More QSB but still in there. It's Northern Relay Service with "Beds are burning".

Brutal signal here, Shortwave Broadcast quality. Posted here before I listened for an ID.

General Radio Discussion / Re: The Penguin threat still exists!!!
« on: February 29, 2012, 1527 UTC »
Fordyce said there are several reasons why the giant penguins might have become extinct: It could have been from climate change, the arrival of new predators, or increased competition for food from seals and other creatures.

Perhaps an insecure prehistoric rabbit just made his life unbearable?

Noisy band but signal around S-5 with lots of QRn and QSB. Terrific to hear an old friend!

Just popped out of the noise into a good signal. There was an ID that I missed, then a commercial for a Wah-Wah pedal.
S-3 over S-1 noise, nice audio for SSB. 0335UTC
***Update - gone by the time I returned from posting this.

My first pirate EVER was Laryngitis. I still cherish the QSL I received, and  I even had a computer game they put out for C-64. They were a funny, brilliant, class act that put a lot of thought and effort into their programs.  R.I.P.

Speaking of kinky Borg sex, I could have assimilated the hell out of 7 of 9.
But seriously, I don't trust anonymous. Nor should I. They operate without fear of reprisal, or more importantly, accountability. It's easy for them to say we have nothing to fear from them. For now. As a member of the establishment (unwillingly, but a member non the less) who's to say they won't target me, or you, or anyone else they may disagree with.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Somebody loud and strong on 6940AM
« on: February 24, 2012, 0318 UTC »
Just turned rig on, heard instrumental (drum?) music and OM announcer "This is Radio ___".
Audio tone too low, I couldn't copy it. Signal is STRONG S-5. I'll update...

Terrific S-3 over S-0 noise signal into northern Canada! I wanted to be the first to post but I waited too long. Listened to funeral dirge when I first tuned in at 0048GMT. Then OM ID and into a tune at 0052. My first time to hear! PSE QSL!

Equipment / Re: What Radio Did you start your listening hobby with?
« on: February 12, 2012, 2036 UTC »
My first radio (portable) was a Motorola transistor radio. 1972. Heard a pile of foreign DX with it even though I never had any idea of what freq it was tuned to. I then got a Hammarlund HQ-110A. Warm, wide audio. After that I drifted away from the hobby for a long time. Got back into it with a Kenwood R-1000 in the early '80's when I was a pirate, then got out of it again. Back into it with a vengeance in the very late '90's. Various high end receivers; ITT/McKay 3021A (fan-freakin' tastic rig!) , JRC NRD 525, and an actual TON of tube sets: RCA AR-88's at 110 pounds each, (best audio EVER!) Hammarlund HQ-170, Hallicrafters SX-111, SX-24, S-20R etc and etc. Mostly I just listen on my Kenwood TS-480SAT ham set now but it doesn't have the charm. I have a Flex 1500 waiting to be loaded but have not tried it yet.

I have it in and out in north Canada, but loudest on about 6.923.6. The voice is tough to copy due to weak signal and SSB not being the easiest mode... Strength varies from S-3 on peaks with good copy to S-0 and no copy, then back up again. Great to hear you, not a common catch here!

North American Shortwave Pirate / Re: 6925U Wolverine Radio 0200Z

I tuned in to hear the Hank Williams then Johnny Cash tunes. Typical outstanding Wolverine wide SSB audio. Solid S-5 with no QSB. Great to hear you in noth Canada again!
