General Radio Discussion / Re: The future of 'Zombie' RadioShack

I think after people got fed up enough with them asking their address, they stopped doing that and then just started asking for zip codes.

I haven't been in a Radio Shack in years.  If I need electronic components I either scavenge them from old PC boards or get them from All Electronics or Mouser.

One thing that turned me off years ago was the insistence on giving your address even if you were buying a $5 with cash.  That, and the fact they were more interested in selling cell phones rather than other electronics.

I guess if I were desperate for a particular part I might visit one again, but otherwise I can't think of any reason to darken their doorstep.

Coming in good here in SE KS, first time I've ever heard this station.

After Molly Hatchet op came on and his audio sounded a bit scratchy, then at 0023 he started the next song and the audio dropped way out... sounds like either audio problem or tx problem.  Coming back up at 0026.

Spy Numbers / Re: Interesting number station msg
« on: December 02, 2013, 1856 UTC »
M12 ends with 000 000 which this one apparently didn't, unless they forgot to send that, but most of the ex-KGB stations never sent AR SK as far as I know.

It could possibly be dummy traffic, but even most dummy traffic consists of totally random groups.  I wouldn't think this would be a dummy message unless they intend for the other agencies to waste their time focusing on the 62, 63, 72, and 73's.

I really wish I'd have caught the beginning of the message.

Spy Numbers / Interesting number station msg

Was going back through old traffic recently when I came across a numbers transmission I remembered copying because the message groups don't appear to be random.  The message was from a CW station heard on 9458.5 back on 17 April 1996 at 0520 UTC:

>041796
>0520Z
>9458.5KHZ
>CW

73267 63270 63175 63076 19191 BT AR SK
>EOT

As you can see all groups start with 62, 63, 72, 73, or 44, with a 19191 stutter group at the end.  What it seems like is that it was a message which was sent out without first encoding it with a one time pad.  There's no way these groups are random.  If there were ever a number station message decoded by hobbyists, it would be this one.

I don't even know for sure which station (ENIGMA designator) which sent this message, and I've never copied anything like it since.

This looks a lot like the suspected US military SIGINT intercept training traffic I used to copy all the time back in the mid to late 90's.  The frequencies in use back then were 10225 and 16303.6 running parallel.  There were all sorts of different types of message formats sent, some obviously fake plaintext, but lots of coded message group traffic.  Modes used were CW, Sitor-B (FEC), RTTY in various different speeds but always 170 Hz shift, and even ASCII mode.

According to my logs I first logged it in 1996 and last logged it in 2007.  I've also on occasion found other activity on other frequencies which may have been related to SIGINT operator training.

Weak, somewhat readable here in SE Kansas, lots of pesky peskies underneath.

Here's some songs I'd like to hear:

Low Rider - War
Little Wing  - Jimi Hendrix
Crossroads - Cream

Good levels here in SE Kansas, have it streaming on my live feed (http://n2uhc.listen2myradio.com) right now.

Anything by Pink Floyd sounds good to me.

Anyone got a licence on that frequency?

Someone Bethsoft could outsource to?

That's in the middle of an aeronautical band.  It's highly unlikely the FCC would grant them a license to use 3450.  The FCC doesn't just grant licenses to use random HF frequencies anyway, but they definitely wouldn't allow a game maker a license in the aero band.

Weak here in SE Kansas, can hear DTMF tones and EAS tones.  Can hear a male voice speaking but hard to make out any words.

If memory serves, wasn't it CW McCall's birthday recently? Perhaps this is why this station is up

I think he was born during the dark of the moon on the 6th of June in a Kenworth pulling logs...
