Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Zambia Natl BC Corp 6165AM *0240UTC 14Oct12

Nice catch.

All my time SWLing and DXing, I've never been able to hear Zambia or Zimbabwe  -- or South Africa's regional outlets, for that matter.

Wow.  What an amazing story.

People sometimes forget just how scary the Cold War era could be. Nowadays people worry that a big terrorist attack could take out a city, or maybe cripple an infrastructure.  Back then the fear was that the entire civilised world could be turned into one big radioactive ash pit, and that everyone would die.

I read in Khruschev's autobiography that the Soviets had to deal with Mao's cavalier attitudes about nukes as well.

Does KGO 810 San Francisco ever show up in the Midwest? Although their pattern favors N-S, they still run 50 kilowatts at night.

PS., an interesting fact about KGO -- they used to just make the night time ratings in Seattle and Portland.

Heard a relatively strong signal of Arabic chanting that sounded like the chanting of the Koran that one hears on the shortwaves periodically...  Acc. to the lists online, it was Algeria.  I couldn't get an ID as I don't understand Arabic... A man was talking around 0554, and the station was off the air by 0601, which matches the published online lists.

There was quite a bit of fading and higher noise on 41 meters than usual.

Mediocre conditions on 49 meters, and MW as well.....

I'll have to return to this frequency later on in the week during better conditions to get a more positive ID.  If it was Algeria, it would be my first logging of that country.

Also probably heard Tunisia on 41 meters, 7275 khz., 0541 UTC - 0601 UTC, with talk in what sounded Arabic, and Middle Eastern pop music with Middle Eastern / Arabic style singing and instrumentation.  Signal was strengthening by tuneout after 0600.

I've heard Tunisia before, they sometimes will mention "Tunis" during news announcements.  No positive ID of it this time, with the grainy conditions.

The AM radio 'cannon' of Juarez, Mexico booming in over everything else with some guy talking a long time about what sounded like talismans (?).  He mentioned something that connected with your family, your children, your woman, etc.  Was no mention of Dios, El Senor, Biblia, etc. so it wasn't apparently religion.

Mentioned a Casa Mercado in Juarez, Chihuahua, and an address and a phone number (starting with 656, the Juarez prefix).  I think it was a sort of informercial, but I'm not sure really for what.  The word 'talisman' was mentioned, but it may have a different meaning the way it was used, or I could have heard it wrong.

Heard some loud ranchero music on the frequency earlier on the same bearing, but hadn't tried to ID it until I tuned back to hear this guy talking away in Spanish, w/ slight reverb on the voice.

Very interesting program... haven't logged this station here in the PNW since the 1980's, although another guy in the area logged them a few weeks ago.

Roughly 1300 miles -- the ol' TRF was doing its job well.  I usually DX MW on my boombox but it wasn't handy.

Conditions are pretty strong towards the south tonight.

Other / WWVH pummeling WWV, 10000 khz., 0530-0600 UTC, 10/6
« on: October 06, 2012, 0611 UTC »
About half an hour ago, WWVH was covering WWV, something I've not heard before.  Usually WWVH is way in the background.  Around 0530 you could barely hear WWV's announcements.

WWVH is still in very strong, much stronger than usual, although WWV appears to be strengthening again... very odd.

Looking forward to seeing this new one.  The last two big ones (Hyakutake especially) were very cool to observe through binoculars.

Heard some interesting programming on this station... It was the first time I'd heard it in a long time.  I think I logged it once before a few years ago.

I tuned into it by chance (I don't listen to the 25 meter band that much), to hear some Iranian language announcers and a lot of interesting music that sounded somewhat like a cross between Greek and Russian pop.

It came in SIO354 on my Panasonic RF-B45, peaked at SIO455 around 1659 utc., and weakened thereafter.  I didn't hear any evidence of jamming, but I'm way off the side of the transmitter's beam, any jamming signals would have gone the other way.

Kilokat7's on a lot of the radio boards.  Has several beverages on ground, pretty good equipment. He also a website with a log / map somewhere.

I hear you on the 'riff raff' getting in the way of you hearing the coast; it also applies to those of us on the coast hearing the Midwest.  You've got to spend a lot of time on a channel to hear whatever snippets of info you can get to ID a Midwest station nowadays, much different than the 70's and even into the 80's.

I used to be able to log WOAI, WBAP, even WWL fairly 'regularly', i.e. when DX season was in, they generally would be audible a lot of evenings.  Now those frequencies are covered by 2-3 regionals.  Makes it more of a challenge, though.

I wonder if they use HF ?

Heard the beacon again this evening, a bit clearer but the QSB keeps me from getting the entire ID.  But it's making it to the NW.

Equipment / Re: What Radio Did you start your listening hobby with?
« on: October 03, 2012, 0758 UTC »
I started my SW DX hobby with an old Penney's AM-FM-SW portable radio which actually worked fairly well.  I'd hook the radio's external wire to the metal struts of my desk lamp, and receive HCJB, Radio RSA, Radio Moscow, VOA, BBC, R. Nederland, etc.

When I first heard Radio Australia early one morning (around 2 a.m.) I decided to put up my first wire antenna, and soon was able to regularly hear their Top 40 Countdown program on 5995 khz nightly.

I first heard AC/DC being played between news programs, way before any of their records were released here in the U.S.  I would also tune in VLW9 when it would come in -- it was the Perth SW relay for ABC outlet 6WF.  The evening guy on 6WF would play rock music from time to time, and give the beach reports for the Perth area.

Tuned into a USB pirate radio broadcast that was coming in at S7+ on my DX-398.

I heard IDs as "Cool AM Radio" and songs by CCR, David Bowie; a plug for Free Radio Forum @ 0225; a condom safety spot, and into a couple songs that sounded a bit 80's (OMD and somebody else after that... then Robert Palmer, and during re-check at 0248 they signed off.

Strong, clear signals overall.  I liked the 80's sounding songs especially.

I gave a listen for your beacon.

Heard the 'A0R' part of it, also the '/b' and what seemed to be a 'CO' there afterwards, but never could get a full ID.  Very weak, and there was a lot of fading.

I also had some local QRM, probably from a neighbor's TV, and a little bit from some RTTY a few khz lower in the band.  The signal came in well on my Panasonic RFB45 and random wire.

Seemed to disappear abruptly some time between 0141 and 0210 UTC this evening (Oct 1st).

Those are pretty cool.

All I hear in the outband, aside from a handful of good ol' boys here and there, is a lot of activity on the Latin American calling frequency on 27455, which usually is open if skip's in.  I think it replaced the upper side of 27295 for that purpose.
