Equipment / Re: Outdoor vs. Attic Antennas
« on: July 09, 2014, 2127 UTC »
What you're doing when you use metal plates or tape on two sides of a window is making a simple capacitor.  It should work fine for SWL'ing.  I'm sure aluminum foil would work OK too, but would be hard to attach the coax or lead-in wire to.

On another thread here I mentioned using an LCD TV as a computer monitor using the VGA input.  It's been working great so far and I haven't noticed any EMI coming from it.  One project for the near future is to put up a TV antenna so I'll be able to watch TV in the shack.

I read online where Amelia Earhart didn't even have a CW-capable radio with her, since she wanted to reduce weight and neither she or Fred Noonan were proficient in CW.  It possibly could have saved her life.

I can't quite make out the voice, but the CW is as follows:

What that article didn't mention was the high failure rate of plasma TV's.  I think I read somewhere that the average life of one was about 2 years.

Yes, this station used to be Radio Fax in the early 1990's.  I used to listen to it all the time when I was in England, and IIRC they used to broadcast 24/7.  They then shut down and later started having the Reflections Europe show on weekends.

12035   <1314-1329>      6/10/14   TUE

13 hours on a Tuesday morning?  What the heck is the expected audience?

It could just be the "God wants me to broadcast to as many people as possible in order to save their souls" way of thinking.  That could also explain the "shotgun" type of frequency choice all over the HF bands.

I've never heard this station before, so now I'm intrigued.  I'll have to keep listening for it.  The hard part will be picking out YHWH from the dozens of other religious broadcasters all over the SW bands.

BTW, that is some creepy music, reminds me of 80's horror movies.

Did they say who put the bomp in the bomp be bomp be bomp, or will it forever be a mystery?

Huh? / Re: Arizona senator hosting ‘chemtrail’ forum
« on: June 25, 2014, 2200 UTC »
What's next, public forums on Illuminati mind control, government involvement in 9/11, and UFO's in Area 51?

If anyone hopes these people will learn that "chemtrails" are actually just frozen water vapor, they don't understand conspiracy theorists at all.  Anybody claiming there's nothing sinister about jet exhaust will be labeled a "disinformation agent" and will be considered part of the coverup.

I'm glad I don't have any bluetooth devices in my car.  My cell phone has bluetooth capability but I didn't turn it on.  I don't want to look like one of those dweebs who walk around everywhere with that stupid bluetooth device in their ear.

57
Of course you need tweezers and a magnifying glass to change frequency.

Absolutely awesome signal here in SE Kansas, armchair copy with just a little bit of static from nearby storms tonight.

Equipment / Re: Gear required to take the step

If you do go the portable route, make sure you get one which covers the entire 3-30 MHZ HF spectrum.  I think there are some out there which leave out big chunks.  And a digital frequency readout is a must.

Nothing wrong with getting started that way.  I started with a Sony ICF7600 back in 1990, then graduated to a Sony 2010 which I still have and use while DXing away from home.
