.  Its usually picked more for mood than content.

You could use 'Happy Trails'...  Prof thought of ELO's "It's Over"
