10/11 meters / data bursts on 11 meters
« on: December 15, 2013, 1509 UTC »
What are these data bursts I keep seeing on 11 meters?  I see them on other bands sometimes, but they seem to be almost constant on 11.  They're almost 10kHz wide, looking sort of like DRM, but they usually only last for about a second.  Once in a while one will go for 2 or 3 seconds.

Homemade QFH antenna, RTL dongle, SDR#, WXtoIMG.

Seems like every time I'm receiving NOAA-15 lately, about halfway through the pass the visible sensor will change gain (or something), going from a normal image to either almost all black or almost all white.  The infrared image is unaffected, and NOAA-18 and NOAA-19 don't behave like this.  I assumed that something was broken on the satellite, but the POES status page doesn't say anything about it.  What's going on?

General Radio Discussion / Re: SSTV freqs?

Thanks, I've been neglecting the high bands because the sunspot number has been so low.  The only reason I've been checking 27700 lately is because I keep seeing it mentioned here.

Anything on the low bands that are workable every day, 40m/80m/160m?

General Radio Discussion / SSTV freqs?

Other than 14230 and 27700, are there any other bands that still have analog SSTV on a regular basis?  I've checked the calling frequencies that are listed in the file that you can find all over the place by googling "sstv nets", but I rarely if ever hear anything, other than digital on 7173 and I'm not really interested in digital.

Gone now for me.

I'm not sure what a 12-tone modem sounds like, but I have something on 6947-ish USB that sounds sort of like rtty but not quite.

52
The band must be weird tonight, all I can get in Pennsylvania is the carrier!

0431: How Soon Is Now

S8 in Pennsylvania.

54
Off, followed by thanks from someone who sounded like Dick Weed.

55
Only about S5 in Pennsylvania, kind of hard to understand over my high noise floor.  Currently, "Sweet Transvestite".

56
Off at 1413Z.

57
S5 signal in central PA, frequency measured with HDSDR ECSS mode

Playing what sounds like 60s pop tunes, maybe British, none of which I recognize.

58
Just listening to it now on my SDR recording.  Amazing signal -- 20 over S9 and 4kHz wide!

59
No, whatever is going on with me is probably local, because I see it all the time, a distinctive-shaped hump of noise on the waterfall.  It goes away sometimes, but it's always the same shape in the same place.  Noise IS up across the band for me tonight, and earlier in the evening 6925USB was jammed by LSB fishermen, but the particular noise I've got is something different.

Thanks for the shout out, always nice to have broadcasters that interact with their audience!

Clarity coming up a little now, Iron Maiden's Ancient Mariner, cool!

You're actually about S7 for me, but so is the noise, I wish I knew where it was coming from.
