Shortwave Broadcast / voice of Russia not on 9665 3:00 utc 9/6/13
« on: September 06, 2013, 0338 UTC »
only Voz Missionarias on 9665 tonight & last night. I wonder if they are on a different freq or have they just given up on the western hemisphere in advance of quitting HF in Jan 2014.

Since posting this I have seen a thread in DXLD that the Moldova site has stopped all VOR broadcasts. VOR is still on other freqs & times but not very audible here in NA. It is the end of an era & I for one am bummed out.

Utility / 4XZ CW marker & traffic 6001 khz 8/28
« on: September 05, 2013, 0425 UTC »
I've been meaning to post this for a week now. 4XZ,  Israeli navy in Haifa was heard banging away in Radio Havana's side band a few times last week. I'm not sure but I think they have been there before. I can't find any mathematical solution to explain the signal so I am guessing it was real. They have turned op on 5000 khz in the past also. Since this is RHC we're talking about I at first assumed it was just another screw up from them but I recognized the ... VVV 4XZ 4XZ... even though I don't copy morse code because I've heard it so many times.

Shortwave Broadcast / Voice of Russia weird ID on 9665 3:09 UTC 9/4/13
« on: September 04, 2013, 0404 UTC »
I was listening to VOR on my ats909x (I have to either listen in USB or tune up to 9667 to avoid the het fro Voz Missionarias) & heard what seemed to be a MW ID at 3:09z  "...this is Radio VR  1430" the station seemed to be slightly different from what I normally hear on VOR. The male announcer sounded American to me. He was interviewing a guy from Israel about the possibility of taking back Obamas Nobel prize. He had to cut the guy off abruptly at 3:20 as they went into what sounded like more standard VOR programming for 2 minutes of news headlines & then back to the American sounding guy with more news. markets & weather from "world capitals" that included Los Angeles (the capitol of ???) & then into standard VOR programming including "burning point".

General Radio Discussion / GLP= Gullible Listening People
« on: September 01, 2013, 1628 UTC »
I sometimes hang out on the Twente sdr while I'm at work & chat w/ whoever is there. Lately it has been over run with 4 chan & GLP  people who think they are gleaning some sort of info from eams on 8992 & 11175. Last week I posted,as a joke, that the last eam translated into "hey guys we're ordering a pizza, are you in?". Two days later, curiosity getting the best of me, I looked at the glp site to see what these loonies were discussing about EAMS & some sort of imminent attack in Syria & I found my pizza joke being stated as fact! I'm ...it..I just...I'm speechless.

Clandestine Stations / Voice of Tibet
« on: August 21, 2013, 1503 UTC »
A very cool radio war (or maybe just a police action) going on with this station & the Chinese jammer.

Heard via Twente at 13:10 on 15563 with a CNR 1 jammer on 15560.
30 minutes later I find Voice of Tibet on 15568 & the CNR 1 jammer is on 15565.
At 13:50z Voice of Tibet is now on 2 frequencies 15563 & 15568. The Chinese jammer is temporarily off & it returns a few minutes later but now its on 15540 (??). Also find a sort of noise jammer on 15550 that I have always associated with China.

At 14:00 they are both gone.

This situation needs some more monitoring. I have noted the situation before but have never really stayed on top of it & nailed down who is where at what time.

Is anybody familiar with this:

I am starting to get the itch to spend some money on radio stuff. I'll probably just get a Wellbrook. Maybe a Wellbrook & a perseus.

Spy Numbers / New Star Broadcast 13750 13:18 utc 8/20/13
« on: August 20, 2013, 1327 UTC »
Tuned via remote receiver in Hong Kong. I saw a tip from Jonathan short in China on DXLDyg about this & remembered that I used to hear it most mornings on my DX 398 back in 1999/2000 during the winter. reception via Hong Kong was fair at best & seemed to be gone at 13:28z.

