General Radio Discussion / Recognize this noise?
« on: February 09, 2012, 0315 UTC »
I've had a fairly continuous noise that I've been hearing for several months now. It's broadbanded enough to be hear as low as 80m and as high as 20m. The signal strength can vary day by day and also by frequency, generally higher strength with higher frequency. It's continuous. I've not had a situation where I've been listening and its disappeared.

There are some power poles near me that have forever been on the repair schedule due to a noise complaint I provided to the power company a long while back. However, that noise source is very different sounding than this one. Itís much more of a classic 60 Hz buzz whereas this one is much more, err "bassy" sounding.

I've not been able to hear it in my car and I've not yet been out hunting with my R30CC in portable mode. I guess I keep hoping the power company will repair the poles and I kill two birds with one stone. Itís there when the radio is run on batteries, so Iím confident itís coming in on the external antenna.

I've recorded it and I wonder if any others have heard this and identified it? Joe Farley was nice enough to take a look at it on a scope and he commented that it definitely has 60 Hz content in it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Nice to hear Dr. Benway again on MW. A little stronger tonight, but still
fighting my static.

Benway's story telling interspersed with music makes for great pirate radio.
Sounds like a 2007 show being redone with a few live feeds.

off at 0233z - just caught the end....

A nice S8 signal with medium fade. Not sure if it's my end, but the audio level seems a bit low.
Multiple ID's since sign-on at 1932z.

2057z - end of show. Audio level sounded good at the end.

Happy New Year WFMT

A short show of ethereal music with a couple of ID's by the whispery voiced woman
whom I believe is saying Wolverine Radio. Off at 0200z. Nice signal. SINPO 44333

A very nice signal fighting a lot of noise here in Chicago.

2224z - ID
2225z - Mountain - Whole Lotta Shakin'.
2240z - more country rock - signal's still doing well.

Signal took a dive as of 2315z. Great show from what I heard JPS. Thanks.

XFM Shortwave, 6925.0am, 12-14-11, SINPO 15441
Fortunately, a pretty low noise floor is letting me hear a XFM broadcast.
ID at "just before 0500" came through pretty clear. Can make out some music
and the unmistakable XFM op.

0504z - Kenny Wayne Shepard - Blue on Black
Signal seems to be improving. Audio quality sounds quite nice.
0509z - Sheryl Crow - My Favorite Mistake (She'd be worth it)
0524z - ReFlex - Politics of Dancing.
0535z - Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You.
Much larger signal swings now. Peaks are S3 here to down below the noise floor.

Thanks XFM! Great to hear the first AM show.

Tuned in about 0136z to catch the end of Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down" at about S2.
Signal faded for a while, heard what sounded like a country song with a female singer about 0148z.
Nice signal upswing at 0156z for The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again".

0205z - "I'm the nurse who likes to fook" Ferris Buehler
0206z - TCS ID.

Given the frequency, I'm guessing this is NRS. Best signal I've ever had in Chicago for NRS if so. Usually just
a het with the occasional bit of music.

Not real strong into Chicago, but this appears to be the upper limit of my antenna tune.

1544z - Wild Thing
1554z - Boston - Don't Look Back
1555z - BHR ID
1557z - Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild
1600z - Spirit in the Sky

A fairly decent signal from RGG fighting the awful static for the last couple days.
Tuned in at 1345z. Super Chicken, James Brown?, Cars - Since You're Gone,
ID ("This has been Radio GaGa, pirate SW radio, thanks for tuning in") and off around 1352z.

Thanks for the show RGG.
