General Radio Discussion / Re: Very sad news

Probably because someone is now in possession of his computer and is trying to sort out his affairs.  I'm sure Josh did not mean it to be an insult.  Calm down people, we all lost a dear friend and collegue.

May this be a call to action for a remembrance show.  If all my transmission gear wasn't torn apart for a rebuild, I'd do it.

I had the chance to talk with Rafman on the phone a couple times.  We talked for hours about all kinds of stuff.  What a guy.  You meet people in life that make you realize we're all kinda alike....Rafman was one of them.

I'll miss ya buddy.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Radio Survivor to hit up LPAM.
« on: August 08, 2017, 1306 UTC »
Its a nice idea, but getting LPFM into reality was a 20 year battle with a lot of small groups working behind the scenes to grease all the appropriate orifices of the leviathan that is the commission.  If it was to succeed, I suppose the commission could, in the interest of their AM revitalization policy, incentivize stations to go dark, particularly rimshots into large metros with complex DA's.  Once they have cleaned up the band, then and only then would it be possible to bring something like this to reality.

...And as usual, the places where the licenses would be needed most, in large cities with diverse populations, there would probably be next to no available frequencies...just like LPFM.

Some small modifications, or at least how I tried it;

1 Pkg containing 9 or so chicken thighs
1 8 oz pack of sliced mushrooms
4 medium sized garlic cloves
1 medium sized yellow onion
2 Tbsp butter (1 is probably enough)
2 14 oz cans of chicken broth (needed cause I have a big crock pot)
1/2 bottle (6 oz or so) of your favorite local bock/lager/etc.

In an electric skillet (my stove skillet is too small and my calrods have dead spots) melt the butter and raise the temp to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.  When all the butter has melted, place the chicken in and brown both sides, about 5-10 minutes depending on how brown you want it.  I did 4 or 5 pieces at a time.  Meanwhile, chop the onion and garlic and place in a bowl with the mushrooms and mix.

When the chicken has browned, remove with a large spoon or tongs and place in the bottom of a large crock pot (mine is 8 quart I think) then add the beer and broth.

Drain the majority of the grease from the skillet, and reduce the heat to around 250.  Add the bowl mixture, and some white wine to get things going.  Stir the contents and allow the mushrooms to soften, 3-5 minutes.  Dump this mixture on top of the chicken, and put the lid on the crock.  Set the crock to high for 45 minutes or so, then allow to cook on low for 8-12 hours.

I'll let you know how this turn out.

0303z 8-5-17 6995 KHz USB first noticed it on the waterfall, pretty strong, about S9 here with Judast Priest 'Breakin' the Law.  Something seems to be a bit overdriven, as some LSB buckshot is evident.  May want to back the power down a bit, especially that close to the 40M CW band.  Those guys get cranky.

KUNT ID @ 310z, mentions of 5 KW TX output. Into Ozzies 'Bark At The Moon'.

0328z ACDC 'Hells Bells' left channel only apparently, noticing RF clipping on kick drum on the front of the song.

0333z 'Pirate Dan' on the mic noting some problems with the audio processing station c/d (qrt).

Thanks for the show.  Your last break had a lot of distortion in it, and it looked like an RF problem to me, as there was a lot of splatter either side of your occupied bandwidth.  Back the power down 10% and most of that should go away.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Ionograms for Newbies
« on: August 05, 2017, 0247 UTC »
A single Ionogram from a site near you will only tell you about NVIS propagation, or propagation from your location, straight (or nearly so) up, and to a point a few hundred miles around you.  Propagation varies widely, and tools such as voacap can give you an idea of what to expect between two points, or the probability of reception from your point to the rest of the globe verses time and frequency.

Got it here too, pretty weak though.  I can pull the melody out, and maybe an occasional word, but that's it.

I youtubed '0238 - Here In Spirit Jim James per shazam' and that sounds like what I heard....Thanks Hellicaster and JoeFlips!
Some cool sounding alternative rock!

Unfortunately, lost to the noise about 300z and it never did recover.

Thanks for the show!

Huh? / Re: Papilio Polyxenes

While driving through South Dakota a few weeks back, I noted a LOT of butterflies, many appeared to be monarchs fluttering about the winds.  The downside, a lot of them wound up on the windshield :(  I don't recall seeing so many of them in the past.  Maybe its weather related, but they seemed to be endless for the better part of 200 miles.

The only reason IBOC still has a presence is because of HD translators.  Listenership may not have changed much over the last 25 years, but the market share keeps getting more fragmented.  My home market used to have about 12 stations when I was growing up.  Over the last ten years, that has doubled.  Have they brought in more staff to program all these stations?  Nope, more format lab stuff from Cincinatti running on a server in a closet somewhere.  I just don't see how there is enough money in the ratings book to justify putting these things on, when you can get the same content over the internet, and sometimes commercial free.

'Renting' my OS...no thanks.  I'm also not a fan of cloud storage, because ya know, sometimes it rains ;)

Doubt it.  IBOC has invested too much money in all the right pockets and still has yet to win over the public...why?  Maybe lousy content has something to do with it.  It's still just lipstick on a pig.

I dunno, maybe because people pay porn stars to take their clothes off.  Everyone else has to do it for free  ;D

A friend of mine always talked about their store in Ohio.  He said they kept all the good stuff on the second floor.  I remember flipping through their catalogs in his shack when I was about 13 or so and he was trying to get me into amateur radio.

I saw a lot of concerts that came through town in the early 2000's and earplugs as far as I was concerned were mandatory.  I do like to feel the kick drums, but the rest I can do without, particularly the three day noise hangover.  I saw one concert in about 1996 without plugs and my ears were ringing for a week afterwords.  I swore I would never do that again.

I usually wear plugs in the x-mobile and sometimes the car on long trips.  I feel less fatigued if I do.
