Fairly good signal into the Mojave Desert here, for both parts of the show, RRS and Cupid.  The two Cupid SSTV images were not very clear, but you could see what they were.

Nice shout out to Dimbulb and kilokat7 by Pandora at 0235z.

Unfortuantely, the Chinese OTHRs are starting to rise out of the noise, so I will likely not hear anything more across the band tonight.

HF Beacons / Dasher 7950 kHz, 1630 UTC, Nov 30, 2012

1630 UTC, Nov 30, 2012.

Have what appears to be a dasher beacon on 7949.98 kHz.  Dashes are about 1 sec long and 15 seconds apart.  About S3 here on the peaks, but average is between S1 and S2.  Most dahses are copiable, although some fade to just in the noise.

(edit)  last pulse sent at 1657:36, less than 5 minutes after posting here.  Not saying there is any connection or anything ... ;)

0045 got enough audio to ID a Christmas song.  Almost sounded like something off the Charlie Brown Christmans album, but not sure.

Whoever this was played a lot of Jethro Tull.  Signal was maybe S2 to S3 here in the Mojave Desert, but music was copiable.

0325 "Aqualung"
0335 probable ID, but too weak to make out
0336 "Thick as a Brick"
0338 "Mother Goose"
0344 "Up to Me"
0347 probable ID and email, too weak to make out, ".....  Radio", I think it was single short word at the begining, Bea?  Sea?  Don't know

HF Beacons / Re: "L" beacon this morning 6668 KHz
« on: November 14, 2012, 0320 UTC »
I believe we might all be reporting the same beacon on this freq.  I have it reasonably strong and can watch it for extended periods of time.  I see it changing the character it is sending from time to time.  Because of the nature of the changes I suspect it is not intentional.  I have not seen something I can definitely tie to temperature, for example, but I have been trying to see trends.

Most frequently it sends the letter “L”, dit-dah-dit-dit.  Here is a spectrogram of that being sent:

The next most frequent I see is “L” with an extra little short dit at the beginning.  The short dit is clearly heard when this happens, and I occasionally catch myself thinking “was that UI or a question mark minus a dah”?  Here is a spectrogram of that happening:

Other times I hear the dah shortened up, with the short dit at the beginning, and then it sounds like “WM”.  Here is a spectrogram of that happening and followed by a dit-L, you can tell the missing portion of the dah is actually there but reduced in power, to the ear it sounds gone.

I also have heard AO out of it a few times.  The short leading dit is present and the dah partially drops out.  If you look closely the dah is actually there but appears to sometimes be low in power for a portion of it.  I sometimes hear this repeated for many cycles.  Here is a spectrogram of the AO:

As for zackers question as to where this is located.  Based on the fact I can often hear it in daylight and have it fairly strong I am betting in the northern Mojave Desert area.  As I said, I have it about the same conditions/strengths as I used to have the TR beacon, I would not be surprised if they were not from the same general area.

HF Beacons / Re: L 6668 kHz
« on: November 12, 2012, 2147 UTC »
I am hearing very occasional glitches on the first dit, but much of the time it is clean, as an "L".

I wonder, could this be a reappearance of a "fixed" version of the "TR" beacon?  I always wondered if the TR was supposed to be L but with a slightly long pause after the first dit.  The TR was last reported in the 69XX area and the L was first reported in the 69XX area.  TR used to change frequency and it is not inconsistent that it would now be on ~6668 kHz.  The L appears to be hitting me about the same as the TR used to, even in mid day, possibly slightly weaker.  And the TR does not appear to have been reported after the L made its appearance.  Not really anything much to draw them together, just a thought.

Like the TR this L beacon drifts noticeably in a few minutes.  The drift does not appear to be as large but maybe over time it would be.

Equipment / Re: Using two SDRs with two aerials for steerable array?
« on: November 03, 2012, 2231 UTC »
K1LT's application is aimed at forming a decent beam to enhance received perfomance, that is the reason he uses 8 elements in 4 pairs of end-fire arrays.  He has also added the ability to reverse direction to those elements.  So yes, it would be frequency sensitive and have a relatively narrow range for a well shaped beam (and even at that you can see, in the QEX article, grating lobes affecting his beam shapes as he gets off boresite of the array).  However, for RFDF and applying a null to QRM/QRN you do not need that complex an array (gain is not necessarily the goal, only a well formed null), and the system would be more forgiving of bandwidth.  Don't get me wrong, you might still need several sets to get frequency coverage that might be most usefull, but each would be more simple than his setup.

For RFDF and QRM/QRN nulling a broadside array might be preferable.

I like the idea, but you know, I assume, that steering a null/lobe is much easier to implement using a simple variable phase shifter and a single receiver.  The addition of the SDR brings not only steerability but also the ability to detect angle of arrival for even very short duration transmissions, such as single pulses.

Anybody thought of doing this?  I see two methods that might be interesting:

A) two identical vertical aerials[1] spaced >0.1 wavelength apart, each connected to a separate SDR.
Use software to continuously change the phase between the two SDRs, then mix it
Voila!  Electronically steerable array.  Essentially what you get here is a steerable null.

This has been discussed a few times on a few forums.

Comparing the phase of a signal received by both gives you angle of arrival, for very quick RF DF capability.  Adjusting the phase relationship between the two SDRs steers the beam.

Of course, with only two SDRs/antennas you have a bi-directional system, meaning two main lobes/nulls 180 degrees apart, and two possible directions of arrival, also 180 degrees apart.  Adding a third SDR and antenna could reduce that to a single main lobe/null.  A fourth would be better yet.

This is Numbers Station S06.  It has a schedule Monday to Friday at 0400 UTC on 15721 kHz, USB.  And it ends in the zeros, as you note.

There were actually several SSTV images from The Machine last night.  Also, the "Going to kill the Rabbit" thing was done a couple times, I am not sure if it was all from the same station or not.

The Machine SSTV's (not great images, had some noise on freq), times for each in the lower left corner:
