General Radio Discussion / Re: US CB to get FM
« on: July 25, 2021, 1524 UTC »
Many 11m "export" radios already support FM. ;) Wonder if there will be a "gentlemen's'" agreement on specific FM frequencies similar to 11m SSB.

Another low-VHF beacon of possible interest is WE9XFT/WG2XPN on the 4m band at 70.005MHz. FCC has renewed the permit multiple times, and Wiki suggests it is still active as of March 2021.

AFAIK, it is a 3KW directional from Virginia to Europe, but even few watts off the backside could be enough for NA reception if/when the band is open.

CCR at 2158z. Floating around S4. You are making the trip to Florida, and I can recover audio today.

Your low horizontal antenna is probably more NVIS, which should benefit daytime listeners within a few hundred miles versus your 1/4w vertical.  If possible, you might consider adding a reflector wire under your horizontal radiator to potentially enhance NVIS operation.

YMMV with a low horizontal wire at night, so you might need to experiment switching between the two antennas if trying for late night listeners.

Thanks for the broadcast! :)

Equipment / Re: Antennas for postage stamp size lots

Quickly skimmed the link. An active e-field antennas can work okay if you are not dealing with lots of local EFI/RFI and can accomplish RF grounding besides simply relying upon common-mode currents on the feedline as a counterpoise.

I have deployed two PA0NHC-style miniwhips at my QTH located on a quarter-acre lot in a neighborhood, though thankfully my noise levels are usually decent. Mine are RF grounded to their 10.5' masts, which each are sunk about 3' in the ground, plus chokes on the feedlines as they depart from the base of the masts.

Yeah, I caught that at short-wave.info, but I have seen 10KW mentioned elsewhere. IIRC, SWLing Post once mentioned a 10KW permit but probably operating at 1KW.

Either way, it seems to be decent signal most nights across the gulf for me.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: R. Habana Cuba on 10M
« on: July 20, 2021, 0324 UTC »
There is a chance it might have been a 10m jamming attempt. Cuba has been jamming 40m.

Updated. :)

Right there with ya' on mid- to upper-HF conditions on recent nights. European amateurs on 20m. Asian stations on the 16m band. 11m CB openings, too.

That said, I also still have lots of lower HF broadcast activity, but admittedly much of that is typical regional stuff for me anyway.

Classic music at 0436z. SINPO 55444. A little noisy tonight, but still a good copy.

Thinking of XEPPM-OC, does anyone know if the station actually runs 1KW or 10KW? There have been conflicting reports in recent years.

850
Wrapping up a music show at 056z. "Just A Friend" by Biz Markie. News at 0400z. SINPO 45545. Isolated slight fading, but otherwise an armchair copy.

851
Weak copy of Chinese language talk. More of "the usual" for China jamming of SOH broadcasts. SINPO 15531.

852
Music at 0343z. SINPO 35433. Intermittent deep fades, so not a great listen, but generally copyable.

853
Chinese language talk format with occasional music overlay. SINPO 25522.

I would like to say it is Radio Free Asia, but there is also intermittent distortion and other artifacts, so it is quite likely jamming by China and/or possibly a mix of both.

854
I used short-wave.info for the ID. ;)

The Columbian station on the frequency appears to have a 24/7 format, but I do not know its content format.

Radio San Antonio is apparently a religious broadcaster. I do not speak Spanish, but the station I monitored seemed to have that type of vibe IMO.

855
Talk and music mix. SINPO 15522. Not great, but there. Current measured noise floor on the frequency is around -140dBm.

Dropped to a carrier with intermittent modulation around 0320z.
