Hello seamus

 T - 12889.7 KHz - Was a dasher set up on a test
D/V - 12888 KHz - Dipole/Vertical antenna test- you are correct it has been discontinued.
       It may  return though... ;)
From how I understand it they were in Florida.

weaksigs  :)

Not sure why the test dasher (has been called "T", I am assuming this is the same one I gave a heads up to on the forum at about the same time as the D/V was operating) is listed at 12889.7, the actual center freq was 12888.8 and measured repeatedly on calibrated equipment.  However, several people did report it as 12889.7.  This dasher is no longer active, although it may come back in the future with more than just a dash on it.

Further details:

The builder claims the power is "about" 250 mW at the antenna, no other details on the transmitter.  Antenna is said to be a hidden inverted V running N/S with good take off to the West, and obstruction to the East.  Dit rate is now 60 dits/sec (I saw it at that rate this morning).  The location is either in the Panamint Mountains on the West side of Death Valley or in Panamint Valley itself, as the emails just say "Panamint".  The description of the antenna would suggest the West side of the Panamint range, but that is a guess.

The builder does not appear to be a poster here, but might be reading some of the threads.  After his initial email to me (a couple of months back when the ditter was on 5711.8 kHz) I mentioned this site and his last email referenced the ditter having been heard.

Death Valley.

I have been gone for a few days, but when I checked an email account I use for radio stuff this morning I had an email telling me this ditter would be on the air for a while from the Death Valley area.  This is from the same source that tried what I assume is the same ditter at 5111.8, 5711.8, and 8001.8.

The center freq for this one looks like it is 12888.8.  The email mentioned the ditter would be going to 60 dits / min in the near future and that it would also have a CW message eventually...oddly enough it will be "DV" for Death Valley.  Might be confusing as D V the antenna test beacon is right there next to it.  I have suggested to the source that "DV CA" might be better than just "DV".

Yeah, got them here also from 0155 on, Taps and Reville mostly, over and over with a minute or so between.  Martial music in general.

D is the stronger here at 1935 UTC, on multiple antennas including one that is vertical.

On my 12 MHz inverted V, D is about 8 dB higher than V.

Spy Numbers / Re: Spanish number station question
« on: October 22, 2009, 2038 UTC »
Pedro often has a hard time with the V2a, M8a, and SK01 transmitters, this is why the audio fairly often has some kind of problem.  It is not unusual to hear audio crosstalk form other, presumed, co-located stations such as Radio Habana.

The "phone ringing" has been noted for a while now.  No one I have heard from knows forr sure what is up with it and it has been seen on multiple frequencies.  Not just the Spanish numbers freqs but also several Radio Habana frequencies.

I myself am not sure there is not some kind of data on the "phone ring".  I watched it closely for a while one day and noted different numbers of pulses and even steps inside each ring pulse.  Also, some ring pulses were longer or shorter than the average.

I am not saying the phone ring pulses are intended for the same recipients as the numbers transmissions.  What I am thinking might be happening is that a data line coming to the studio is cross talking into an audio line.  It is just a possibility.

The entire range from 6800 to about 6980 has been being hit very hard for me by OTHR for the last couple of weeks.  It is really bad for me from 0000 on until about 1500.  Possibly this is what you heard?

HF Beacons / Death Valley ditter back up, 8002
« on: October 16, 2009, 0050 UTC »
Howdy all,

Got an email that the Death Valley ditter was back up, but on a different frequency.  The reported frequency is 8002 kHz.

I have yet to see it here at the house only a few air miles from DV.  But Pikes is in well at 8003.39.

Sounds somewhat like OTH Radar, but to my limited knowledge Over The Horizon Radar is more continuous.

Observed up an down the HF Spectrum; However, seems to be fond of these Cuban/Spanish numbers stations.

Very interested in ID'ing this signal. At times, it is quite prevalent.

OTHR can run the gamut from continuous to sub second burst on a specific frequency depending on the type and mission.  Along with varying frequency, different swept bandwidths,  PRFs (Pulse Repetition Frequency), PWs (Pulse Widths, and thus instantaneous bandwidth), and sweep rates are used to detect different kinds of targets and targets moving at different speeds.  It can also consist of FMCW transmissions that are not pulsed at all, but simply swept.  On a narrow bandwidth receiver, such as most people use for HF monitoring, this can sound like pulses, but with a chirp or sweep to them.

The description of a digital signal lasting for 20 seconds or more does not sound prototypical of OTHR to me unless there are dropouts of just under a second ever 3 to 7 seconds during that time period.  They typically have very long dwell times or sub 5 second dwell times.  Yes, it could be one, it is not impossible at all, but there is another answer that might be valid also and in this case is more likely.

Associated with V02a (the Spanish language numbers station the OP is probably reporting, 5883 is a known and very common freq for it) and M08 (its CW companion), is a digital signal, SK01.  This is digital data being sent in several modes, and if you use a program such as DIGTRX you can capture the data, of course, like the numbers themselves, the data is encrypted and will be gibberish, but a valid txt file.  You will likely find that the transmissions in a given time period will all be the same gibberish.  It is very common to hear SK01 alone, but it is also common to hear it after a V02a voice transmission or after a M08 transmission.  The "every five minutes after the voice has stopped" description makes me strongly suspect SK01.  If the same data burst continues after the carrier drops I would suspect a different source, but I bet this is SK01.

Edit:  Of course, less than an hour after I wrote the above I watched an OTHR hit a V02a freq for exactly 24 seconds with no drops or breaks.  I still think SK01 is the most probable player here though.
