I think municipalities are running more on the cheap, thus the crummy maintainance.  The power company doesn't maintain their clearances very well either.  I spoke with one of their linemen, and he told me in the old days 30 years ago before everyone consolidated, they had a crew that did nothing but trim trees and another that maintained the line hardware.  He said those days are long gone.  It used to be they would be on call during weather events and the system was well enough behaved there was nothing to do but play cards.  Not anymore...

I helped a neighbor put up a Cree 50W LED yardlight.  It looks good, has no caps in it to fail, and has a lightning arrester built in.  Its warranty is 10 years, we'll see how long it lasts  :P

Seeing that he lives in region overrun by feral hogs, I'm getting tempted to stake him out on the ground with a nearby speaker blasting out the squeals of a sow in heat.

I think I saw Hunter S Thompson do this to Keith Richards once in an interview... Quite effective!

Now if someone in cali would just do some radio privateering, the folks out west would have stronger sigs. I note that at times west of Nebraska seems to be a radio hole of sorts for those to the east, I suppose it's the reverse for those west of Nebraska. Nebraska, much as I love it, is a hole.

As Guise Faux astutely noted several years ago, most HF pirate radio activity in the US occurs within 500 miles around Pittsburgh  ;D

Well that makes the field agents' job easy...

Well thank god, the beg-a-thon hadn't begun yet!

It happens, particularly if proper grounding techniques are not adhered to.  It doesn't take much of a strike to take out the front end on a microwave receiver, and that's probably what happened.

"If mushrooms are considered, they should be added. If they're not considered, they should be considered and then added."
Agreed!

"Have you tried leeks? They're great grilled or chopped up in a lot of things. I've made meatballs with them instead of onions and turned out great. May work out here with the chicken too."
I'll have to try this.  The Prof. gives them a thumbs up too.

"For marinades, I like to crush the garlic using a garlic press. It's easy, and exposes a lot more of the garlic juices and oils than does chopping."
I'll have to try this too.  Sounds a lot easier than peeling and squashing, then chopping...

A regional engineer for a company I worked for once was rumored to use the towers of a daytime AM he cared for on 160 meters after signoff.  That's about as good as it gets folks!

Unfortunately this is becoming more common.  In some cases a station, now with an FM translator, chooses to allow the AM facility to degrade, or run at reduced power for extended periods simply because there is no longer any incentive to maintain the AM plant.

Huh? / Re: Electronics Lab Fail

The sad thing is someone went to the trouble to layout a board and etch it.  Any design software worth its salt should have flagged all the design rule violations.  On the other hand, if you do them in MSpaint like I do, maybe not...

Everyone has their strong suite, and DSP is not one of mine.  I'm an analog guy that has a hard enough time writing stuff in C to make embedded stuff work.

More power to ya!

This was my mainstay during outdoor shows last summer.  I'm sure this is not an original creation, but I like it.

While still at home the night before contemplating a show...

Create the marinade in a medium bowl;
1/2 cup orange juice
3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped (I use a small hand chopper, keeps the smell out of your hands)
~2 tablespoons olive oil
salt & pepper to taste
You could also add some mushrooms and onions, chopped if your like, but may be better added at the grilling stage.

Mix the above ingredients in the bowl, then add the chicken and coat.  Add the contents, chicken and all, to a gallon size plastic bag and allow to sit overnight in the fridge.  The next day, throw in your cooler along with some corn on the cob, still in the husk.  Make sure the corn stays submerged in water for at least an hour before grilling.

Set up your gear, grab a beer, and warm up the grill.

Make a small makeshift pan out of some aluminum foil.  Pour the contents of the bag, marinade and all, into the pan.  Place the corn on the remaining space on the grill.  Arrange the breasts in a single layer, and cook until the internal temp has reached 165 degrees, or until no longer pink on the inside if your forgot the thermometer like I usually do.  Meanwhile, turn the corn every five minutes or so until the outer husks turn dark brown for about 20-30 minutes.  When the chicken is done, pull it off the heat and leave on a plate covered in foil if the corn is not quite ready.  Husk the corn, slother in butter and salt, and eat up.

Enjoy the sunset, and flip the switch ;)