Shortwave Broadcast / Voice of Greece weirdness continues
« on: August 15, 2013, 1427 UTC »
Last night , UT Thursday, checking from 3:00 - 5:00 UTC I noted a complete absence of VOG on all of its usual frequencies. Those are 7475  9420  9935  11645  15630  15650. None were active. This morning checking via Twente while I was at work I found VOG on 9420 but not anywhere else. Perhaps the end is near for the occupying former ERT staffers. The Greek government started moving to retake & shut down all of their transmitters on August 9'th & 10'th

Shortwave Broadcast / LRA36 15476 19:14 UTC 8/13/13
« on: August 13, 2013, 1923 UTC »
Checking via Twente at 19:15z they sound the best & strongest that I've ever heard them today. LRA36 is as strong and actually stronger at times than neighboring BBC Arabic service is. BBC QRM is usually the biggest impediment to hearing them. I hear rock & roll music & an OM announcer in Spanish. I'll try for them when I get home if I'm not too late.

I returned to work today so I have to get up before 5:00 in the evening & go to bed before 9 or 10 AM now. This is one of the few times I have checked for them in a while

I saw logs of this in dxld & am hearing it well now. British accented VOLMET naming locations in UK, Africa & middle east.

With each subsequent ID the number seems to change  22:20 was "this is military one time lot 3 information broadcast"
22:24 was "this is military one time lot 4 information broadcast"
22:25 was "this is military one time lot 5 information broadcast"
22:30 was "this is military one time lot 1 information broadcast"
22:34 was "this is military one time lot 1 information broadcast"
22:37 was "this is military one time lot 2 information broadcast"

Lot 1 seems to be UK sites
Lot 2 seems to be UK sites ( not sure about this one)
Lot 3 seems to be Mediterranean & African sites ( Gibraltar , Corfu, Dakar)
Lot 4 seems to be Mid east sites ( Baghdad  Kandahar)
Lot 5 seems to be mid east sites

obviously RAF VOLMET but the TX location is not clear. Possibly Creech AFB in Nevada or other western US base. or maybe Ascension.

at 00:50 this station is absolutely inbooming. The word "Lot" is most likely "Slot" so I guess the station would be called
"Military one....Time slot (1 thru 5)... information broadcast"

Tuned in when I got home & found RTN really booming in with Beatles tunes & a shout out to me at 5:03z. lots of thunder crashes (I haven't seen blue sky in days)  but RTN was on top of it with an S9+10 signal. great tunes

Thanks for the show RTN. I love the late night pirate thing

RTN still on at 9:00z but with deep fades now during "Urgent".  Up to S8 during peaks though.

I added two new frequencies to my standard good reception memories on my PL380.

15720  Radio New Zealand International       Always comes in well during North American nights.
15365  BBC world service   This is via Oman. Usually not heard real well but was good tonight. It is jammed by China but the jamming is not heard in North America. I had originally logged this as 15370 as I tuned it as I went down from 15720 RNZI & it sounded fairly good there & I entered it into a memory on the radio as 15370. I just realized tonight that I had the wrong frequency & 15365 is obviously much better sounding.

Also I noticed tonight that Radio Australia on 15515 is in French 2 days a week from 3:00 - 3:15.It goes into English at 3:15 until 6:00. This is confusing as they don't always seem to do French on Saturday & Sunday (I get mixed up by skeds that use a 1-7 method of indicating what days a language service/station is on, does 1= Sunday? I can't seem to keep it straight).

North American Shortwave Pirate / PPVR 6925usb 4:33 UTC 8/1/13
« on: August 01, 2013, 0814 UTC »
on at 4:33 utc with "five minute mysteries"from mid 1940's.followed by PPVR ID & music. I'm starting to dig this station. It has been coming in very well  here lately. Tonight  though after a well heard start reception sort of sputtered out by 4:45.

aaand came back at 6:03 utc with ID and "Heat of the moment" just  before the battery in the laptop I was running my SDR on expired at 6:07utc. Oh,well I like Eric Cartman & the senate's version better anyway.
Thanks for the show(s)  PPVR
