North American Shortwave Pirate / PPVR 6925usb 4:33 UTC 8/1/13
« on: August 01, 2013, 0814 UTC »
on at 4:33 utc with "five minute mysteries"from mid 1940's.followed by PPVR ID & music. I'm starting to dig this station. It has been coming in very well  here lately. Tonight  though after a well heard start reception sort of sputtered out by 4:45.

aaand came back at 6:03 utc with ID and "Heat of the moment" just  before the battery in the laptop I was running my SDR on expired at 6:07utc. Oh,well I like Eric Cartman & the senate's version better anyway.
Thanks for the show(s)  PPVR

First noted around 3:47with usual S9+20 signal with Travelin' Wilburys (I think). Great show tonight
4:34  "the SDR's are running but the humans are asleep..."  losing the signal by this time but still audible here.
good Luck in  that "wretched hive of scum and villainy" John.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Dog walk log 3:00 UTC 23 July 1013
« on: July 31, 2013, 0301 UTC »
Howdy Tim, i have several portables that I bought expressly for my DX dog walking. This log was done with a Sangean ATS 909x. I really love this radio. I also sometimes use a Tecsun PL380 or a Tecsun PL360 but they don't come close to the ATS909x. I had been walking China in the mornings but found the DX to be better at 10:00pm local time (3:00 utc). In addition to these stations Voice of Vietnam is on 6175 at 3:30 utc via one of those US religion stations.

If I find other interesting things on the bands I will do another DX dog posting.

4:00 utc:  Having just returned from a DX walk, I feel compelled to mention that the Tecsun PL380 is actually much better than I remember. When I first got it about 6 months ago i used it for a week or so as my only dog walk radio & didn't really care for it that much. I used it again tonight  & I now feel differently. I also should mention that what I DON'T know about radios & how they work could fill volumes. Having admitted that (it's always been my shameful secret. That & the fact that I can't copy CW), I was pleasantly surprised at how well this baby performed. My complaints are that the keys act funny, you have to press them really hard to get the desired result & it doesnt have up & down "slew" buttons. Also it doesn't have SSB. The bandwidth capabilities are pretty cool though. You can narrow it down to 1 khz & open it up to 6 khz. I love the DSP thing too. I am not at all sure how this works but as you tune slowly it sounds like a BFO in that you can hear a slight het as you approach an active frequency. It seems to act like a synchronous detector in this respect. It picked up all of my regular stations as well & usually better than the ATS909x. I was able to get "armchair copy" from Radio Romania & Voice of Turkey. Iran came in much better than normal too. One thing I love is that I can hold the radio easily in one hand. This is real important to me since I have my other hand full of a barely controlled dog. I actually was able to lay the extended antenna against the radio & put the whole thing in my pocket. With the ATS I have to hold the antenna in a sloping position for the best reception & it is way to big to even consider putting it in my pocket. The light can be kept on by holding the button on for a few seconds. That is very handy for me as I am walking in the dark & try to avoid the street lights. When I did walk right under  light there was very little signal degradation on the PL380.   All in all a nice little portable for about $50.00.

PPVR moved to 6930usb at about 2:03z & then moved back to 6925usb at 2:11

It's really noisy from the storms that passed through earlier but Rave on is coming through fairly well. I'm listening on my sat750. It sounds like 2 different stations. I thought I heard a PPVR ID at 2:02

  2;05z  PPVR now on 6930usb

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: ERT in English 9420 khz 13:00 utc

I don't think this could be in any way considered a pirate. It is maybe a clandestine station but not a pirate.

Shortwave Broadcast / ERT in English 9420 khz 13:00 utc
« on: July 29, 2013, 2243 UTC »
I haven't actually heard this myself but I have seen it reported on a daily basis. The former Voice of Greece is still being sort of occupied by the fired ERT staffers. They also seem to be doing a little bit of Spanish & Chinese at different times. The English news is reported on 9420 , 9935 & 15630 at 13:06 - -13:16 utc & It ID's a Free Hellenic Radio.

SDR catch with lots 'o'fades signal was about S6 at the end.

Exceptionally noisy here tonight as we are about to get rained on. MMR is about S4 amidst the rude static crashes.
Listening on Grundig Sat750 with built in whip as externals are disconnected.

701
S/on at 2:49 w/ Gerry Raferty "Baker Street" w/ nice AM signal storm noise abounds tonight but RML sounds very good.

702
I could detect the carrier on my portable while on a canine stroll at 4:00z last night. Also noted on SDR recording. It sort of looks like a modulated digital mode at the beginning but it is too weak to tell what exactly is going on. Into music by 4:00z. It is too far down in the noise to actually ID anything.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Poll: Favorite albums
« on: July 28, 2013, 2342 UTC »
It's very hard to narrow it down. The list would change from time to time

In no particular order:

Rolling Stones  Exile on Main st.
The Wailers  Catch a fire
Elvis Presley   The Sun singles
Robert Johnson  King of the delta blues singers
Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers   LAMF

I just realized that the most recent album on my list is almost 40 years old. I am 48 years old. I wonder what the hell that means???
