Our own Kilokat7 has had good luck with the Dkaz Loop

It appears to be confirmed by the sheriff's office. https://twitter.com/NyeSheriff

Sad indeed, but that's what a life of heavy smoking can do to you.  Larry Lujack died at about the same age from Esophageal cancer.  No disrespect intended.  I always liked Art's voice, very soothing.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Confused about Modes
« on: April 07, 2018, 0110 UTC »
You could add one more field for modulation or encoding type.  Many of the data type modes are transmitted using SSB radios with the data modulated at the baseband level, kinda like composite stereo used for FM stations actually containing DSB-SC modulation at 38 KHz then modulated by FM.

Just a thought,

6930.00 KHz AM 0006z 3/31/2016 About S8 and change, good sounding AM just above the noise here.  Playing what sounds like classic rock/folk music.
0012z Sounds like an OM backselling music or introducing new song, perhaps an ID too.
0024z About S9 now, but still high noise.  Hearing a nice flute solo.
0028z The Prof says 'Wear it Well' Rod Stuart is what he's hearing.  Sync detector struggling to maintain lock now.
0038z I hear wooden block, it must be Southern Culture On The Skids, 'Banana Puddin''
0041z Interference from USB station on 6925.  Good thing the WinRadio can shut down LSB :)

Thanks for the show!

General Radio Discussion / Re: Well this is Troubling...

I'm not sure this has much chance of passing.  The bill is only really concerned with the top 5 radio markets for pirates, which have no room for anyone anyway.  They obviously don't see SW as a threat, but I could see some radio refugees spilling over into our neck of the woods for safety.  Something to keep an eye on....

$2M cap on fines?  They have hardly any luck collecting the $15K fines they issue now.  Just chest beating...

Yuck, I always hated riding on gravel roads, especially with a street bike.  I hope he pulls through!

Company says the move is a "responsible step" and will now "focus on supporting existing customers’ transmitters with our available components"

MASON, Ohio — GatesAir is suspending the sale of new AM transmitters.

Chief Product Officer Rich Redmond said: “Recent changes in the long-term availability of critical components from our suppliers, including several last-time buy notices, have caused us to take proactive steps to ensure we can meet our continued support obligation of our AM products,” he said.

“To safeguard our ability to offer an ample supply of spare components — and to secure the ongoing field support of our AM transmitters — GatesAir has taken the responsible step of suspending new AM transmitter sales, and will instead focus on supporting existing customers’ transmitters with our available components.”

He said warranty, field service, phone support, spare parts and repairs continue as normal for GatesAir AM products.

Flexiva AX, DX and 3DX transmitters all had a number of obsolete components that influenced the decision.

“GatesAir is currently in the advanced technology assessment phase for the development of an updated line of AM transmitters,” Redmond said.

The news has no impact on the FM line, anchored by its Flexiva FAX or FLX transmitter. For DAB Radio, GatesAir recently launched the Maxiva VAXTE platform and will be showing new power levels at the NAB Show, Redmond said.

Good point.  Texas must be running out of ferral hogs and good old Ted needs something to do.

If NASA considers them a threat, I would guess the USAF would be dispatched to blow them out of the sky.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Digital pirate tv transmitter
« on: March 10, 2018, 0719 UTC »
Any of the digital waveforms are very sensitive to distortion, and a highly linear amplifier would be needed to get the modulator output up to a useful level.  This is not a trivial task, and one of Dunnifer's wonders won't do it.

ATSC modulators are very expensive, but most cable ready tv's made now support QUAM modulation, which is cheaper and more readily available in the cable industry.

I had a similar conversation back in the analog days with one of my mentors.  He seemed to think that 10W peak visual would be enough to cover a good chunk of a small town.  The reason; rooftop antennas.  We also had a low power station in town run by some looney guy who later started the fox affiliate.  I think he was running a lowband channel 2 with about 30 watts near downtown.  His antenna was 4 scala crossed horizontal folded dipole arrays.  At a building half a mile away where I worked we could see it, a little snowy though.

As an aside, the DATV people are using DVB-T modulation and equipment is relatively cheap but not compatible with US TV's.

I'm getting tired of Firefox, it seems like they've lost their way.

Text only would be nice for some things, like news sites.

Thoughts?

That depends on how much money you want to make!

Very well, I was only considering the 20W and under crowd, hence small AM rigs.  Anything above that best done with purpose built stuff.  I suppose your could do the class d/e thing with a 4:1 output transformer and push pull, that would get you more power from low supply voltages.

Thank You!  :)
