HF Beacons / Re: .-. .-.--------- 4098 LSB, 4094 USB 0116 UTC 3 Dec 13
« on: December 03, 2013, 1453 UTC »
The beacon you are describing is on a center frequency of 4096.55 kHz at this time.  It is sending the letters "RR" in CW followed by a long dash, the dash is slightly longer than each of the letter R's.  The cycle repeats every 5.8 seconds, and the long dash is ~ 795 msec long (0.795 seconds).  The signal is quite good at my location, will have to wait until later today to see if I have it in the daylight.

This signal was not present the first part of this past weekend, I did tune this specific range of freqs several times and it was not present then.  I do not think I looked in this range Sunday though.  Note that this is the same frequency as the "M" beacon I reported back on 24 November, it also appears to have similar signal characteristics.  That beacon only stayed on the air a couple of days, we will have to see if this one hangs around a bit longer.

(edit)  A couple of hours after I posted this the signal went off the air, shut off, did not fade out.

Yeah, it was Black Cat Radio.  Did the SSTV, CW following it that said "Black Cat Radio", and part of one more song, maybe a theme song, then off air.  Signal was fair into the Mojave Desert.  Ignore the time tag on the image, the image started at 0147 on the money, but the time tag is form later, when I played the recording back.

Listening on a remote this is US mil.  Sounds like a a US Navy AAW (Anti Air Warfare) net.  They have engaged (in a simulated way) several taergets, splashed at least 2 and escorting one.

I have only been monitoring casually lately.  I periodically tune to one of the Asian numbers stations, just to see if they are still chugging along.  Last month, early October, 2013, I noticed I was not hearing much from V24 or M94.  My assumption was that the schedule I built up at the beginning of the year was just not accurate anymore, and a new schedule was needed.  So I started to monitor closely, and build up a new schedule to publish.

What  I found is that V24 has almost ceased operation, and no M94 transmissions have been sent, that I am aware of, in over 6 weeks.

Examples of activity levels.  In May of 2013 I heard 62 V24 transmissions, and 4 M94 transmissions.  In the last 6 weeks, the second half of October combined with all of November, I have heard eight V24 transmissions and no M94 transmissions at all, in the past I would have expected there to be on the order of 90 V24 transmissions and 6 or more M94’s.  In that 6+ weeks (part of Oct and all of Nov) monitored every known V24 and M94 frequency, past and present, 24 hours a day.  I also looked for new frequencies, and so far found no indication of any in use.

It appears that V24 / M94 has either greatly reduced operations or it has moved a large part of its operations to frequencies / times I have not been able to locate.

V24 and M94 receptions, 16 October to 29 November, 2013.

WDDR, still doing well  into the Mojave Desert.  Down an S unit or two but still nice.  Excellent audio.

Your choices in music are fine, but do you have a little Copperhead Road by Steve Earle in that selection?

T!

(edit) Chinese OTHR came up and started killing the band about 0244 UTC.

SSTV in the end.  So WDDR is Wolverine, or Wolverine was doing a relay, either way, great show.

This is not a pirate, but rather it is station WBCQ, out of Monticello ME.  100% legal operation.  Also, it is USB plus carrier, or AM suppressed LSB.

S8 to S9 in the Mojave Desert, in California.  Very nice audio, about 4 kHz wide and good low end.

(edit)  Thanks for the shout out.  Also, making it into the Twente remote SDR in the Netherlands fairly well, would be maybe S4 if the s-meter was calibrated, but 100% copy.

Probably going to need a bit more than that to go on ;)

At about the time you mention there was a wide OTHR hitting, about once a minute for 20 or 30 seconds.  A little later there was another radar, a Chinese OTHR, hitting the same frequency.

HAARP is still shut down by the way.  Although I understand a contract has been hammered out.

Excellent find, Token!  It's always exciting to hear something new. Your detailed reports are valuable to the rest of us - we all have something new to look for now.

I had been wondering about all of those 4 MHz beacons - there haven't been any reports for some time, and while I was able to dial in one of the 4096 beacons the other night, I was not able to hear the Wind beacon, to TMP.... I hope these guys make an appearance this winter.  'Tis the season....!

W and TMP are both there, no problem.  I kind of take these for granted, I see many of them every time I turn the radio on, day or night, so I sledom report them.  Maybe this evening I will do a sweep of the beacons I see.

OK, not a replacement for the Inyo Whooper, the Whooper was active today.  This frequency is very close to the one that “Kelsie” used to be on.  Might be a replacement for Kelsie?

So this morning Hexie, Coxie, this new one, and the Inyo Whooper are all active.
