Equipment / Re: T2FD Antenna
« on: May 18, 2010, 1559 UTC »
I have 2 of the B&W folded dipoles (T2FD type).  They both work much better than standard dipoles.  Out of the dozen or so antennas here, the folded dipoles are the 'go to' antennas most of the time.

Gee whiz, the local FCC office has one on their roof for their HF intercept!  They can't be THAT bad.  I agree with the author, if every ham and SWL tried a commercially built T2FD style antenna, tuner sales would certainly drop drastically.  I don't buy into the conspiracy theory, but it is possible I suppose.

One of my folded dipoles is about 9 years old, the other about 3.  The first was installed N/S and was just such an awesome performer, I couldn't resist buying the second one when I was able to install E/W.  Not a bit sorry about either purchase.  Would certainly buy again.

It's indeed been a while

For the rest of us 99% can someone summarize what "Pirate Weather " was all about?

The Weather Radio op apparently did some work for NWS or something, as he had access to the actual weather voice program.  Broadcasts were a mix of actual weather broadcasts from all over with computer mis-pronunciations, and locally generated broadcasts with an axe to grind.  Sometimes, it was legitimate news reports (made by the weather voice him and herself), sometimes just blowing off steam. W.R. obviously holds some kind of grudge against the NWS for something.

One of the best programs I ever heard was when Weather Radio took to the airwaves reading news reports from text submitted by a packet system from hams on the ground during Hurricane Katrina.  It was the most current news reporting of the event available.  I heard stuff on W.R. that I didn't hear or see anywhere else until the 11 PM news.  Really, it was pirate radio at its best, actually serving mankind instead of just stroking the op's ego.

W.R. even took on the FRN forum years ago when some users, including me, got banned from there for questioning a couple of pirate ops.  W.R. therefore, holds a soft spot in my heart for defending the listeners and people who report reception of pirates instead of just joining the "good ol' boys club" of pirate ops and bagging on listeners.  My FRN posting privledges were eventually reinstated, and I have Weather Radio to thank.

Weather Radio, you will be missed!  (If you read this).

According to Yoder's 2010 annual, he did more than just that.  I copied Weather Radio with edited together broadcasts from NOAA stations with the computer voice mis-pronouncing things.  It was pretty funny to hear the female voice say "Tonight, a chance of fu ck"  (Trying to say 'chance of fog').  I got a kick out of the show I heard.

I just received my copy, thank you!

Wow, you really went above and beyond with this book.  It looks amazing!  And, so well done.  MAJOR kudos to you, Yoder!

General Radio Discussion / Re: I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!

Come on, guys.  Just look at how that article is written.  You don't have to be a college grad to see that this wasn't written by a journalist.  No editor would let that grammar and sentence structure slide.

More food for the paranoid thought process.  Don't be so gullible.

My order should be there by now.

Other / Someone calling CQ on CB channel 38 LSB
« on: March 13, 2010, 2056 UTC »
Was scanning and the scanner kept stopping on CB freqs.  Looks like 11m is wide open this morning.

Copied a station calling CQ over and over on 38 LSB.  Gave some shortened callsign.  Actually had a couple os QSOs with stations I could barely hear!  I did not know there was an active CW crowd on 11m.  It was pretty funny to hear them having QSOs right over the top of the SSBers all over the freq.

HF Beacons / Re: Can you hear this beacon, 10.133 MHz?
« on: March 06, 2010, 2200 UTC »
Why not create a fourm for 'legal beacon' spots?  Seems like most of the SWL's and spooks that listen for PHFers also listen for 'legal' beacons too.

I asked about the possibility for NDB's a while back. I think Beaconman's reply applies to your request too:
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,1758.msg3173.html#msg3173

Peace!

Yep, I just read that.  I certainyl see the point.  I also see beaconman's new point about life being too short.

I just love beacons, all beacons.  Bbeacons fascinate the heck out of me.  I have several on the air, and it never seems like enough.  I like listening to beacons.  I like building beacons.  I like installing beacons.  I like fixing beacons.  I like looking at beacons.  I like designing beacons.  I like talking about beacons.  I like anyone who likes beacons the way I like beacons.

So, as far as I care, any beacon is worth talking about.  I admit, pirate beacons are a little bit cooler than most others.

Copied WW in California.  Audio file sent via email to Beaconman.  SUPER weak, but was able to ID with Argo.
