Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Algerienne in English
« on: July 16, 2020, 1841 UTC »
Heard via Twente
13820kHz  at 18:31 utc with malfunctioning transmitter via Issoudun, FR
They do an occasional 5-15 minute English segment several times a week this hour only. Today it was 5 minutes long "Destination Algeria"
There is one transmitter at Issoudun that does a weird beepy, chirpy thing. It seems to ba a luck of the draw deal as to where the funky tx will turn up.

Shortwave Broadcast / LRA 36 test
« on: July 10, 2020, 1834 UTC »
LRA36 Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel in Argentine Antarctica is testing on Saturday July 11 from 14:00-15:00 utc on their regular frequency 15476 khz in USB. They usually broadcast in reduced carrier+ USB so I guess they will drop the carrier. The carrier is the only way I have ever been able to tell when they are on the air so it'll be interesting to see how this works.

Spy Numbers / XingXing guangbo diantai 1 (V13)
« on: July 10, 2020, 1819 UTC »
I've been spending alot of time lately on various Japanese remotes trying to copy JJY (I've always wanted to copy the English language news fax and have never been able to even come close from my QTH in Missouri)  while waiting I've stumbled across V13 a few times
I'm my local mornings:
July 9. 9276 KHz 12:01-12:26 under strong FEBC on 9275. Also on at:

12:30 - 12:55, actually starts a minute late and goes a minute long 12:31 - 12:56

13:00 - 13:26. I missed the start but the sign off was at 13:26 so sign on was likely 13:01

13:31 - 13:56

All on 9276 KHz H3E. With very strong FEBC all but obliterating the signal. During the occasional lulls in FEBC I could see some modulation on LSB. Not enough to be considered full AM but not fully suppressed either. Sometimes the carrier is dropped in the 5 minutes between broadcasts. This happened at 12:26 but didn't happen at 12:56. Carrier was dropped at 13:26 also. Not heard on usual parallel 7502 KHz.

Local evenings
UTC July 10.
00-30-01:00 18040 KHz (H3E) // 11430 KHz AM I missed the actual start (with the flutes) and the sign off so I'm not sure about the minute late start thing although that seems to be the pattern.
Rechecked at 01:11 and both frequencies were on again in the same modes.

2020-07-11 , 01:31z 13974kHz until 01:56z carrier off at 01:57z
2020-07-11 , 02:03z 9276kHz carrier but no modulation. carrier off at 02:56z
2020-07-11 , 03:01z 7502kHz until 3:26z carrier stays on
2020-07-11 , 03:31z 7502kHz until 3:56z carrier off at 03:57z

Amateur Radio / 13 colonies special event
« on: July 03, 2020, 0030 UTC »
I've been spending time on a kiwi in Sardinia lately , it has very low noise  and I've caught alot of Latin American DX around 1 to 3 utc. I was copying a strong cw signal on 20 meters and couldn't catch the ID properly (I thought) it seemed to be K2K. It turns out that is:

Shortwave Broadcast / R.Algerienne 13820KHz 18:13-1830 utc
« on: June 05, 2020, 1940 UTC »
I have heard that the R.Algerienne programs via Issoudun have been plagued by an odd pulsing beep on most but not all frequencies. As I was listening to the apparent self qrm beep on 13820 I noticed that the Arabic turned into English from 18:15-18:30. There was an OM talking about dinosaurs and then a short piece about an Algerian artist who paints roosters on furniture then back into Arabic and Quran stuff. Is English from Algeria a thing? hfcc EiBi and aoki list this hour as Arabic or Arabic/French  I have heard ToH IDs in English before but not actual programs.

General Radio Discussion / Reflected Tsunamis and Space Weather
« on: May 15, 2020, 1753 UTC »
I heard GH mention this on world of radio last week. I never knew that tsunamis and earthquakes had such an effect on the ionosphere, equivalent to strong X class flares.

Shortwave Broadcast / AWR Wavescan 9955 kHz 3:38-4:00 UTC 9/23/2014
« on: September 23, 2014, 2054 UTC »
Heard while playing with crappy little Tecsun PL360. Interviews from last months HFCC conference in Sofia. Occasional CubaRM that had long deep fades & then would come back pulsing until the WYFR signal was completely covered & then go down for 3 or 4 minutes.
