Utility / Re: Phone patches
« on: February 05, 2019, 1805 UTC »
The last one I head was a guy on an oil rig in that time period talking to his girlfriend on and off for roughly a three week period. Problem was his wife was listening in, too. Darn those cheap sw portables!

That was about the same time period you're talking about. They were in the 6280-6290 range.

They seem to still be active in Latin America, I've heard them in the 6600-6900 kHz range and other places, mixed in with freebanders/outbanders.  6790 kHz and other 67xx frequencies seem to the most popular.  I've heard several QSOs (in Spanish) that sounded like a husband talking to his wife about domestic matters, have even heard the children talking to the husband in the same QSO.  Hard to say if they're "true" phone patches or jury-rigged deals (somebody holding the mic up to a landline telephone somewhere, etc).

I have the carrier on 6925.09 or 6925.1 kHz and bits and pieces of audio in AM (and USB/LSB modes) on the COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR at 1830 UTC

9031 USB has been logged by myself even, last heard FRESHMAN working BOAT DOCK on 9031 kHz

According to the MT mil-gov frequency list:

Strategic Communications Wing 1 SCW-1 Frequency Channel Matrix HF-SSB

6691 kHz USB - CA - Charlie Alpha
11187 kHz USB - CB - Charlie Bravo
17892 kHz USB - CC - Charlie Charlie

Unknown designators:
11267 kHz USB, 13240 kHz USB, 14615 kHz USB

Apparently CD, CE, CF, CG, CK and CL have been referenced on-air, but their frequencies have not been confirmed.

I got sucked into the dipole white paper.  Great mix of theory and practical examples (both historical and modern), as str. mentioned.  I like how they didn't just stick to broadcasting but dive into land mobile radio and other uses in the discussion.

Very nice find indeed.

VHF/UHF Logs, including satellites and radiosondes / Re: UHF mil air
« on: January 31, 2019, 1312 UTC »
As you might have gathered I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to the TACAMO/NEACP UHF systems and UHF mil air in general - I understand the UHF multiplexing concept and GEPs - some cursory Googling indicates that the system is eventually going to be upgraded to 100% digital encrypted IP-based using the same frequencies, is this not correct?  (something about "Project 411" or "Project 441"?)   Maybe I'm confusing the UHF air-to-ground system with the various military SATCOM upgrades.

Knowing the military they will retain backward-compatibility re: analog and connectivity to the HF-SSB networks.

Received via COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR.  Band is open to Latin America for sure.  OM laughing and carrying on, heavy QRM from carrier/data on 6762 kHz.  Another poor frequency choice due to the USAF using 6761 USB.

aye la banda de 45 metros, cambio!

6666.6 kHz 6.6666 MHz 6.666 USB etc etc - I'm hearing two or three stations talking over each other on 6666.6 USB right now on the COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR.  Spanish language, lots of whistling into mics and general CB-like behavior.

6570 kHz USB 6.570 MHz USB, Spanish speaking freebanders, specifically talking about happenings in the 'hood.  Lots of whistling into mics, etc.  Received via COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR

6520 kHz AM, can hear bits and pieces of audio on the frequency...but the North Korean jamming of this radio station is very effective.  Receiver is the COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR on the CT/MA border.

6.520 MHz AM mode, heavily jammed by North Korea shortwave broadcast station Voice Of The People

Hearing a couple different QSOs in the 6200-6525 kHz marine range.  Receiver is the COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR on the CT/MA border

6205 kHz AM - weak music heard, AM carrier, presumed Laser Hot Hits European pirate - 49 meter band
6215 kHz USB - weak SSB voice heard, this is the 6 MHz calling distress frequency (frequently used by South American fishing fleets)
6230 kHz USB - marine weather
6233 kHz USB - two OMs chatting in Spanish, presumed pescadores (good signals)
6238 kHz USB - Portuguese language, weak, presumed pescadores or fishing boats
6246 kHz USB - mention of Venezuela (Spanish langauge)
6292 kHz USB - Spanish language chatter, heavy fading
6300 kHz USB - UNID language, frequently logged activity on this frequency
6303 kHz USB - UNID language, weak signals (previously logged)
6363 kHz USB - Spanish language, presumed pescadores
6400 kHz USB - UNID language, mixing with Pyongyang North Korean SWBC signal on 6400 AM
6445 kHz LSB - Spanish language, OM and YL talking - some fading
6501 kHz USB - US Coast Guard marine weather forecast S9+30db on peaks (some overmodulation, very strong)

This is a five minute "drive by" picture of the band

via the COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR On the CT/MA border, tuned in at 2139 UTC.

Frequency / QRG :   6400 kHz 6.400 MHz 6.4 MHz

Use by Pyongyang Broadcasting Station North Korea DPRK in AM mode (6400 kHz AM), however I am hearing fishing fleet comms, I believe in Portuguese (maybe not?) on 6400 USB mode.  Weak carrier on 6400 kHz presumed to be Pyongyang while the pescadores chat away on 6400 USB.

Equipment / Re: LoG Antenna Update
« on: January 30, 2019, 1918 UTC »
Would the 50 foot LoG perform decently in the 20-30 MHz range (including 10 and 11 meters?) or by "higher bands" do you mean 10-15 MHz that range?

I know you have a 11/10 meter dipole but I still think you should get a vertical for 11 meters :D   Also yes to the 1000 foot LoG.

5410 kHz USB is used as an inter-state coordination frequency for emergency management/disaster response purposes in the USA, shared with NATO I would imagine.  It's used for regional communication within the USA as far as the SECURE network goes.

Peskies / 6920 kHz USB vs. 6925 kHz LSB 2205 UTC 29 Jan 2019
« on: January 29, 2019, 2209 UTC »
Strong pescadore traffic on 6925 kHz LSB mixing in with an on-going QSO on 6920 kHz USB. Combine that with Mix Radio International on 6925 kHz (AM mode) and it’s pretty messy.
