Spy Numbers / HM01 13-Apr-2018 and DIGTRX Issue
« on: April 13, 2018, 2256 UTC »
13-Apr-2018 2155UTC 10715 kHz KiwiSDR, Kansas, USA

DIGTRX crashed twice at the beginning but then ran smoothly until my browser froze at approx 2210UTC. I happened to open the program folder while it was decoding and noticed that it was overwriting the currently saved decoded file even if it was a different file name. This included both .txt and .f1x files. I finally started dragging the file to my desktop to save them. I only managed to save six.

Has anyone had this situation? Any known fix? In the setup > Options, the "overwrite repeated Rx file" is unchecked.

Thanks,

K5KNT

HF Mystery Signals / How does one Identify a Mystery Signal?
« on: April 09, 2018, 1300 UTC »
What should one do to attempt to identify a mystery signal before posting to this forum? For sake of this discussion, let's assume the following:

  • The computer is running Windows 10.
  • He/she is a beginner in the hobby.
  • They only have access to on-line SDRs.
  • They are able to do screen recordings using OBS Studio.
  • They have Audacity and/or Adobe Audition CC audio editing software.
  • They have Adobe Premiere Pro CC video editing software.

I know that many of the on-line SDRs have labels to identify known signals, but how would you identify the signal if there is no label?

Is there any other software, free preferred, that is needed or would be very helpful? Assume that they don't want to spend a lot of money because they may not like the hobby.

What are the steps this person should take to identify this mystery signal?

Let's also assume that this signal will later be identified as a Link-11.

Would the process be the same of other types of signals?

Thanks,

Kent/K5KNT

General Radio Discussion / Confused about Modes
« on: April 06, 2018, 2143 UTC »
I'm confused about Modes as it would relate to logging a reception. I'm currently working on revising my spreadsheet in hopes of creating a database for logging my receptions.

While looking at the HFUnderground Wiki under "Signal_Identification#Mode" I see the common modes I'm use to (AM, FM, LSB, USB, CW)  along with "Non Communications Modes" like radars. Then under "DATA Signals"  there is a list of various modes like FSK, MFSK, etc.  This is where I'm getting confused. Looking at this video from Token's Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKlLW_J8kEU the signal is identified as "MIL STD 188-141 ALE" and "USB". How would I log this if I only have one column (or field) for "Mode". Is there an additional column or field name I should add and which mode would go into which field?

I hope my questions make sense.

Thanks,

Kent/K5KNT

A few questions regarding online SDRs and the Center Frequency:

Is knowing the center frequency necessary or important?

If so, is it possible to determine the center frequency?

If yes, how would this be accomplished?

Thanks,

Software / DIGTRX - No RX Signal
« on: March 21, 2018, 1455 UTC »
Following this thread: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,32986.msg123254.html#msg123254 I was able to get DIGTRX running on my Windows 10 computer. I'm monitoring using web-based SDRs, mostly from the KiwiSDR network (http://sdr.hu/).

My problem is I'm not receiving anything on DIGTRX. I'm guessing there is some setting I haven't configured correctly, but I'm at a loss as to what it might be. Hopefully, someone here will be able to help me out.

Thanks,

I saw this signal when I was recording HM01 at 1755 UTC I began recording it at 1817 UTC.  I had the software running in AM mode, but I have no idea if this was the correct mode or not. When I checked back later (around 1840 UTC) the signal was gone.

Recorded using a remote receiver in Idaho, USA

Heard using webSDR located in Enschede, Netherlands.

17/00 repeated for 3 minutes 45 seconds followed by "out". End of transmission.

Thanks to Ary-B for explaining what "oblique" means in another thread. I couldn't make out the word until I read that thread.

Software / Question for SdrDx Users
« on: December 10, 2016, 1831 UTC »
I'm using the Windows version, but I think this question isn't OS specific.

In the lower left corner is a window that after starting the software displays "AFEDRI-SDR Connected" - I'm using an AFEDRI SDR-Net. After selecting "Run" This windows displays "AFEDRI-SDR Running 120ppm MP=-4837".

Can someone explain what the "ppm" and "MP" mean and is there a certain value I should strive for?  The SDR is connected via ethernet.  I'm running Windows 10, if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

Software / Decoder Software for Windows 10 Suggestions?
« on: December 01, 2016, 0104 UTC »
I'm currently running SDR Console (v3) with an AFEDRI SDR-Net on Windows 10. I'm looking into decoding some digital stations and would like some recommendations on software. Since I'm just getting started in digital, I can't be more specific as to what I want to decode, so I guess I'm looking for something that would be kind of general purpose until I get a better idea of what I like and can receive with my current setup.

Thanks!

General Radio Discussion / Book - Signal Analysis for Radio Monitoring
« on: November 21, 2016, 1303 UTC »
Is anyone familiar with this book? The author is Roland Proesch. I'm thinking about getting it, but would be interested to know if others have it and their opinions.

Thanks.

Spy Numbers / HM01 20-Nov-2016
« on: November 20, 2016, 1926 UTC »
05:59:20 Recording catches the transmission in progress. I wasn't aware of the hh:57 start time, so I started my recording 40 seconds before the hour. A lot of noise and the transmission fades in and out. last heard at 06:05:10.

06:26:45 I had my recorder set to record for an hour, so I was able to catch this at the beginning. I completely lost the transmission at 06:27:30.

All times UTC.

Using my Afedri SDR-Net and SDR Console (v3).

General Radio Discussion / Morse Code Trainer
« on: December 26, 2015, 1502 UTC »
I have finally decided that I need to learn Morse code.

Any suggestions on a trainer/tutorial? Mac, Windows or online.

Thanks,

Kent
