Would they now, if not move someplace far away, then at least play music or language lessons or DX programs or... something that isn't Brother Missingteeth screaming away?

How much money can that guy possibly have to throw away?  Jeez!

Tuned in at 0118Z to The Human League - yay!  Signal fair to good onto the isthmus with the aforementioned THL, Flock of Seagulls, 'Here In My Car', and at least one song I didn't recognize.  Donner Pass Diner spoof ad at around 0130Z, which made me say ewwwww! :P

Thanks for the show!

I cannot deny, I got a laugh out of this one. :)

I've only heard them clearly twice since I started listening to shortwave back in 2002.  Once was very early on when I didn't know what the heck I was doing, the other was more recent, and that was arguably iffy as I was suffering through some awful distortion to get copy.  Manageable, but not at all perfect.  Uf da!  I wonder just what it would take to fix that benighted setup of theirs?  I wish somebody would fly over there and give their engineers a hand, yeesh.  I sure couldn't do it, lack of money and major lack of engineering know-how.

That sounds like Dutch to me, though not sure if it's Netherlands Dutch or Flanders.  Think I caught a reference to fish in there; you may have picked up a couple Nederlander or Belgian fisherfolk.

I may have entirely missed this upthread, and if so my apologies, but has anybody got an e-mail address for Johnny Tobacco?  This is the clearest (and only the second!) reception of a Europirate I've ever had, and I'd love to confirm it.

I've been wondering what time/freq Turkey was using for English to NAm this season!  Thanks. :)

I caught the very end of this!  Old-fashioned bluegrass instrumental music at 2312Z April 9, while on a DXpedition south of the city.  Markokpik was there and heard it too, although I'll let him write his own log.  :)  Off at roughly 2314Z, no ID heard but we suspected this was Johnny Tobacco just by the music playing.  Signal fair, SINPO 43343.  Wow!

I must be thinking of a different signal.  Ooooops!

I literally squawked "What?  Really?!" in an empty apartment.  :D!  I am delighted!  I know these will be a darn difficult catch from NoAm, but it's worth trying in both cases!

I thought 8992 was commonly used by Andrews AFB?  I might be talking out of my beanie...

I do wonder about that 'has refused' phrasing.  Is that the restrictive governmental control situation I suspect it is?  :(  What a shame, for us as listeners, and for Belarus itself.

I still regret the iffy state of the reception report I sent to Radio Belarus; the log was questionable, and I knew it when I sent it.  They QSL'd it, and to this day I feel guilty...

That, my friend, is a whale of a story.  I know that's a cheap shot, but it was too sharding good an opportunity to pass up.  Ambergris indeed... :)

Shortwave Broadcast / radio Vaticana (Cantonese?) 1229Z 28-03-16
« on: March 28, 2016, 1356 UTC »
A day off work means morning DX!  Darn but I'm cold.  Next time I run outside with the portable, I'm taking a jacket.  ... Anyway!  Caught this as I was heading down the hill toward home, and wow!  I heard the shrill long tone while bouncing around the lower end of 31M and went... is this just interference, or is somebody going to sign on?  I waited about thirty seconds and ooooops!  Ni hao, Vatican Radio.  I might just have to QSL this one.  Here's my log as I wrote it down once I got back indoors.

9560, Radio Vaticana, 1229-1236.  Long shrill tone at 1229, to brief open carrier and into an orchestral version of the Vatican Radio interval signal.  Brief announcements in a female voice, then into programming of long talks and religious music, including one probable hymn.  Signal weaker but audible, SINPO 32233.

This did not, for the record, sound entirely like Mandarin.  HFCC says Chinese, and I'd hazard a guess at Cantonese from the tone; there are similarities between Cantonese and languages like Vietnamese or Khmer that Mandarin does not share.  Then again, it *was* a comparatively weak signal.

I've never heard an orchestral version of the Vatican Radio interval signal before!  Is that specific to their Asia-beamed services, does anyone know?

If any other Diane Duane fans are around, you'll get this.  Maybe it's a Twelvesong?  We could use one...
