HF Beacons / Re: pip 6550 khz 1350 UTC 07/26/2017
« on: July 26, 2017, 2107 UTC »
Do you have an approximate duration for each pip and an interval between them?  Also, this was dead on 6550 kHz?

(edit)  When I got home about 2340z I fired up the receivers and sure enough, there it was.  This is what I call the "Pips" network that shows up from time to time.  Today it was using a 0.125 sec pip every 6.0 seconds and, as normal, on multiple sequential frequencies.

They went off air a few minutes later at 0003z, 27 July, 2017.  At this time theya re still off, but they may be back, they often turn off / on multiple times in a day.

Some past loggings of the same signals, to give ideas of what other freqs to look for.

Spy Numbers / Re: M89, VC01 & V26 for June logs...
« on: July 14, 2017, 2049 UTC »

On 8.152MHz USB at 0755z I logged a Chinese man giving out numbers in either Cantonese or Mandarin, slowly and methodically, another man replies and repeats back.  Heard this one on two or three occasions now on same frequency.  The fellow that replies is always at least three to four 's' points weaker but always audible.  The session lasts between 10 and 15 minutes.

This is possibly VC03.  VC03 is obviously live, and often has different operators.  VC03 does not have any regular freqs / schedules that I know of, almost all of my receptions of these signals tend to be random and on different freqs.  I have heard multiple networks of these signals up at one time, and occasionally they seem to be duplex, while one freq is active another is quiet, and vice versa.

I suspect it is the same station, back after 0120 UTC.  About the same signal, better audio, similar music selection.  Signal is about 10 kHz wide.

So far UNIDed station 6925 AM.  S9 or so, audio is a little low but has improved during the program.  I think I saw this station tuning up before it came on with audio.

2348z  What You Won't Do For Love, Bobby Caldwell
2350z  You Needed Me, Anne Murray

Off suddenly at 0000z.  Just before leaving the air I heard some squealing in the audio, like SWR or RF in the audio issue.  Before it left the air the audio was starting to be very nice.  Good audio bandwidth.

Re: VC01.  LG, the freqs you list are 3 of the 4 used last month.  This station typically has 4 freqs it uses each month, it is most often on two of them at any given time, and changes pairs in a diurnal cycle.  All 4 frequencies for last month were 4770 kHz LSB, 5037 kHz USB, 7474 kHz USB, and 7684 kHz LSB.  It typically changes frequency sets around the 10th of each month.

So far for this month I have seen only 2 of the 4 freqs, 4588 kHz USB and 7118 kHz USB.  This weekend I will have to look for the other two.

Re: Chanters.  The Indonesian Chanters have been active a long time.  I have them in my logs going back more than 10 years.  Other freqs I have run into them are 7000 kHz LSB (and several channels / freqs below that) and 11425 kHz USB.  I seem to remember a 14 MHz freq also, but I can't find it in my logs.

Sometimes you can hear them cutting up and laughing.  I don't know what they are doing there, but they seem to enjoy it.

Re: V26.  Typically V26 is active on 3 frequencies at one time.  If you hear 9054 kHz active again you might check 4243 kHz, 4283 kHz, 7553 kHz, 7345 kHz (USB, and likely under the BC station there), 9153 kHz, and 8073 kHz.

V26 has a Morse code sister station, M95, that either follows or precedes it on a frequency.  There is also a digital mode "Chinese 4+4 modem", also on freq before or after V26/M95, that is part of this family.  I have seen the same traffic sent on all three, one after the other.

Utility / Re: Indonesian Navy P5O 3.635MHz CW
« on: July 11, 2017, 0446 UTC »
Sure, but how often do you hear military stations that ignore the ITU International Radio Prefix?  P5O belonging to NK or not, this is Indonesia.

In the past when the station has traffic some of the traffic sent has been clear text, making the source (Indonesia) and the use (Navy) clear.

I left off a frequency, 9945 kHz.  I have it on 4 freqs in my logs, 6365, 9945, 12235, and 18890 kHz.

In addition to P5O the callsigns of 7CB and 7CJ have been on the same freqs, indeed all three callsigns have been in the same message body, although most of the times I have heard traffic it was the P5O beacon until the traffic starts, and then the P5O beacon goes away and the traffic starts with the 7CB/7CJ callsigns.  Once the 7CB/7CJ traffic is done the P5O starts again.  And the 7CB and 7CJ do fall in the ITU International Radio Prefix allocation for Indonesia.  Why they use 2 calls that are "correct" and one that is not I have no idea.

Utility / Re: P5O 3.635MHz CW???
« on: July 11, 2017, 0124 UTC »
I went ahead and moved your post to the Utility forum.

This is the Indonesian Navy.  You will also find them on 12235 kHz and 18890 kHz.  When there is no traffic they send as you described, same callsign and format, but they do also sometimes send traffic.

V07 on July 09, 2017

13563 kHz USB, 09-07-2017 0700, 512 512 512 000
12163 kHz USB, 09-07-2017 0720, 512 512 512 000
12163 kHz USB, 09-07-2017 0724, 512 512 512 000

Note the unusual repeat on 12163 kHz at 0724z.  This was also at a significantly lower power level, so not sure what was going on there.  The 0720z TX was S9 or a little over, the 0724 was S7 and lower.

The voice has changed as of last week from what it has used for the last 5+ years.  It sounds fuller and the tempo has been sped up a bit.

Recording here, left channel is the null message sent on 12163 kHz USB, July 09, 2017, right channel is the null message sent on 12182 kHz USB, July 12, 2015.

And a spectrogram here, pointing out some changes to the voice.

There has also been a frequency change starting this month, deviating from the frequencies used in July since at least 2011.  It will be interesting to see if all of the freqs, for all months, have also changed.  Last month was on the old freq sets.

Old freq set here:
http://www.tokenradio.net/Radio/SharedFiles/NumbersTfer/V07_latest_sched.JPG

But so far this July they have used 13563 khz and 12163 kHz, instead of the XXX82 kHz freqs they used previously.

All that week we had been running temps of 110+ during the daytime, the high at my place was around 114 deg F.  Most nights cooled off to the high 80's or low 90's, but the night of the 25th it stayed warm all night.

Just above the noise floor here in the Mojave Desert of California.  Can hear the music, the tune, but if there were any words I would not be able to make them out.

S7 or better here in the Mojave Desert (with an S1 noise floor, so good readable signal), heard ID of "KUNT Radio" and "Captain Dave".  Signal is strong, but audio is a little thin, lacking low end and top end.  It looks like the audio bandpass is about 400 Hz to 3 .0 kHz.  The 3.0 kHz top end is not uncommon for USB (some stations are using up to 4+ kHz though) but the 350-400 Hz low end is hurting the audio.  Outside that audio is good and loud, clean, and not overdriven.

Noise and LEDs seem to be brand specific.  I tried a couple of low end LEDs and about the only thing I have seen with a wider spectrum was the sun, but I have Phillips LEDs in a few lamps here now and no noise on the radio at all from them.

I assume this is USB+carrier?  I attempted to monitor this at 0230z on June 22, however all I got was a carrier and very weak audio that might, or might not, have been numbers.  I did have to beam west to hear it, beaming towards Europe resulted in nothing at all.
