VHF/UHF Logs, including satellites and radiosondes / 34.150 MHz [150.0 Hz Tone Squelch] Open FM Carrier 16 Feb 2023

Yesterday afternoon I did some VHF low scanning, California Highway Patrol was booming in, among many other users.  Also heard a fair amount of above 30 MHz Latin American traffic (mostly taxi cabs).   Fort Hood, Texas Range Control on 30.450 MHz FM [150.0 Hz tone squelch] was also full scale.  SNOTEL data on 40.670 MHz FM [CSQ] and the BNSF rail data link system was going nuts on 44.580 MHz FM [CSQ]

34.1500 MHz FM [150 Hz] Had a strong FM signal on it, with that little 150Hz hum in the background, but no audio that I could make out.  Signal was there for well over an hour (this is around 2:00 in the afternoon US Eastern time, in downtown Richmond VA).   I did manage to get a few video clips of it, along with some of the other activity. 

In the past I've heard somebody left the radio on transmit mode before - usually on the 30.000 MHz frequency, but 34.15 FM is a new one for me.  I will do some digging and see if that's a known range control, etc. frequency at a US military base.

Lots and lots of activity on the band in general today.  It does seem like when the band is really open like this...the music carriers start appearing.

The FCC DB is a good place to start.  Also check out the current 2023 VHF low band skip logs thread on RadioReference.  There is a lot of confirmed information there (including things like callsigns, PL tone/CTCSS tones or DPL codes/DCS codes in use) for the 33 MHz fire dispatch band and the 30-50 MHz band in general.

Hope this helps.  There is a lot of exciting DX coming in on the 25-30 MHz band and the 30-50 MHz band right now with the cycle heating up like it is.

Note that the receiver in question (RadioShack Pro-651, also known as the Pro-106, GRE PSR-500 and Whistler WS1040) decodes the PL tone (CTCSS tone, tone squelch) as 151.4 Hz.  They are using 150.0 Hz, but 150.0Hz is not a civilian tone so its not included in any of these types of radios...and 151.4Hz is the closest to 150 Hz. 

This is the best I've heard Fort Hood Range Control in a while.

32.1800 MHz FM is very active today.  Costa Rican taxi cab company using CTCSS (PL) tones 77.0 Hz and 141.3 Hz both active on 32.180 MHz 32180 kHz FM.

Received in Richmond, VA using handheld scanner receivers and a simple telescopic whip antenna.

Heard via handheld receivers (scanners) using a telescopic CB HT antenna.  From 1400 UTC to 1430 UTC or so. 

31.100 MHz FM [CSQ] - Carrier squelch.

Checked the other "usual suspects" and there seemed to be something there - but 31.100 MHz was by far the loudest and clearest.  I was able to close the squelch and they sounded like local two-way land mobile at points.

Radios sold out of China, but used worldwide.  480 channels, FM voice, regular simplex.  Carrier squelch CSQ.  No tone.  No CTCSS tone no PL tone no DCS / DPL.  DTMF/ANI and FSK based selective calling. 

27.5-39.5 MHz according to Chinese law.  Technically the last channel is 39.475 MHz. Radios display channel number only.   

Channel 001 is 27.5000 MHz FM [CSQ]

Channel 480 is 39.4750 MHz FM [CSQ]

There are apparently variants on the market with switchable 12.5 kHz channel spacing instead of 25 kHz.  They’re advertised as 1000 channel radios, same 27.500 MHz to 39.500 MHz coverage…not sure how many of these are used in the 12.5 kHz mode.

Numerous other services, including an AM mode fishery radio service in Japan in the 35-40 MHz region. 

Others include the “DSB Fishery Radio” WSR-358 and WSR-388, along with Marine DSB Radiotelephone Radios, Marine CB Radios, etc.

27805 FM 27.805 MHz FM - this seems to be a new one.

German stations heard running FM on 27.295 MHz FM CB Channel 29 FM.  I know US truckers have adopted this frequency for FM use, along with 26.845 MHz FM and 27.745 MHz FM.  Of course, Channel 30 FM and Channel 31 FM are also popular.

26.900 MHz and 26.950 MHz have both been home to lots and lots of paging activity recently.  26.905 MHz FM though, that might be a better call.  Same with some other frequencies in the 26.805 MHz to 26.895 MHz ballpark.  When the band isn't open to Europe, 26.900 MHz FM would absolutely work though.
