Equipment / Re: MLA-30 Mod Step 1: Complete...NOT SO FAST :(
« on: January 26, 2022, 2013 UTC »
I did the F connector mod to mine some time ago.  I also built a bias tee for it, running off a switch mode wall wart power supply.  With the suburban noise, and the inherent noise in the loop preamp, I noticed no difference in performance between the switching supply and batteries.

+1 on the HF Discovery.  Its my main SDR now, and follows me everywhere I go, along with a chinese DSP portable.

Nice signal on one of the HFU Kiwi's today.  It was nice talking with you!
2235 Weezer "My Name Is Jonas" (Requested Music)
2239 DJD on the mic, music backsell, comments on confusion about the Black Angels and the Black Crows.  S9 or better on Chris's 250 footer.

Thanks for the show!

73 meters would be a much better choice this time of the night.  With the proliferation of cheap DDS kits on ebay, ditch the rocks.  Much better frequency stability and infinite frequency choices.

BTW if this is to turn into a technical discussion, it should probably be moved to the workbench forum.

Equipment / Re: 4:1 or 1:1 ? Neither?
« on: January 11, 2022, 0002 UTC »
4:1 is usually only used on a folded dipole, or any antenna with a higher feedpoint impedance.  A 1:1 balun should be used on your garden variety dipole.

As others have stated, it depends on where you are and who you are trying to reach.  You can use the VOA propagation tool to get an idea of where you can be heard with different power levels, antennas, and time of day, frequency, etc.   https://www.voacap.com/hf/ This is what I use to test various 'what if' questions.  Just remember, power stated is in PEP, not carrier.

Could be an intermod product.  Do you hear it during the day as well?

Things have been going downhill lately with regard to the kiwis.  Lately I've seen the wspr daemon running up all the available slots on a few of my favorite sdr's.

Funny you should mention this, as I drove by that site last week.  I was in the area for work of course ::)  According to their website, they just bought a new Ampegon transmitter and are in the process of installing it.

The world went SMD in the 80's.  It's really not that bad once you have decent tools.  All my new projects are smd.

I have a keyboard that does that.  Only happens on 73 meters for some reason...  ::)
