General Radio Discussion / Re: Solar Minimum
« on: May 18, 2017, 0533 UTC »
Ugh!  I thought we were already *at* the darn solar minimum...  :(

KA1IIC, no offense to you, but I absolutely *loathe* that song, parody snippet or no parody snippet!  Gag!  It makes my ears revolt, or want to.

I have to admit, I get the chills every time I hear the Happy Station theme music, especially when, for a few seconds, it goes very serious... before switching to quirky and upbeat again.  See my signature for why.  :)

MW Loggings / Re: SS religious station on 990kHz=?

Ooh, so *that's* what's been going on!  I knew semi-auroral conditions were causing some unusual signals to reach the region, but this was the most distinct.  I'm calling it a probable ID.  Cheers, folks!

For the last few nights (roughly a week or so) I've been getting a Spanish-language religious broadcaster trading places with Winnipeg's CBC outlet on 990.  The content is most definitely Christian and fairly conservative, and the occasional music is similar to the sort of thing a VCY America station might play in English - choral, simple melodies, almost martial in tone in that way some fundamentalist stations can be.  I caught what might have been a prerecorded mailing address at one point, but the signal was too far down in the mud to make out details.  Also a possible 214 area code, though this could have theoretically been a country code.  Again, difficult copy.

Who have I got, does anybody know?  Are they here in the States, Mexican, or *fingers crossed* a visitor from further south?

ETA: Thanks for ID assistance, folks!  Auroral conditions are marvelous, eh?

I really wish I already had the portable rig I've been working on getting... I would be all over the sprintathon this weekend, goshdarnit!

KD9CZG, who really needs to work on her yellow maple leaf award...

MW Loggings / Re: CKWW AM 580
« on: April 09, 2017, 0723 UTC »
I can get CKWW here, but not often.  Guessing that's to do with relative proximity.  It's more common to hear Kansas City on 580, if anything.

Could this have been National Radio Rep. of Sahara i.e. Western Sahara?  I've heard of them somewhere around 6200-6300, but never caught them.  I wonder if they're active/active again?  Alternately, maybe Niger?

You caught the delightful newbie from Montreal! :)  I'm a fan of this one myself.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Program on 5130 AM 2304 UTC
« on: March 19, 2017, 0111 UTC »
This was European Music Radio (EMR) transmitting to North America via WBCQ.  You're lucky; I tried for this broadcast myself and got nothing beyond a carrier and some maaaaaybe audio way below a truly horrible noise floor.

I had this too, roughly 2335Z, but had an awful time trying to get the proper frequency.  Realized after a minute or two of struggle that the darn pescadors were causing half my problem.  They were well over top the music I was trying to tune.  Argh!

Make propagation great again?  *giggles*  More like make it grate again...  Drat that pesky wordplay. :)

I wonder if they realize they'll be thoroughly squashing CHU, as well as likely splattering onto South Africa and possibly an Indonesian and a Papua New Guinean or two, if they're on 3.3mHz? :(

2.7mHz is near Samoa's usual freq as well, isn't it?

MW Loggings / Re: WCBS 880
« on: February 15, 2017, 0415 UTC »
WCBS is usually quite loud here, with WABC only slightly weaker.  Often, though not always, Brandon, Manitoba is audible under WCBS, and occasionally above them.  Those nights are fun!  Once a couple years ago, I had Radio Progreso in the clear, with zero sign of New York.  I nearly fell over!

I am late late laaaaate responding to this, but I literally *just* spotted it.  Sorry about that!  As for this station, nope, I've never managed it.  Depending on the receiver I use, I get either a muddle of different stations or splash from a local on 1480 that I swear is cheating to a ridiculous degree...

Well darn.  I'm going to be at work during both outages, so no chance to try for Argentina, Venezuela, Spain, South Korea... crud.
